Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), of which there are several variants. The three major variants (Alpha, Delta, and Omicron) carry the N501Y, L452R, and Q493R/Q498R mutations, respectively, in the gene. Control of COVID-19 requires rapid and reliable detection of not only SARS-CoV-2 but also its variants.

Article Synopsis
  • COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, can be deadly, with variants like the L452R mutation showing increased ability to bind to human cell receptors.
  • Researchers developed a new detection method called RT-LAMP-BART, which quickly identifies SARS-CoV-2 and its mutations, demonstrating high specificity and sensitivity compared to traditional testing methods.
  • The RT-LAMP-BART assay is noted for its speed and accuracy, detecting low levels of the virus while being simpler and more cost-effective than conventional RT-PCR tests.

We describe the first direct testing of the antimicrobial susceptibilities of bacterial pathogens in human clinical fluid samples by the use of ATP bioluminescence. We developed an ATP bioluminescence assay that eliminates somatic sources of ATP to selectively quantify the bacterial load in clinical urine specimens with a sensitivity of <1,000 CFU per milliliter. There was a log-log relationship between light emission and the numbers of CFU in clinical urine specimens.
