Although lichenized fungi are among the most reliable indicators of forest quality and represent a considerable part of forest biodiversity, methods maximizing completeness of their species lists per area are lacking. Employing a novel methodological approach including a multi-expert competition and a search for local hot-spot plots, we have obtained outstanding data about epiphytic lichen biota in a part of the largest Central European virgin forest reserve Uholka-Shyrokyi Luh situated in Ukrainian Carpathians. Our field research consisted of two four-day periods: (1) an overall floristic survey and a search for spots with raised lichen diversity, and (2) survey in four one-hectare plots established in lichen diversity hot-spots along an altitudinal gradient.

The antral follicle count (AFC) in cattle is consistent throughout the estrous cycle of individual cows, and cows with a lower AFC have lower fertility. We assessed the AFC at random stages of the estrous cycle, examined the correlation between AFC classifications, and determined the relationship between the most rapid and practical laboratory-based AFC classification (AFC of follicles of ≥ 2 mm in diameter) and fertility measures in New Zealand lactating dairy cows. Cows detected in estrus (n = 202) or not (n = 239) during the first 4 weeks of the breeding season were subjected to ultrasonography and classified as having a high, medium, or low AFC at the time of scanning (on-site classification).

Three components of mating call (pulse duration, cycle length, and fundamental frequency) were measured and six diagnostic enzyme loci scored across the hybrid zone between the toads Bombina bombina and B. variegata. All three call components differ significantly, but only cycle length is diagnostic.

A model of reinforcement in a hybrid zone is developed in which an allele causing reinforcement may only be favored in the center of the hybrid zone and is selected against elsewhere. When reinforcement is favored only in the hybrid zone, the swamping effect of gene flow severely impedes the evolution of reinforcement: reinforcement can only occur when β < sγ /4 (s is selection against hybrids, γ is the strength of reinforcement, and β is the strength of selection against reinforcement). Although the region in which reinforcement can occur is narrower when selection against hybrids is stronger, strong selection is still more likely to be reinforced despite the effects of gene flow.
