Calculation of a Reference Interval for Rectal Temperature in Adult Dogs Presenting for Veterinary Care Using an Algorithm for Mixed Data.

Veterinarians rely on the measurement of canine body temperature to define the health status of dogs, but no studies exist defining a reference range for rectal temperature on a large group of dogs. The aim of this study was to define the rectal body temperature of dogs based on a large data set of diseased and healthy animals and to evaluate the capability of the employed algorithm to calculate reference intervals of numerical clinical data. Out of 24,013 recorded measurements, statistical analysis was applied to data from 9782 adult dogs that underwent clinical examination at a university clinic between 2008 and 2017.

Safety and Efficacy of Cervical Ripening and Induction of Labor Using Prostaglandin E1 in Primiparas, Multiparas and Grand Multiparas.

Objective: To compare the efficacy and safety of cervical ripening and induction of labor with prostaglandin E1 among primiparas, multiparas and grand multiparas.

Study Design: This was a retrospective cohort study.

Results: Between January and December 2017, 1713 women underwent cervical ripening and induction of labor with prostaglandin E1: 523 were primiparas, 656 were multiparas, and 534 were grand multiparas.

Titers of SARS CoV-2 antibodies in cord blood of neonates whose mothers contracted SARS CoV-2 (COVID-19) during pregnancy and in those whose mothers were vaccinated with mRNA to SARS CoV-2 during pregnancy.

Objective: We compared neonatal immunity after vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 during pregnancy to that achieved after maternal infection.

Study Design: We tested cord blood from women infected with SARS-CoV-2 during pregnancy (group 1, n = 29), women who were vaccinated during pregnancy (group 2, n = 29) and from women not infected and not vaccinated (Group 3, n = 21) for titers of antibodies to both SARS-CoV-2 spike and 'N' proteins.

Results: Seventy-nine women were included: Antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 spike protein were detected in all samples from Group 1 and 2.

[Acquired transient Fanconi syndrome after feeding jerky treats in dogs - A case series].

Between April 2018 and August 2019, 6 dogs with laboratory diagnostic evidence of Fanconi syndrome were presented to the Tierklinik Hofheim. The presumptive diagnosis was confirmed via urine amino acid analysis in all dogs. In 5 of the 6 dogs an alimentary origin was suspected, in 3 dogs the course of the disease could be followed.

Impact of radioiodine treatment on acute phase proteins in hyperthyroid cats.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of radioiodine treatment (RIT) on the acute phase proteins (APPs) serum amyloid A (SAA), alpha-1-acid glycoprotein (AGP) and haptoglobin (Hp) in hyperthyroid cats.

Methods: Between June 2013 and November 2014, 33 hyperthyroid cats without clinical or laboratory signs of inflammatory or neoplastic disease and a body weight >2.5 kg were enrolled.

Objectives: The aim of the study was to describe the coagulatory state of hyperthyroid cats before and after successful radioiodine therapy (RIT) compared with healthy age-matched controls, using classical coagulation parameters and thromboelastogram (TEG) as a global assessment method. This study reports on a retrospective evaluation of epidemiological data from calcium oxalate stones in dogs differentiated into calcium oxalate monohydrate (Whewellite, Wh) and calcium oxalate dihydrate (Weddellite, Wd). Of the 22 456 uroliths submitted from 1979 to 2015, 6690 (29.8%) were composed of > 70% calcium oxalate.

Fowlpox virus (FWPV), the type species of the genus Avipoxvirus family Poxviridae, is a large double-stranded DNA virus that causes fowlpox in chickens and turkeys. Notably, sequences of the avian retrovirus reticuloendotheliosis virus (REV) are frequently found integrated into the genome of FWPV. Long-Term Effects of Pregnancy Complications on Maternal Health: A Review.

Plasma Symmetric Dimethylarginine Concentration in Dogs with Acute Kidney Injury and Chronic Kidney Disease.

Background: Symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) is considered a biomarker for early detection of renal dysfunction in human patients with acute kidney injury (AKI). At present, no studies exist analyzing the relevance of SDMA in dogs with AKI.

Hypothesis/objectives: SDMA would correctly identify dogs with renal disease but would not be able to differentiate between AKI and CKD.

Two dogs with increased thyroxin concentrations compatible with hyperthyroidism were referred for further examinations. One dog displayed clinical signs of hyperthyroidism. Based on history, clinical examination, laboratory evaluation and scintigraphy an alimentary thyrotoxicosis was identified.

Applicability of Tc-Labeled Human Serum Albumin Scintigraphy in Dogs With Protein-Losing Enteropathy.

Background: Diagnosis of protein loss into the gastrointestinal tract using noninvasive techniques is challenging. In people, scintigraphy not only is a sensitive tool to confirm protein-losing enteropathy (PLE), but it also allows for localization of protein loss.

Hypothesis/objectives: To investigate the feasibility of Tc-labeled human serum albumin (HSA) scintigraphy in dogs with PLE in comparison with control dogs.

Leptin and ghrelin concentration in hyperthyroid cats before and after radioactive iodine therapy compared to euthyroid control cats.

Objective: Leptin and ghrelin, two peptide hormones with antagonistic effects on satiety and energy balance, could be involved in the pathogenesis of weight loss and polyphagia in cats with hyperthyroidism. Leptin generally decreases appetite and increases energy expenditure, while ghrelin exerts the opposite effects.

Materials And Methods: Leptin and ghrelin were measured in 42 client owned hyperthyroid cats with a body condition score (BCS) ≤ 5/9 before (T0) and 4 weeks after radioactive iodine treatment (RAIT) (T1).

Comparison of a CHOP-LAsp-based protocol with and without maintenance for canine multicentric lymphoma.

The recommendation to treat canine lymphoma with a discontinuous protocol is based on small case numbers and mostly historic controls. This study compares duration of first remission (DFR) and overall survival time (ST) with a discontinuous protocol to the same protocol with maintenance phase. 408 dogs were treated with a CHOP-LAsp (C=cyclophosphamide; H=hydroxydaunorubicin; O=Oncovin; P=prednisolone; LAsp=l-asparaginase)-based 28-week induction protocol.
