A racemic spirohydantoin derivative with two aromatic substituents, a tetralin and a 4-methoxybenzyl unit, was synthesized and its crystal structure was determined. To define the relationship between molecular stereochemistry and spatial association modes, development of the crystal packing was analyzed through cooperativity of intermolecular interactions. Homo and heterochiral dimeric motifs were stabilized by intermolecular N-H⋅⋅⋅O, C-H⋅⋅⋅O, C-H⋅⋅⋅π interactions and parallel interactions at large offsets (PILO), thus forming alternating double layers.

Seven symmetrical 2,6-distyrylpyridines, phenyl-substituted with hydrogen-bond donors, hydrogen-bond acceptors, halogens and hydrophobic moieties were synthesized and their spectroscopic characterization was done. Solvent effects on the absorption and fluorescence spectra were analyzed and quantified using the Kamlet-Taft and Catalán approach. The obtained results were rationalized by comparison of electrostatic potentials of the molecules in the ground and in excited state and by comparison of the frontier molecular orbitals (HOMO and LUMO), derived from quantum-mechanical calculations (HF, DFT, MP2).

The drug and complexes have been characterized by elemental and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, Fourier transform (FT)-IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, UV-Vis spectroscopy and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The (pseudo)octahedral geometry has been proposed for all complexes based on electronic spectra and magnetic moments.
