The role of iron dyshomeostasis in neurodegenerative disease has implicated the involvement of genes that regulate brain iron. The homeostatic iron regulatory gene (HFE) has been at the forefront of these studies given the role of the H63D variant (H67D in mice) in increasing brain iron load. Despite iron's role in oxidative stress production, H67D mice have shown robust protection against neurotoxins and improved recovery from intracerebral hemorrhage.

Adequate and timely delivery of iron is essential for brain development. The uptake of transferrin-bound (Tf) iron into the brain peaks at the time of myelination, whereas the recently discovered H-ferritin (FTH1) transport of iron into the brain continues to increase beyond the peak in myelination. Here, we interrogate the impact of dietary iron deficiency (ID) on the uptake of FTH1- and Tf-bound iron.

Preconception health has always been about preventative health care, ensuring the overall wellbeing of people of reproductive age before they have children. However, just as public health and health care have shifted to prioritize equity and include ideas about how social determinants of health influence health outcomes, the field of preconception health has experienced a similar transition. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the evolution of preconception health in the United States after 2005, highlighting the key tensions that have shaped the field.

Purpose: Iron plays a crucial role in various biological mechanisms and has been found to promote tumor growth. Recent research has shown that the H-ferritin (FTH1) protein, traditionally recognized as an essential iron storage protein, can transport iron to GBM cancer stem cells, reducing their invasion activity. Moreover, the binding of extracellular FTH1 to human GBM tissues, and brain iron delivery in general, has been found to have a sex bias.

Background: Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is characterized by bleeding into the brain parenchyma. During an ICH, iron released from the breakdown of hemoglobin creates a cytotoxic environment in the brain through increased oxidative stress. Interestingly, the loss of iron homeostasis is associated with the pathological process of other neurological diseases.

A transformative approach to maternal health promotion should be mother-centred, context-driven and grounded in lived experiences. Health promotion can achieve this by drawing on its disciplinary roots to extend and reorient maternal health promotion towards an approach of non-stigmatizing and equitable health promotion that has mothers' well-being at the centre, particularly giving credit to marginalized, 'non-normative' maternities. This article draws on data from 18 workshops EN conducted across Aotearoa New Zealand, including 268 maternal health stakeholders.

Perinatal services are being challenged to acknowledge that not all pregnant and birthing people are women and to ensure the design and delivery of services that are inclusive of, and deliver equitable outcomes for, trans, non-binary, and other gender diverse people. This is posing unique challenges for midwifery with its women-centred philosophy and professional frameworks. This paper presents the critical reflections of midwifery educators located in two midwifery programmes in Aotearoa and Ontario Canada, who are engaged in taking up the challenge of trans and non-binary inclusion in their local contexts.

Improving equity in women's health requires gender-specific and empowering approaches. However, health programs often disempower women by adopting a 'one-size-fits-all' approach that emphasizes diet, exercise and weight loss over other important aspects like sleep and mental wellbeing. This article reports on the design of Next Level Health (NLH), a program that aims to empower women through developing a wide range of health behaviors to support their holistic wellbeing.

Achieving women's health equity and empowerment is a global priority. In a Western context, women are often disempowered by the value society places on body size, shape or weight, which can create a barrier to health. Health promotion programs can exacerbate women's preoccupations with their bodies by focusing outcomes toward achieving an "ideal" body size.
