Background: Mediterranean spotted fever (MSF) is an emerging tick-borne disease caused by subsp. primarily prevalent in Mediterranean and Southern Europe. We aimed to evaluate MSF seroprevalence and risk factors in non-endemic rural areas of Romania.

We aimed to assess the changes in serum glucose levels associated with the first episode of AP, as well as the impact of dysglycemia on outcomes such as the severity of inflammation, the length of hospitalization, mortality, and the persistence of hyperglycemia at follow-up. : All patients experiencing their first episode of AP, who presented to the Emergency Room (ER) between 1 January 2020 and 31 December 2023, were retrospectively included.

Dynamics of serum cross-neutralization capacity against SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant in convalescent COVID-19 patients.

The magnitude and breadth of the neutralizing antibody response against variants of concern following natural infection would provide valuable insights regarding the immune response induced by severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) infection. Herein, 25 patients were followed at 30 ±7 (Visit 1), 90± 15 (Visit 2), and 180 ± 15 (Visit 3) days post symptom onset (PSO). The neutralization titers against both Wuhan-Hu-1 (WT) and Delta variant were analyzed in parallel along with anti-Spike antibodies (anti-S1/S2 immunoglobulin G [IgG]).

The aberrant right gastric vein (ARGV) is a rare anatomical variation. It can be responsible for unexplained hyperdensities in the hepatic parenchyma on CT scans, also known as third inflow effects. We present two cases sharing similar vascular pattern and slightly different imagistic findings on ultrasound and computer-tomography performed studies.

Background: Molecular defects in the gene including deletions, duplications or pathogenic point mutations are responsible for well-known pathologies involving short stature as a clinical manifestation: Léri-Weill dyschondrosteosis, Langer mesomelic dysplasia, Turner syndrome or idiopathic short stature. Adjuvant Use of PlasmaJet Device During Cytoreductive Surgery for Advanced-Stage Ovarian Cancer: Results of the PlaComOv-study, a Randomized Controlled Trial in The Netherlands.

Objective: Standard surgical treatment of advanced-stage ovarian carcinoma with electrosurgery cannot always result in complete cytoreductive surgery (CRS), especially when many small metastases are found on the mesentery and intestinal surface. We investigated whether adjuvant use of a neutral argon plasma device can help increase the complete cytoreduction rate.

Patients And Methods: 327 patients with FIGO stage IIIB-IV epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) who underwent primary or interval CRS were randomized to either surgery with neutral argon plasma (PlasmaJet) (intervention) or without PlasmaJet (control group).

The Impact of Tocilizumab on Radiological Changes Assessed by Quantitative Chest CT in Severe COVID-19 Patients.

(1) Background: We aimed to analyze the characteristics associated with the in-hospital mortality, describe the early CT changes expressed quantitatively after tocilizumab (TOC), and assess TOC timing according to the oxygen demands. (2) Methods: We retrospectively studied 101 adult patients with severe COVID-19, who received TOC and dexamethasone. The lung involvement was assessed quantitatively using native CT examination before and 7−10 days after TOC administration.

Surface Fatigue Behavior of a WC/aC:H Thin-Film and the Tribochemical Impact of Zinc Dialkyldithiophosphate.

In wind turbine gearboxes, (near-)surface initiated fatigue is attributed to be the primary failure mechanism. In this work, the surface fatigue of a hydrogenated tungsten carbide/amorphous carbon (WC/aC:H) thin-film was tested under severe cyclic tribo-contact using polyalphaolefin (PAO) and PAO + zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP) lubricants. The film was characterized in terms of its structure and chemistry using X-ray diffraction, analytical transmission electron microscopy, including electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), as well as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

Endoscopic Treatment of Benign Esophageal Fistulas Using Fully-covered Metallic Esophageal Stents.

Unlabelled: Non-malignant esophageal fistulas have a wide spectrum of clinical and pathological features and it`s important to learn to detect and treat them, due to significant morbidity, mortality and costs. The need for minimally invasive, efficient and also quick procedures is imperative. Esophageal stenting using fully-covered expandable stents has become an increasingly preferred option and addresses to fistulas which arise from 2-3 cm beyond Killian's mouth and up to the gastroesophageal junction.

Microstructure of Mo/Si multilayers with B4C diffusion barrier layers.

The growth behavior of B(4)C interlayers deposited at the interfaces of Mo/Si multilayers was investigated using x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, x-ray reflectivity, and x-ray diffraction measurements. We report an asymmetry in the formation of B(4)C at the B(4)C-on-Mo interface compared to the B(4)C-on-Si interface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) depth profiling shows that for B(4)C-on-Mo the formed stoichiometry is close to expectation (4:1 ratio), while for B(4)C-on-Si it is observed that carbon diffuses from the B(4)C interfaces into the multilayer, resulting in nonstochiometric growth (>4:1).

Although the idea may be valuable, we doubt that it is supported by sufficient evidence and critically discuss some of the arguments raised by the authors in favour of their new idea.

Low rates of seroconversion after hepatitis B vaccination in orphanges with high prevalence of virus carriers.

A serosurvey of Hepatitis B infection markers was conducted in two orphanages that adhered to Hepatitis B vaccination policy. In spite of comparable sizes (80-90 children per facility), housing conditions and infection control practices, the level of HbsAg endemicity was different in each unit in direct relation with the mean age of the children. The prevalence of HbsAg carriers and the interval spent in collectivity strongly affect the seroconversion rate after HB vaccination.

Assessment of the anti-hepatitis B vaccination efficacy in high risk children.

In October 1995, The Ministry of Health has initiated the national immunization program of newborns against hepatitis B. Owing to the frequency of asymptomatic Hepatitis B clinical forms in children, as well as the deficiencies in the surveillance system, the assessment of the vaccination efficacy can be performed objectively only by the detection of the prevalence of anti HBs antibodies in children to whom the complete three doses of immunization schedule have been administered (at 0, 2 and 6 months of age). We report in this study the results of a seroprevalence research carried out on a group of 272 children from orphanages who have been vaccinated.

Herpesvirus-like DNA sequences in classic Kaposi's sarcomas.

Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) accounts for more than 15% of AIDS-related malignancies. The etiology of KS is unresolved but is postulated to be multifactorial, involving viruses and overexpression of cellular growth factors and/or oncogenes. Recently, herpesvirus-like sequences (KSHV) were identified with high prevalence in AIDS-KS (AKS), endemic KS, and in classic KS biopsies (CKS).

Occurrence of human papillomavirus and p53 gene mutations in Kaposi's sarcoma.

Epidemiological evidence indicates that a sexually transmitted agent might be involved in the etiopathogenesis of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS). The prevalence of human papillomaviruses (HPV) in KS has been the focus of several investigations that have reported conflicting data. In addition, mutations of the p53 gene, which are the most frequent genetic changes found in human tumors, are absent in HPV-positive cervical carcinomas leading to the hypothesis that the function of p53 in HPV-positive tumors is inactivated through binding to the E6 viral gene product.

AIDS in Romania.

Of the 1446 AIDS cases reported in Romania, 79% were in the pediatric age group. Of these children, 28% lived with their families, 30% were orphans, and 42% were abandoned. Among the AIDS-affected children, 32% were less than 1 year old and 67% were 1-4 years old.
