Plasma concentrations of sodium cromoglycate given by nebulisation and metered dose inhalers in patients with exercise-induced asthma: relationship to protective effect.

Plasma sodium cromoglycate (SCG) concentrations were measured in 11 patients at regular intervals before and after exercise in a double-blind study to assess the protective effect in exercise-induced asthma (EIA) of 2, 10 and 20 mg SCG aerosol and placebo, and (on an open basis) nebulised SCG (10 g l-1). There was a dose related increase in plasma concentration and AUC (0-1 h) with the aerosol formulations; values with nebulised SCG were significantly higher than with any aerosol dose. Protection from EIA increased to a maximum of 66% at plasma concentrations of 4 ng ml-1 and above.

Antimicrobial effects of a macrophage-derived cytotoxin from the serum of BCG-primed rabbits (tumour necrosis serum).

Previous studies have shown that a macrophage-derived cytotoxin, found in high titre in the serum of BCG-primed rabbits, killed malarial parasites and certain tumour cells. In this study, the macrophage cytotoxin was tested for activity against microorganisms other than protozoa. No activity was seen against a range of gram-negative or gram-positive bacteria or against Candida albicans.

A bivariate path analysis of fear data on twins and their parents.

A simple path model applicable to twins and their parents and involving both cultural and genetic transmission in the presence of phenotypic assortative mating was extended to cover the bivariate case. The model allows for cross assortative mating as well as cross cultural transmission. It was applied to two correlated measures derived from a fear survey questionnaire given to 1000 subjects.

Metabolism and clearance of proxicromil--studies in rat, hamster, rabbit, dog, squirrel monkey, cynomolgus monkey, baboon and man.

Proxicromil was extensively metabolized and eliminated as metabolites in urine and faeces by the rat, hamster, rabbit, squirrel monkey, cynomolgus monkey, baboon and man after oral administration. The pathway of metabolism in these species was by hydroxylation of the alicyclic ring principally to yield monohydroxylated metabolites with trace amounts of a dihydroxylated product. Elimination of proxicromil by the dog, however, was essentially as the unchanged drug.

Antimicrobial properties of preterm breast milk cells.

The antimicrobial properties of preterm and term breast milk cells were compared. They were similar in cell numbers and in the capacity to phagocytose and kill staphylococci. Interferon production on endotoxin challenge appeared to be higher in preterm cells.

Definition of conditions that enable antigen-specific activation of the majority of isolated trinitrophenol-binding B cells.

In an effort to further elucidate the early cellular events in generation of antibody responses, we have determined the requirements for antigen-specific initiation of the G0 to G1 transition by isolated trinitrophenol (TNP) -binding B lymphocytes. TNP-binding cells were isolated from normal B6D2F1 splenocyte populations using hapten affinity fractionation on disulfide-bonded TNP-gelatin-coated plates. Populations prepared in this way are greater than or equal to 96% immunoglobulin positive and 70-95% antigen binding.

Isolation and characterization of BALB/c lymphocytes specific for phosphorylcholine is described. The isolation protocol utilizes phosphorylcholine coupled to gelatin coated plates via the cleavable crosslinking reagent N-succinimidyl 3-(2-pyridyldiothio)propionate (SPDP). The procedure is rapid, requiring only 1-2 h and conducted entirely at 0-4 degrees C.

This study assessed the effects of a flexible work schedule ("flextime") on time allocated to children and spouse by federal workers. Direct behavioral observations of family, home, and work functions were precluded because of the cost involved in observing many people for long periods of time. In order to obtain detailed individual data, participants completed hour-by-hour activity logs a mean of twice per week for 35 weeks.

Induction of anti-phosphorylcholine responses in vitro using phosphorylcholine derivatized sheep erythrocytes (SRBC) is described. These responses are thymus dependent and restricted to expression of the TEPC 15 idiotype. Optimal B-cell concentrations in cultures were shown to be different for elicitation of direct anti-PC PFC responses than for elicitation of PFC specific for carrier (SRBC) determinants.

Effects of self-monitoring and feedback on residential electricity consumption.

Prior research has indicated that frequent feedback could reduce residential electricity consumption by 10% to 15%. However, because feedback was primarily given in written form, this procedure might not be practical. The present study evaluated a potentially more practical feedback procedure during peak-use periods with high electricity consuming households.

Issues in multivariate assessment of a large-scale behavioral program.

Several social and research issues directly affected the development and implementation of multivariate assessment in a large community-based applied research program. Examples are drawn from experiences of the Preparation through Responsive Educational Programs Project for disruptive and skill deficient adolescents in suburban, rural, and urban junior high school settings, focusing on the assessment of academic and social skill development and long-term skill maintenance. The social context altered both project treatment and follow-up plans, requiring assessment of potentially unintended effects and decreasing consistency across sites.

The influence of penicillin on experimental wound contamination with staphylococci: studies with chromic catgut and monofilament nylon closure.

This study examines the ability of penicillin to eradicate or modify the pattern of infection in experimental wounds contaminated with Staphylococcus pyrogenes in the presence of chromic catgut or monofilament nylon suture. Penicillin therapy initiated within 4 days of the onset of infection was successful in eradicating infection when compared with untreated controls (P less than 0-01). Infection was modified but not eradicated in penicillin was administered from the seventh day.
