The effect of exogenous TSH and Achilles tendon reflex time in man.

The effect of exogenous thyrotropin (TSH) -- 3 X 10 IU daily -- on Achilles tendon reflex time (ART) was investigated in the group of 38 in-patients, treated for thyroid cancer. A significant shortening of ART was recorded in a subgroup of hypothyroid persons after the 2nd and 3rd dose of TSH. Moreover, a significant correlation was proved between initial values of ART and their changes after the 2nd and 3rd TSH injection in this group.

Delayed response of ankle jerk time changes in decreasing thyroid function in comparison with the serum cholesterol changes.

Serum cholesterol, PBI and ankle jerk time (AJT) were measured simultaneously in a group of not yet treated patients, where a relatively steady state of thyroid function was expected, and in a treated group, where change to lower thyroid function was supposed (thyrostatic drugs, near total thyroidectomy, radioablation of thyroid). 2.

Familial occurrence of differentiated (non-medullary) thyroid cancer.

Differentiated thyroid cancers were found in mother and son. The diagnosis was made first in the boy where papillary and follicular cancer with lymph node involvement and lung metastatic dissemination was diagnosed at the age of 9. Treatment by surgery, radioiodine and thyroid hormones was highly effective.

Earlier responses in the delay of Korotkoff sounds as compared to the Achilles reflex time in rapid changes of thyroid function in man.

In rapidly changing thyroid state Rodbard's Q-Kd interval (reflecting heart contractility) changes more rapidly, than ART (reflecting skeletal muscle contractility). After withdrawal of substitutive therapy in athyreotic patients the Q-Kd intervals prolongs more rapidly than ART and during intensive treatment of hypothyroidism the Q-Kd interval shortens more rapidly that ART. A more rapid metabolic turnover in heart muscle in comparison with skeletal muscle is proposed as suitable explanation.
