The seasonal influenza vaccine contains strains of viruses from distinct subtypes that are grown independently and then combined. However, most individuals exhibit a more robust response to one of these strains and thus are vulnerable to infection by others. By studying a monozygotic twin cohort, we found that although prior exposure is a factor, host genetics are a stronger driver of subtype bias to influenza viral strains.

In recent years, nanotechnology and materials science have evolved and matured, making it increasingly easier to design and fabricate next-generation 3D microelectronics. The process has changed drastically from traditional 2D microelectronics, resulting in improved performance, higher integration density, and new functionalities. As applications become more complex and power-intensive, this technology can address the demands of high-performance computing, advanced sensors, and cutting-edge communication systems wearable, flexible devices, To manufacture higher-density microelectronics, recent advances in the fabrication of such 3D devices are discussed.

To compare deprescribing rates of stress ulcer prophylaxis (SUP) between children receiving "usual-dose" (<4 mg/kg/day methylprednisolone equivalents) versus "high-dose" (≥4 mg/kg/day methylprednisolone equivalents) corticosteroids for status asthmaticus in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). This retrospective, cohort study included children <18 years of age receiving corticosteroids for status asthmaticus and SUP from 1/1/2017 to 6/31/2022. The primary objective was to compare the number of children that were deprescribed SUP following transition from the PICU to the floor and at hospital discharge between groups.

Biopharmaceutical Classification Systems (BCS) class II drugs show poor solubility and high permeability in the body. Fenofibrate (FF) is a classic example of a BCS class II drug, used to treat high cholesterol and triglyceride (fat-like substances) levels in the blood. Atomic layer coating (ALC) is a surface engineering technology adapted from the semiconductor industry, where metal oxides are coated one atomic layer at a time over the active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) particles.

Objective:  This study aimed to externally validate the Preeclampsia Integrated Estimate of Risk (fullPIERS) risk prediction model in a cohort of pregnant individuals with preeclampsia in the United States.

Study Design:  This was a retrospective study of individuals with preeclampsia who delivered at 22 weeks or greater from January 1, 2010, to December 31, 2020. The primary outcome was a composite of maternal mortality or other serious complications of preeclampsia occurring within 48 hours of admission.

Plastics and plasticizers accumulate in the ecological niches affecting biodiversity, and human and environmental health. Bacteria degrading polyethylene terephthalate (PET) were screened and PETases involved in PET degradation were characterized. Here, we identified a carboxylesterase Dkca1 of 48.

Article Synopsis
  • Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic inflammatory illness that affects about 1-2% of adults, with a higher prevalence in middle-aged women, while hypothyroidism is a common endocrine condition seen in primary care.
  • A study aimed to compare the occurrence of OLP in patients with and without hypothyroidism involved 1200 patients, with equal groups of 600 each.
  • The results showed that 3.45% of those with hypothyroidism had OLP, compared to only 1.34% of those without, indicating a 2.37 times higher prevalence of OLP among individuals with hypothyroidism.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study assessed the effectiveness of turmeric, ashwagandha, and aloe vera in treating oral lichen planus (OLP), a painful mouth condition.
  • - Thirty patients with confirmed OLP were divided into three groups, each receiving a topical treatment of one of the natural remedies for three weeks, applied twice daily.
  • - After four months, all groups experienced significant relief in symptoms, indicating these plant-based treatments could be viable alternatives for those not responding to standard corticosteroid therapies.

Purpose: Standard treatment for basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is surgical resection. However, a subset of locally advanced BCCs may be unresectable, or surgery would result in unacceptable functional or cosmetic defects. Outcomes after definitive radiation therapy for locally advanced BCC in the contemporary era are not well established.

Smooth muscle organs of the lower urinary tract comprise the bladder detrusor and urethral wall, which have a reciprocal contractile relationship during urine storage and micturition. As the bladder fills with urine, detrusor smooth muscle cells (DSMCs) remain relaxed to accommodate increases in intravesical pressure while urethral smooth muscle cells (USMCs) sustain tone to occlude the urethral orifice, preventing leakage. While neither organ displays coordinated regular contractions as occurs in small intestine, lymphatics or renal pelvis, they do exhibit patterns of rhythmicity at cellular and tissue levels.

Aging and, in particular, the emergence of age-related disorders is associated with tissue dysfunction and macromolecular damage, some of which can be attributable to accumulated oxidative damage. In the current study, we determine the potential of 'plasma-derived fraction (E5)' for cellular rejuvenation and extending the lifespan of Sprague Dawley (SD) rats. This is a unique study wherein we have used 24-month-old rats and monitored them until the end of their lifespan with and without E5 treatment.

infections present a significant threat to the global healthcare system. The increasing resistance to existing antibiotics and their limited efficacy underscores the urgent need to identify new antibacterial agents with low toxicity to effectively combat various infections. Hence, in this study, we have screened T-muurolol for possible interactions with several -specific bacterial proteins to establish its potential as an alternative antibacterial agent.

Background: The field of digital mental health has followed an exponential growth trajectory in recent years. While the evidence base has increased significantly, its adoption within health and care services has been slowed by several challenges, including a lack of knowledge from researchers regarding how to navigate the pathway for mandatory regulatory approval. This paper details the steps that a team must take to achieve the required approvals to carry out a research study using a novel digital mental health intervention.

Background: Climate change poses a significant threat to agricultural production worldwide, with developing countries being particularly vulnerable to its negative impacts. Agriculture, which is a crucial factor in ensuring food security and livelihoods, is particularly vulnerable to changes in climate patterns, such as increased temperatures, drought, and extreme weather events. One approach to addressing these challenges is by promoting the adoption of climate-smart agriculture (CSA) practices among farmers.
