The recovery of Co(II), Mn(II), Ni(II), and Cu(II) from black mass e-waste solutions through cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) and nanocrystals (CNCs) was investigated. These materials were synthetized by TEMPO-oxidation followed by high-pressure homogenization, and acid hydrolysis, respectively. The NC characterization included the measurement of consistency, cationic demand, carboxylic content, dissolved amorphous cellulose, and transmittance at λ = 600 nm.

Breathing behaviour is subject to emotional regulation, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we demonstrate a direct relationship between the central amygdala, a major output hub of the limbic system associated with emotional brain function, and the brainstem pre-Bötzinger complex, which generates the fundamental rhythm and pattern for breathing. The connection between these two sites is monosynaptic and inhibitory, involving GABAergic central amygdala neurons whose axonal projections act predominantly via ionotropic GABA receptors to produce inhibitory postsynaptic currents in pre-Bötzinger neurons.

Mimicking enzymatic processes carried out by natural enzymes, which are highly efficient biocatalysts with key roles in living organisms, attracts much interest but constitutes a synthetic challenge. Biological metal-organic frameworks (bioMOFs) are potential candidates to be enzyme catalysis mimics, as they offer the possibility to combine biometals and biomolecules into open-framework porous structures capable of simulating the catalytic pockets of enzymes. In this work, we first study the catalase activity of a previously reported bioMOF, derived from the amino acid -serine, with formula {CaCu[(,)-serimox](OH)(HO)} · 39HO () (serimox = bis[(S)-serine]oxalyl diamide), which is indeed capable to mimic catalase enzymes, in charge of preventing cell oxidative damage by decomposing, efficiently, hydrogen peroxide to water and oxygen (2HO → 2 HO + O).

Both rhythms emerge in tandem from a single brainstem site, but whether and how a single cell population can generate two disparate rhythms remains unclear. We studied the depuration mechanisms of metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, Mn, Ni, Cr, Fe) in Neohelice granulata, from sites with different human impacts (PC, a more impacted site and VM, a less impacted one). Our objectives included assessing metal concentrations (essential and non-essential) before and after depuration treatment, evaluating biochemical biomarkers (non-enzymatic and enzymatic) pre and post-treatment, and determining the role of metal-rich granules (MRG) in depuration. We observed variability in metals and biomarkers post-depuration, with no significant differences observed in PC, while Cd and Mn increased and Ni, Cu, and Fe decreased in VM.
