Effects of laboratory versus field exercise on leukocyte subsets and cell adhesion molecule expression in children.

In adults, exercise is a powerful and natural stimulator of immune cells and adhesion molecules. Far less is known about these exercise responses during childhood and whether or not exercise in real-life activities of healthy children might influence immune responses. We compared laboratory exercise (10 x 2 min periods of heavy, constant intensity, cycle ergcometer exercise with 1 min rests between exercise in nine subjects, aged 9-15 years) with field exercise (90 min soccer practice in nine different subjects, aged 9-11 years).

Quantitative ultrasound measurements of bone speed of sound in premature infants.

Unlabelled: We measured bone speed of sound in premature infants by quantitative ultrasound. A total of 44 neonates participated in the study including 29 premature infants (median birth weight 1264 g, range 578-2420 g; median gestational age 31 weeks, range 24-36 weeks) and 15 full-term infants (median birth weight 3360 g, range 2700-3730 g; median gestational age 40 weeks, range 37-41 weeks). The left tibial speed of sound (SOS) was measured by quantitative ultrasound.

Quantitative ultrasound measurements of bone strength in obese children and adolescents.

Very few studies have examined the effect of childhood obesity on bone mineralization. The purpose of the present study was to determine bone strength by quantitative ultrasound (QUS) measurements of bone speed of sound (SOS) in obese children (n = 45; age range 6-17 yr). SOS was measured (by Sunlight Omnisense) in the mid-tibial and radial bones.

Effect of opioid peptide methionine-enkephalin in long-term cultures of human bone marrow.

Methionine enkephalin, an opioid peptide belonging to the family of neuropeptides, has been shown to function as a neurotransmitter, hormone and growth factor. The present work explored its effects in long-term culture of bone marrow cells, harvested from a patient with acute lymphoid leukemia (ALL-L3) in the second complete remission. Nine cultivation flasks were established and maintained for five weeks, with medium renewal once a week.

Relation between urinary cytology abnormalities and cyclosporine A therapy in bone marrow transplant recipients.

The aim of the study was to determine the relationship, if any, between abnormalities in urinary cytology and the administration of cyclosporine A in bone marrow transplant recipients. Specific attention was given to the presence of tubular cells with round inclusions (TCRI). Two bone marrow transplant recipient groups were studied: one with allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) (20 patients) who were treated with cyclosporine A, and the other with autologous BMT (12 patients) who did not receive cyclosporine A.

Treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia in relapse after umbilical cord blood transplantation.

Umbilical cord blood (UCB) is increasingly used as a source of hematopoietic progenitor cells for allotransplantation. Donor-derived buffy coat cells are considered optimal treatment for leukemia relapses after transplantation of allogeneic bone marrow. Experience with relapses after UCB transplants are sparse.

Anxiety as a possible predictor of acute GVHD.

In order to determine the influence of anxiety on the development of BMT complications and survival, we analysed data on 35 consecutive patients undergoing BMT in our Centre between June 1992 and December 1994. All patients received bone marrow from HLA-identical MLC non-responsive siblings. For GVHD prophylaxis, all patients received cyclosporin (CsA) and short methotrexate (MTX).

Allogeneic bone marrow transplantation for acute leukaemia--IGCI experience. International Group for Chemo-Immunotherapy.

From October 1984 to December 1994, 142 patients from six IGCI-BMT centers (78 acute myelogenous leukemia and 64 acute lymphoblastic leukemia) received allogeneic bone marrow from their HLA-identical sibling. The probability of LFS at 60 months is 41% for AML patients and 39% for ALL patients. A better LFS was documented in patients allografted in first CR compared to the patients treated in advanced stage of the disease.

Serum enzyme activities following long-distance running: comparison between Ethiopian and white athletes.

Ethiopian runners are famous for their achievements in long-distance running. The recent immigration of Ethiopians to Israel provided an opportunity to compare some physiological variables between elite Ethiopian and white Israeli runners. Six Ethiopian and five white Israeli runners, aged 20 to 40 years, were studied before and after an 11 km race.

Granulocyte-monocyte colony forming unit content of autologous bone marrow transplants in patients with haematological malignancy.

Cell viability and number of granulocyte-monocyte colony forming units (CFU-GM) were systematically assessed in 57 patients who had undergone transplantation of the autologous bone marrow for treatment of haematologic malignancies. Bone marrow cell cultivation in agarose with feeder layers appeared inferior to that performed in agarose with recombinant human granulocyte-monocyte colony stimulating factor and methylcellulose with phytohaemaglutinin leukocyte-conditioned medium. Since the transplant cells were frozen in liquid nitrogen between harvesting and reinfusion, the following samples were tested: buffy coat cells, buffy coat cells immediately after addition of dimethylsulphoxide, cell sample that had been frozen for 24 hours, and frozen transplant cells at the time of thawing and transplantation.

An autopsy study of systemic fungal infections in patients with hematologic malignancies.

The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of fungal infections detected on autopsy in a group of 40 patients with hematologic malignancies treated with intensive chemotherapy or bone marrow transplantation, and to evaluate the risk factors for fungal infections. A control group included 38 patients with nonhematologic diseases and without granulocytopenia but with at least one of the known risk factors for fungal infections. Standard histopathological and microbiological methods were used.

Malignant germ cell tumors of the ovary: a study of 20 cases.

In a study of 20 patients diagnosed with malignant ovarian germ cell tumors between 1961 and 1993, clinical and pathologic findings were evaluated. Of the 20 patients, seven (35%) had dysgerminoma, two (10%) endodermal sinus tumor, three (15%) malignant teratoma, one (5%) malignant struma ovarii, one (5%) primary ovarian carcinoid, two (10%) benign teratoma with malignant transformation, and four (20%) combination germ cell tumor. Twelve patients (60%) had stage IA, five (25%) stage IC, and three (15%) stage IIIC.

Donor buffy-coat infusion and chemotherapy for leukemia in relapse after marrow transplantation.

A patient relapsing with blastic lymphoid transformation of chronic myeloid leukemia after bone marrow transplantation received donor buffy-coat infusion. Low-dose chemotherapy was added because of a rapid WBC increase. Complete hematologic and cytogenetic remission was obtained.

Molecular monitoring of minimal residual disease in acute promyelocytic leukemia by the polymerase chain reaction assay for the PML/RAR alpha (retinoic acid receptor-alpha) fusion transcript in patients treated with all-trans retinoic acid followed by chemotherapy.

Five acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) patients who achieved a complete remission (CR) with all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) underwent residual disease monitoring through reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for PML/retinoic acid receptor-alpha (PML/RAR alpha) fusion transcript. All received consolidation chemotherapy in CR, one in the form of autologous bone marrow transplantation (ABMT). In four of the patients PCR was positive for the PML/RAR alpha transcript immediately after ATRA treatment and/or after the first consolidation chemotherapy course.

Autologous bone marrow transplantation for haematological malignancies--experiences of the centre of Zagreb.

From April 1988 to May 1993, 71 patients (32 acute myelogenous leukaemia [AML], 24 acute lymphoblastic leukaemia [ALL], 7 Hodgkin's disease [HD], 5 non-Hodgkin lymphoma [NHL], 2 neuroblastoma, 1 chronic myelogenous leukaemia [CML]) were treated with myeloablative therapy followed by reinfusion of cryopreserved autologous bone marrow (ABMT).
