Enhancing broadly neutralising antibody suppression of HIV by immune modulation and vaccination.

Although HIV infection can be managed with antiretroviral drugs, there is no cure and therapy has to be taken for life. Recent successes in animal models with HIV-specific broadly neutralising antibodies (bNAbs) have led to long-term virological remission and even possible cures in some cases. This has resulted in substantial investment in human studies to explore bNAbs as a curative intervention for HIV infection.

A recent psychobiography purposively sampled Joe Slovo to uncover, reconstruct and illustrate significant trajectories of his development. Slovo's (1926-1995) lifelong dedication to the struggle against Apartheid has been widely acknowledged, and he held longstanding leadership positions in various South African liberation movements.

Using a Nominal Group Technique to Inform a Curriculum of a Short Learning Programme for Peer Mentor Training in a Health Sciences Context.

Background: The purpose of this study was to explore the use of a modified nominal group technique (mNGT) to inform the curriculum of a Short Learning Programme for peer mentors in the Bachelor of Clinical Medical Practice (BCMP) program.

Methods: An mNGT was used to achieve group consensus. Research participants included academic staff and students of the BCMP program called clinical associate (ClinA) students.

A Retrospective Analysis of the Clinicopathological Features of Patients with Tuberculous Mastitis: A Single Institution's Experience.

Introduction: Tuberculosis remains a global health burden, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Breast tuberculosis is a rare disease with minimal research available. This disease produces a diagnostic challenge as the clinical presentation is variable, and diagnosis often requires additional investigations.

Paravertebral paraganglioma with spinal extension: a case report.

Background: Paragangliomas are rare neuroendocrine tumors. While paragangliomas of the spine are rare, those located in non-cauda equina areas with spinal canal extension are even rarer.

Case Presentation: We present a case of a 23-year-old female of African descent with a primary thoracic paraganglioma with intervertebral extension resulting in displacement and compression of the spinal cord and extensive local invasion of the surrounding structures.

Triple-negative breast cancer - a retrospective audit of 151 cases seen at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital Breast Unit.

Background: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive, rapidly lethal subgroup of breast cancer which disproportionately affects women of African descent. Lacking hormone receptor expression and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) overexpression, it is difficult to treat. Despite an initial good response to chemotherapy, relapse is common and survival short.

Radiological features of oral and maxillofacial plasmablastic lymphomas.

Objective: The purpose of the current study was to report on the clinical presentation and radiological features of 72 cases of oral and maxillofacial plasmablastic lymphomas (PBL).

Methods: Histologically confirmed cases of PBL were retrospectively reviewed over a 10-year period. Demographic and clinical data were retrieved from the patient's records.

Clinical and radiologic spectrum of glandular odontogenic cysts: A multicenter study of 92 cases.

Objective: The purpose of this multicenter retrospective study was to report the clinical and radiologic features of 92 glandular odontogenic cysts (GOCs) diagnosed over a 20-year period.

Study Design: Histologically confirmed cases of GOC were retrospectively reviewed from 4 oral pathology laboratories in South Africa and Brazil to categorize the clinical and radiologic spectrum of GOCs.

Combining genomic resources could facilitate development for across country selection, but the influence of population structures could be important to the compatability of genomic data from varying origins.

Atypical Triplane Fracture-Anteromedial Epiphyseal Sleeve Avulsion Pattern.

Atypical triplane fractures are unusual, but when they occur, the anteromedial epiphyseal sleeve avulsion pattern appears to be the most frequent. We present a classic case of the latter, which supports the introduction of an additional category to the classification of these fractures.

Double Gemination or Fusion of a Permanent Mandibular Second Molar: A Case Report.

Gemination and fusion are developmental conditions affecting the shape of teeth in both primary and permanent dentition. A 12-year-old girl presented for clinical assessment and the examination revealed an unusually shaped mandibular right second molar with irreversible pulpitis. Correlation of the intraoral and radiological appearance of this tooth suggested a diagnosis of either double gemination or fusion.

The effect of tree shade on ambient conditions and heat stress indicator traits of new-born South African Mutton Merino and Dormer lambs: Preliminary results.

This preliminary study investigated the provision of shade on heat stress indicators of South African Mutton Merino (SAMM) and Dormer lambs shortly after birth, during the autumn 2017 and 2018 lambing seasons. Newborn lambs were assessed to determine whether welfare, as assessed by respiratory response and rectal temperature as heat stress indicators, survival and early growth benefitted from the provision of shade. Groups consisting of 4-17 pregnant SAMM and Dormer ewes were randomly allocated to 5-10 paddocks with natural shade from trees and 5-9 paddocks that were directly in the sun with no shade available.

Cytomegalovirus-associated supraglottic mass in a patient on immunosuppressive therapy.

A 33-year-old woman on chronic immunosuppressive treatment for rheumatoid arthritis with a history of inhaled methamphetamine use presented with respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation for a prolonged period. After being given plasma exchange, pulses of methylprednisolone and a dose of cyclosporine for suspected ANCA (anti-neutrophilic cytoplasmic autoantibodies) vasculitis, she developed an obstructive supraglottic laryngeal mass that required a tracheostomy to bypass. Biopsy findings revealed the mass to be an inflammatory pseudomass secondary to cytomegalovirus (CMV).

Long term genetic selection for reproductive success affects neonatal lamb vitality across cold stress conditions.

Adverse weather conditions are important contributors to mortality in new-born lambs. Previous studies have shown variation between lambs in their ability to cope with circumstances of cold stress, and genetic selection could be a viable option for improving animal robustness. The Elsenburg Merino flock was divergently selected on number of lambs weaned (NLW).

Radiological spectrum of metastasis to the oral and maxillofacial region.

Objective: Oral and maxillofacial metastasis may be the first indication of an undiscovered malignancy in a significant number of cases. Therefore, the rationale of this article is to highlight the clinical and radiological presentation of metastatic lesions involving the oral and maxillofacial region. This will serve as a reference for clinicians, who may first encounter patients with possible metastatic lesions in this region.

Calcifying odontogenic cysts: A 20-year retrospective clinical and radiological review.

Objective: Calcifying odontogenic cysts (COCs) exhibit diverse clinical behaviours and may be associated with other benign odontogenic tumours. In this study, the clinical and radiological features of COCs were analysed according to subtypes based on the classification by Praetorius et al. Emphasis was placed on cases exhibiting atypical or aggressive radiological appearances.
