Neuropsychological longitudinal study of patients with low-grade gliomas: Cognitive impairment.

This study is part of a longitudinal research program, in which patients diagnosed with low-grade gliomas (LGG:  = 13), as well as healthy controls ( = 13), were consecutively recruited and neuropsychologically followed for 7 years. The patients are followed up regardless of variations in treatment. A composite score is used (Global Deficit Score: GDS) included cognitive measures where at least five patients had a negative change: information processing speed, speed of naming, construction ability, verbal fluency, non-verbal thinking, and immediate non-verbal memory.

A life put on hold: adolescents' experiences of having an eating disorder in relation to social contexts outside the family.

Background: As suffering from an eating disorder often entails restrictions on a person's everyday life, one can imagine that it is an important aspect of recovery to help young people learn to balance stressful demands and expectations in areas like the school environment and spare-time activities that include different forms of interpersonal relationships.

Purpose: The aim of the present study was to investigate how adolescents with experience from a restrictive eating disorder describe their illness and their time in treatment in relation to social contexts outside the family.

Patients And Methods: This qualitative study is based on narratives of 15 adolescents with experience from outpatient treatment for eating disorders with a predominately restrictive symptomatology, recruited in collaboration with four specialized eating-disorder units.

Ultrasound-guided intravenous access in adults using SonoStik, a novel encapsulated sterile guidewire: A prospective cohort trial.

Purpose: We evaluated the performance of an encapsulated guidewire designed for single-handed use with ultrasound-guided vascular access (SonoStik) with Seldinger technique, as compared with conventional intravenous catheters placed under ultrasound guidance in healthy subjects.

Methods: This is a prospective cohort trial in healthy subjects in which each subject served as his/her own control by having a SonoStik ultrasound intravenous cannulation placed in one arm and a conventionally placed, standard ultrasound intravenous cannulation placed in the other arm. The basilic vein was used because it is a non-visible and non-palpable vein.

Adding "Circle of Security - Parenting" to treatment as usual in three Swedish infant mental health clinics. Effects on parents' internal representations and quality of parent-infant interaction.

This study presents effects of adding Circle of Security-Parenting (COS-P) to an already established comprehensive therapeutic model for early parent-child intervention in three Swedish infant mental health (IMH) clinics. Parents' internal representations and quality of parent-infant interaction were studied in a clinical sample comprised of 52 parent-infant dyads randomly allocated to two comparable groups. One group consisted of 28 dyads receiving treatment as usual (TAU) supplemented with COS-P in a small group format, and another group of 24 dyads receiving TAU only.

Being me and being us - adolescents' experiences of treatment for eating disorders.

Background: This qualitative study addresses adolescents' perception of treatment for eating disorders. The importance of involving parents in treatment of young people with eating disorders, especially young people with Anorexia Nervosa, is emphasized in a number of studies. Even so, this form of treatment does not work for everybody, not even within a limited diagnostic group.

Parents' assessment of parent-child interaction interventions--a longitudinal study in 101 families.

Background: The aim of the study was to describe families with small children who participated in parent-child interaction interventions at four centres in Sweden, and to examine long term and short term changes regarding the parents' experience of parental stress, parental attachment patterns, the parents' mental health and life satisfaction, the parents' social support and the children's problems.

Methods: In this longitudinal study a consecutive sample of 101 families (94 mothers and 54 fathers) with 118 children (median age 3 years) was assessed, using self-reports, at the outset of the treatment (T1), six months later (T2) and 18 months after the beginning of treatment (T3). Analysis of the observed differences was carried out using Wilcoxon's Signed-Rank test and Cohen's d.

[Oral hygiene with tongue cleaners].

The investigation presented here is part of a series of studies on oral hygiene that deal with a very common problem occurring in everyday practice. Two different methods of mouth cleaning were tested in a comparative study on 150 subjects. At least in German-speaking countries, our methodology was groundbreaking in that measuring tools for evaluation of the oral hygiene measures implemented had not been available thus far.

The protective effects on wound edges of a new preparation.

Marked progress has been made in the management of chronic wounds in recent years. However, every attempt to protect the wound edges has been unsatisfactory and in many cases the products used were not developed for the purpose of skin protection.

Objective: This study investigated the effect of Cavilon No Sting Barrier Film (NSBF) (3M Healthcare) on erythema on the edges of highly exuding wounds in patients with venous stasis ulcers.

Method: An intra-individual double-blind randomised test was performed on 239 patients. The two sides of each wound on each patient were treated with two different dressings: Cavilon NSBF was applied to the wound edges of one side and a control (water) to the edges of the other.

[Current aspects of the therapy of chronic wounds].

The therapy of chronic lesions is a matter of debate among both physicians and nursing personnel. Often very different therapeutic approaches are conceivable, which contradict each other to some extent, but which must in any case be prescribed by a physician who is responsible for them. However, carrying out the therapy is often the task of the nursing personnel, who therefore stand in need of thorough information concerning the therapeutic considerations in order to realize these adequately.

Economic evaluation of the treatment of chronic wounds: hydroactive wound dressings in combination with enzymatic ointment versus gauze dressings in patients with pressure ulcer and venous leg ulcer in Germany.

Objective: The treatment costs for pressure ulcers and venous leg ulcers were estimated based on the hospital administrator's perspective in Germany.

Design: A spreadsheet model using input data from various hospitals in Germany was developed.

Interventions: Five currently used treatment strategies were analysed: gauze, impregnated gauze, calcium alginate and hydroactive wound dressing with enzymatic ointment.

[Effects of soft bedding on body perception and posture].

This investigation in several hospitals of the Federal Republic of Germany attempts for the first time to demonstrate the effects of soft bedding on the patients' condition on hand of well known and in other disciplines well established criteria. It could be shown that the softness of the mattress causes considerable problems for the patient. Furthermore, it becomes clear that the extent of nursing increases markedly with a very soft bedding of the patient in order to compensate for the disadvantages arising from it.
