Purpose: The purpose of this review is to explore the molecular foundations of ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN), focusing on the genetic and epigenetic aspects. While current management strategies include surgical excision and medical therapies, the understanding of OSSN's molecular basis remains limited, hindering the development of targeted treatments.

Methods: A comprehensive MEDLINE search was conducted for literature published between January 1993 and October 2023.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study evaluates the effectiveness and safety of free dermal fat graft (FDFG) reconstruction after parotidectomy by analyzing clinical complications and patient satisfaction.
  • - Researchers conducted a systematic review of 20 studies involving 922 reconstructions and found low rates of complications like hematoma and infection, with most donor site issues being under 1%.
  • - Results show that FDFG is a safe and effective method for correcting facial contour deformities, with high patient satisfaction and low incidence of complications such as Frey's syndrome.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to compare the outcomes of vascular anastomosis using loupes magnification versus operative microscope magnification in reconstructive surgery.

Methods: We performed a systematic review of MEDLINE (via PubMed), Scopus and Cochrane Library database according to the PRISMA guidelines. Comparative studies between the two techniques and single arm studies reporting on loupes reconstruction were included.

Introduction: Keratoconus is a progressive ocular disorder associated with numerous systemic diseases, many of which affect the musculoskeletal system. Although the etiology and pathophysiology of the disorder remain elusive, recent studies suggest a significant role of genetic predisposition in the pathogenesis of keratoconus. This case report aims to elucidate a potential genetic association in a patient presenting with keratoconus, severe pectus excavatum, generalized muscular weakness, and skeletal deformities.

The present report describes a case of semi-autologous corneal transplantation with bilateral surgery using two operating microscopes simultaneously. An 86-year-old man with history of six prior failed penetrating keratoplasties in his right eye presented with decreased vision. His other eye was deeply amblyopic but had a clear 30-year-old Castroviejo-square graft with an endothelial cell count of 803 cells/mm.

Purpose: Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) are considered the gold standard for the practice of evidence-based medicine. The purpose of this study is to systematically assess the reporting of sample size calculations in ophthalmology RCTs in 5 leading journals over a 20-year period. Reviewing sample size calculations in ophthalmology RCTs will shed light on the methodological quality of RCTs and, by extension, on the validity of published results.

Article Synopsis
  • This study compares the effectiveness of Supraclavicular Artery Island (SAI) Flap and Free Tissue Transfer for reconstructing the head and neck.
  • A systematic review of eight studies involving 402 patients was conducted to assess the outcomes of both techniques.
  • Results show no significant differences in major complications or flap success rates, indicating that both methods are comparably effective for this type of reconstruction.
