Indane-based molecules are effective scaffolds for different pharmaceutical products, so it is relevant to analyze the relation between structure and functionality in indane derivatives. Here, we have characterized the conformational landscape and molecular structure of 1-aminoindane in the gas phase using chirped-excitation Fourier-transform microwave spectroscopy and computational methods. The rotational spectrum confirmed the presence of two conformers, which were identified based on their rotational constants and 14N nuclear quadrupole coupling tensor elements.

Background: Widespread adoption of secure messaging (SM) provides patients with cancer with unprecedented access to medical providers at the expense of increased workload for oncologists. Herein, we analyze oncology SM clinical content and acuity and translate these to estimated cost savings from reduced appointments.

Methods: This population-based retrospective cohort study examined the content of patient-initiated SM threads exchanged through the patient portal website or app over 1 year (June 1, 2021-May 31, 2022) at 21 Kaiser Permanente Northern California oncology practices, which typically do not have patient copayments associated with SM.

Revisiting the Association of ECOG Performance Status With Clinical Outcomes in Diverse Patients With Cancer.

Background: The ECOG performance status (PS) scale was developed to support national clinical trials, but the degree to which ECOG PS predicts clinical outcomes in patient subgroups outside of clinical trials is relatively unknown. This study examined associations between ECOG PS and adverse outcomes in a diverse community oncology population.

Patients And Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, demographic and clinical characteristics, including the most recent ECOG PS between January 1, 2017, and December 31, 2019, were examined for patients receiving cancer treatment within Kaiser Permanente Northern California (KPNC).

Hospital-associated venous thromboembolism prophylaxis use by risk assessment at a large integrated health care network in Northern California.

Background: Hospital-acquired venous thromboembolism (HA VTE) is a preventable complication in hospitalized patients.

Objective: We aimed to examine the use of pharmacologic prophylaxis (pPPX) and compare two risk assessment methods for HA VTE: a retrospective electronic Padua Score (ePaduaKP) and admitting clinician's choice of risk within the admission orderset (low, moderate, or high).

Design, Settings And Participants: We retrospectively analyzed prophylaxis orders for adult medical admissions (2013-2019) at Kaiser Permanente Northern California, excluding surgical and ICU patients.

Mobile phone applications ("apps") are potentially an effective, low-burden method to collect patient-reported outcomes outside the clinical setting. Using such apps consistently and in a timely way is critical for complete and accurate data capture, but no studies of concurrent reporting by cancer patient-caregiver dyads have been published in the peer-reviewed literature. This study assessed app engagement, defined as adherence, timing, and attrition with two smartphone applications, one for adult cancer patients and one for their informal caregivers.

Characterization of CSF inflammatory markers after hemorrhagic stroke and their relationship to disease severity.

Background: The inflammatory response within the central nervous system is a key driver of secondary brain injury after hemorrhagic stroke, both in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) and aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). In this study, we aimed to characterize inflammatory molecules in the blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients within 72 hours of hemorrhage to understand how such molecules vary across disease types and disease severity.

Methods: Biological samples were collected from patients admitted to a single-center Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit with a diagnosis of ICH or aSAH between 2014 and 2022.

Objective: The aim of this study is to assess whether caregivers and adults with cancer adhered to a planned schedule for electronically collecting patient-reported outcomes (PROs) and if PROs were associated with future clinical events.

Water is a fundamental molecule for life, and investigating its interaction with monosaccharides is of great interest in order to understand its influence on their conformational behavior. In this study, we report on the conformational landscape of monosaccharide glyceraldehyde, the simplest aldose sugar, in the presence of a single water molecule in the gas phase. This investigation was performed using a combination of Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy and theoretical calculations.

Cancer Patients' Preferences and Perceptions of Advantages and Disadvantages of Telehealth Visits During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Purpose: We aimed to ascertain oncology patients' perceptions of telehealth versus in-person (IP) visits for different types of clinical encounters.

Methods: We surveyed adults undergoing cancer treatment at Kaiser Permanente Northern California infusion centers between November 2021 and May 2022 using a self-administered questionnaire. Patients were asked about visit modality preferences (video, phone, and IP) for six types of clinical discussions, overall advantages and disadvantages of telehealth (video or phone) versus IP modalities, and barriers to video visit use.

Usability evaluation of mobile phone technologies for capturing cancer patient-reported outcomes and physical functions.

Background: By eliminating the requirement for participants to make frequent visits to research sites, mobile phone applications ("apps") may help to decentralize clinical trials. Apps may also be an effective mechanism for capturing patient-reported outcomes and other endpoints, helping to optimize patient care during and outside of clinical trials.

Objectives: We report on the usability of Digital BioMarkers for Clinical Impact (DigiBioMarC™ (DBM)), a novel smartphone-based app used by cancer patients in conjunction with a wearable device (Apple Watch®).

The role of anion gap normalization time in the management of pediatric diabetic ketoacidosis.

Introduction: Our aims were to determine whether anion gap normalization time (AGNT) correlates with risk factors related to the severity of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) in children, and to characterize AGNT as a criterion for DKA resolution in children admitted with moderate or severe disease.

Methods: A ten-year retrospective cohort study of children admitted to the intensive care unit with DKA. We used a survival analysis approach to determine changes in serum glucose, bicarbonate, pH, and anion gap following admission.

The gas-phase structure determination of α-pinene oxide: An endo-cyclic epoxide of atmospheric interest.

The gas-phase rotational spectra of α-pinene oxide have been recorded using a chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave spectrometer in the 6-18 GHz frequency range. The parent species and all heavy atom isotopologues (13C and 18O) have been observed in their natural abundance. The experimental rotational constants of all isotopic species observed have been determined and used to obtain the substitution (rs) and the effective (r0) structures of the most stable conformer of α-pinene oxide.

A novel smartphone application for the informal caregivers of cancer patients: Usability study.

Informal caregivers are a critical source of support for cancer patients. However, their perspectives are not routinely collected, despite health impacts related to the burden of caregiving. We created the TOGETHERCare smartphone application (app) to collect observer-reported outcomes regarding the cancer patient's health and caregiver's perceptions of their own mental and physical health, and to provide tips and resources for self-care and patient care.

Trends and Risk Factors for Venous Thromboembolism Among Hospitalized Medical Patients.

Importance: While hospital-associated venous thromboembolism (HA-VTE) is a known complication of hospitalization, contemporary incidence and outcomes data are scarce and methodologically contested.

Objective: To define and validate an automated electronic health record (EHR)-based algorithm for retrospective detection of HA-VTE and examine contemporary HA-VTE incidence, previously reported risk factors, and outcomes.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This cohort study was conducted using hospital admissions between January 1, 2013, and June 30, 2021, with follow-up until December 31, 2021.

Insights into the non-covalent interactions of hydrogen sulfide with fenchol and fenchone from a gas-phase rotational study.

The gas-phase non-covalent interactions in the -fenchol-HS and fenchone-HS complexes have been unveiled using rotational spectroscopy in a supersonic jet expansion and quantum chemical calculations. In -fenchol, the hydrogen bond HSH⋯OH together with dispersive interactions stabilizes the system. In fenchone, the weak interaction HSH⋯OC allows an internal dynamic of HS.

Improving Time to Molecular Testing Results in Patients With Newly Diagnosed, Metastatic Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer.

Purpose: Next-generation sequencing (NGS) is a crucial component of evaluation of patients with newly diagnosed metastatic non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) to determine appropriate first-line treatment. This quality improvement project aimed to reduce time to NGS results in patients with metastatic NSCLC.

Methods: We reviewed electronic medical records of patients with newly diagnosed, untreated metastatic NSCLC from December 2018 to August 2021 and determined the number of days from pathologic diagnosis to NGS results.

Telehealth for Preoperative Evaluation of Patients With Breast Cancer During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic drove rapid, widespread adoption of telehealth (TH). We evaluated surgical telehealth utilization and outcomes for newly diagnosed breast cancer patients during the initial pandemic period. Methods We identified patients with breast cancer diagnosed March 17, 2020 through May 17, 2020 who underwent surgery as the initial treatment.

Purpose: The COVID-19 pandemic created an imperative to re-examine the role of telehealth in oncology. We studied trends and disparities in utilization of telehealth (video and telephone visits) and secure messaging (SM; ie, e-mail via portal/app), before and during the pandemic.

Purposes: To delineate operational changes in Kaiser Permanente Northern California breast care and evaluate the impact of these changes during the initial COVID-19 Shelter-in-Place period (SiP, 3/17/20-5/17/20).

Methods: By extracting data from institutional databases and reviewing electronic medical charts, we compared clinical and treatment characteristics of breast cancer patients diagnosed 3/17/20-5/17/20 to those diagnosed 3/17/19-5/17/2019. Outcomes included time from biopsy to consultation and treatment.

Attitudes and Perceptions of Multidisciplinary Cancer Care Clinicians Toward Telehealth and Secure Messages.

Importance: Telehealth use including secure messages has rapidly expanded since the COVID-19 pandemic, including for multidisciplinary aspects of cancer care. Recent reports described rapid uptake and various benefits for patients and clinicians, suggesting that telehealth may be in standard use after the pandemic.
