Restoration of sleep-wake behavior following short photoperiod exposure in ventral subicular lesioned male Wistar rats: A 24-h sleep-wake electroencephalographical study.

The ventral subiculum regulates emotion, stress responses, and spatial and social cognition. In our previous studies, we have demonstrated anxiety- and depression-like symptoms, deficits in spatial and social cognition in ventral subicular lesioned (VSL) rats, and restoration of affective and cognitive behaviors following photoperiod manipulation (short photoperiod regime, SPR; 6:18 LD cycle). In the present study, we have studied the impact of VSL on sleep-wake behavioral patterns and the effect of SPR on sleep-wakefulness behavior.

Long term exposure to combination paradigm of environmental enrichment, physical exercise and diet reverses the spatial memory deficits and restores hippocampal neurogenesis in ventral subicular lesioned rats.

Subiculum is an important structure of the hippocampal formation and plays an imperative role in spatial learning and memory functions. We have demonstrated earlier the cognitive impairment following bilateral ventral subicular lesion (VSL) in rats. We found that short term exposure to enriched environment (EE) did not help to reverse the spatial memory deficits in water maze task suggesting the need for an appropriate enriched paradigm towards the recovery of spatial memory.

NIH-3T3 fibroblast transplants enhance host regeneration and improve spatial learning in ventral subicular lesioned rats.

Transplants, besides providing neural replacement, also stimulate host regeneration, which could serve as a powerful means to establish functional recovery in CNS insults. Earlier, we have reported the H3-GFP transplant mediated recovery of cognitive functions in the ventral subicular lesioned rats. In the present study, we demonstrate the efficacy of a non-neural fibroblast transplants in mediating host regeneration and functional recovery in ventral subicular lesioned rats.
