Resistance training (RT) has been considered an intervention with effective stimulus on bone mineral formation and is, therefore, recommended to decrease the rate of bone morpho-functional proprieties loss with aging. Thus, this meta-analysis aimed to analyze the effectiveness of RT protocols in promoting changes in bone mineral density (BMD) in older adults. The systematic reviews and meta-analysis followed the PRISMA guidelines (PROSPERO CRD42020170859).

This study aimed to analyze whether the relationship between regional and whole-body fat-free mass (FFM) and strength is related to FFM distribution and area according to limb involvement. Thirty well-trained male young adults underwent one-repetition maximum test (1RM) to assess the strength in arm curl (AC), bench press (BP), seated row (SR), leg press 45° (LP45), knee extension (KE), and leg curl (LC). Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to evaluate FFM.

We used measurements of metabolic perturbation obtained after sparring to estimate energetics contribution during no-gi Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Ten advanced grapplers performed two six-minute sparring bouts separated by 24 hours. Kinetics of recovery rate of oxygen uptake was modelled and post-combat-sparring blood-lactate concentration measured to estimate oxygen equivalents for phospholytic and glycolytic components of anaerobic energetics, respectively.

Fortunately, traumatic total amputations of the nose are rare, especially in children. Their reconstructions generally require several operative steps, most often associating cartilaginous grafts (rib and/or concha), a free radial antebrachial flap for mucosal reconstruction and a frontal flap for the skin covering. These are therefore long and complex procedures requiring a trained surgical team and maximum patient adherence to their treatment plan.

Objective: To investigate the effect of cosmetic camouflage in health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in women with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and permanent facial skin damage.

Methods: This is a randomized controlled clinical trial (Universal Trial Number: U1111-1210-2554e) with SLE women from outpatients using ACR/1997 and/or SLICC/2012 criteria, aged over 18 years old, with modified SLEDAI 2k < 4 and permanent facial skin damage, recruited in two tertiary centers to use cosmetic camouflage (n = 36) or no intervention (n = 20). Endpoints were score variations in SLE Quality of Life (SLEQoL) (total and each domain), Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), Rosenberg self-esteem scale and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), after daily use of cosmetic camouflage for 12 +/-2 weeks (Phase I), "as needed" use of cosmetic camouflage for another 12 +/-2 weeks (Phase II), and during total follow up (24 +/-2 weeks).

We have explored the relationship between possible hemostatic changes and clinical manifestation of the systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) as a function of greater or lesser disease activity according to Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index-2000 (SLEDAI-2K) criteria. Endothelial injury and hypercoagulability were investigated in patients with SLE by measuring thrombomodulin (TM), D-dimer (DDi) and thrombin generation (TG) potential. A total of 90 participants were distributed into three groups: 1) women with SLE presenting with low disease activity (laSLE) (SLEDAI-2K ≤ 4), 2) women with SLE presenting with moderate to high disease activity (mhaSLE) (SLEDAI-2K > 4), and 3) a control group comprising healthy women.

Unicystic ameloblastoma (UA), a benign odontogenic tumor of the jaw, represents less than a third of all ameloblastomas and seems less aggressive than other types of ameloblastoma. We present here the first case of UA that developed prenatally and was successfully managed in the early neonatal period with marsupialization and curettage performed carefully to avoid injury to the tooth germ. BRAF and SMO mutations were not detected.

  • Glioma is the most common and aggressive malignant brain tumor in adults, showing a poor prognosis and potentially being influenced by lifestyle factors and genetic variations.
  • In a study of 303 individuals, key lifestyle risk factors for gliomas included smoking, alcohol use, systemic arterial hypertension, and diabetes, with alcohol and hypertension identified as significant independent risks.
  • Patients with low-grade gliomas had a significantly higher one-year survival rate compared to high-grade patients, while genetic polymorphisms related to cell cycle and DNA repair were not linked to glioma risk.

Objective: This study has investigated whether high levels of Reticulocytes-C4d (R-C4d) and Platelets-C4d (P-C4d) reflecting recent activity in SLE patients are correlated with changes in natural anticoagulation components, coagulation activation and endothelial injury markers.

Methods: This study included three groups: 1) healthy women (control, n = 30); 2) women with low activity of the disease (SLEDAI 2 K ≤ 4, n = 30); 3) women with active disease (moderate or high activity) (SLEDAI 2 K > 4, n = 30). Median fluorescence intensity (MFI) of R-C4d and P-C4d were determined by flow cytometry using double labeling with specific monoclonal antibodies.

Background: Ameloblastoma is a rare benign odontogenic tumor with a metastasis rate estimated at 2% of cases, mainly involving the lung (80%) and lymph nodes (20%).

Methods: We hereby present the case of a 26 year old patient with a history of locally recurrent mandibular ameloblastoma who developed a temporal intracranial ameloblastoma tumor requiring a collaborative neurosurgical and maxillo-facial radical surgical approach.

Conclusion: Although ameloblastomas are histologically benign, the temporal topography questions the dissemination pathophysiology of the tumor (metastasis or local extension through temporal muscle fibers), mainly relevant in cases of multiple recurrences.

The relationship between muscle strength and bone mineral content (BMC) and bone mineral density (BMD) is supposed from the assumption of the mechanical stress influence on bone tissue metabolism. However, the direct relationship is not well established in younger men, since the enhancement of force able to produce effective changes in bone health, still needs to be further studied. This study aimed to analyze the influence of muscle strength on BMC and BMD in undergraduate students.
