Introduction: With the advent of combined antiretroviral therapy (cART), more people infected with HIV are living into older age; 22% of adults receiving care in the UK are aged over 50 years [1]. Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated the effectiveness of antiretroviral therapy (ART) at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Malawi, focusing on a fixed drug combination of stavudine, lamivudine, and nevirapine.
  • Out of 422 patients on ART since 2000, 59% were lost to follow-up, but the 176 patients included in the study showed good clinical results and high nevirapine plasma levels associated with effective treatment.
  • Non-adherence mainly stemmed from drug shortages and financial issues, highlighting the need for consistent, free drug supplies to improve patient retention and adherence.
