Background: There is debate regarding nonoperative versus surgical treatment of thumb ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) tears with avulsion fractures. The aim of this study was to evaluate the fragment size in relation to the UCL footprint size in patients with an avulsion fracture injury and to find risk factors associated with surgical treatment.

Methods: In a cohort of avulsion fracture injury patients, the largest side of the fragment was divided by the average reported UCL footprint size (ff-ratio), and a logistic regression was performed to find variables associated with surgery.

Background: Postoperative infections significantly impact patient outcomes and costs, exacerbated by late diagnoses, yet early reliable predictors are scarce. Existing artificial intelligence (AI) models for postoperative infection prediction often lack external validation or perform poorly in local settings when validated. We aimed to develop locally valid models as part of the PERISCOPE AI system to enable early detection, safer discharge, and more timely treatment of patients.

Background And Purpose:  Safety notices for medical devices such as total knee arthroplasty (TKA) implants may indicate problems in their design or performance that require corrective action to prevent patient harm. Safety notices are often published on national Ministries of Health or regulatory agencies websites. It is unknown whether problems triggering safety notices identify the same implants as those identified by registries as "outlier.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of open subscapularis (SSC) repair by looking at symptom relief, functional range of motion (ROM), and retear rates in patients.
  • Out of 61 patients examined, 72% reported complete symptom relief after surgery, but only 54% achieved a functional ROM necessary for daily tasks.
  • Certain types of tears (Lafosse type IV) were linked to higher chances of ongoing symptoms and retears, indicating the need for careful assessment of tear types during diagnosis and treatment.

Fluoroquinolones (FQs) are considered the most effective antimicrobial treatment for Gram-negative prosthetic joint infection (GN-PJI). Alternatives are needed due to increasing FQ resistance and side effects. We aimed to compare different targeted antimicrobial strategies for GN-PJI managed by debridement, antibiotics, and implant retention (DAIR) or one-stage revision surgery (1SR) and to review the literature of oral treatment options for GN-PJI.

Background: Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a rare disease with an estimated incidence of between 1/25,000 and 1/10,000 globally. The main treatment for OI is the administration of bisphosphonate drugs. Research on clinical, radiographic, and biochemical markers to monitor patients with OI treated with zoledronate can be challenging in countries in which patients have limited national health insurance.

Background: Lack of insight into factors that determine purity and quality of human iPSC (hiPSC)-derived neo-cartilage precludes applications of this powerful technology toward regenerative solutions in the clinical setting. Here, we set out to generate methylome-wide landscapes of hiPSC-derived neo-cartilages from different tissues-of-origin and integrated transcriptome-wide data to identify dissimilarities in set points of methylation with associated transcription and the respective pathways in which these genes act.

Methods: We applied in vitro chondrogenesis using hiPSCs generated from two different tissue sources: skin fibroblasts and articular cartilage.

Radiostereometric analysis (RSA) is the current gold standard to determine implant migration, but it requires bone markers and special equipment. Therefore, we developed VoluMetric Matching Micromotion Analysis (V3MA), a software program for Computed Tomography-based radiostereometric analysis (CT-RSA). This study aimed to determine the accuracy and precision of V3MA in vitro compared to RSA and provide a clinical proof of concept.

Background: Postoperative infections remain a crucial challenge in health care, resulting in high morbidity, mortality, and costs. Accurate identification and labeling of patients with postoperative bacterial infections is crucial for developing prediction models, validating biomarkers, and implementing surveillance systems in clinical practice.

Objective: This scoping review aimed to explore methods for identifying patients with postoperative infections using electronic health record (EHR) data to go beyond the reference standard of manual chart review.

Background And Purpose:  Developmental dysplasia (DDH) and Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease (LCPD) are common indications for total hip arthroplasty (THA) at a young age, and may be associated with increased revision risk. We aimed to investigate the 10-year cumulative aseptic cup revision and overall revision risk of THA, and investigated whether these are increased compared with THA for primary osteoarthritis (OA) in patients below 55 years.

Methods:  All THAs (2007-2019) in patients under the age of 55 for the indications OA, DDH, and LCPD were extracted from the Dutch Arthroplasty register.

Aims: The aim of this study was to compare the migration of the femoral component, five years postoperatively, between patients with a highly cross-linked polyethylene (HXLPE) insert and those with a conventional polyethylene (PE) insert in an uncemented Triathlon fixed insert cruciate-retaining total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Secondary aims included clinical outcomes and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). We have previously reported the migration and outcome of the tibial components in these patients.

Background: A pectoralis major (PM) transfer is a viable treatment option for patients with scapular winging due to long thoracic nerve (LTN) palsy not responding to nonsurgical management. However, the long-term outcomes remain unknown. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term outcome of shoulder function (ie, minimum follow-up of 10 years) and quality-of-life (QoL) of patients treated for scapular winging due to LTN palsy with a PM transfer.

Background: The purpose of the study was to gain insight into how clinically relevant improvement in patient-reported outcome measure scores after total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) may be underestimated or overestimated, we compared patient-reported outcome measure respondents and nonrespondents on their adverse event rates and assessed whether adverse event occurrence was associated with clinically relevant patient-reported outcome measure improvement from those without adverse events.

Methods: All primary THAs and TKAs performed in 19 Dutch hospitals between January 2017 and December 2019 were included. The hip disability and osteoarthritis outcome score-physical function short form (HOOS-PS) and knee injury and osteoarthritis outcome score-physical function short form (KOOS-PS) were used to assess the physical function after THA and TKA, respectively.

Background: Radiostereometric analysis (RSA) provides highly accurate data about the migration of a total knee arthroplasty (TKA) component. However, patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) reflect the patients' perspective of their functional status, pain, and overall health after TKA. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between tibial implant migration and change in postoperative PROMs and clinical scores, using data pooled from long-term follow-up RSA studies.

Metal-implant associated bacterial infections are a major clinical problem due to antibiotic treatment failure. As an alternative, we determined the effects of bacteriophage ISP on clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus in various stages of its life cycle in relation to biofilm formation and maturation. ISP effectively eliminated all planktonic phase bacteria, whereas its efficacy was reduced against bacteria attached to the metal implant and bacteria embedded within biofilms.
