Objective: To analyze the relationship between glycemic control after renal transplantation and subsequent graft function and complications.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective chart review of 202 consecutive patients undergoing kidney transplantation to analyze the association between perioperative and chronic glycemic control and clinical outcomes of rejection, infection, and hospital readmission during the first year after kidney transplantation.
Results: Mean in-hospital blood glucose (BG) was 157 ± 34.
Objectives: To examine whether (1) serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level (25[OH]D) is a risk factor for hyperglycemia, as assessed by glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), in African American men (AAM) and (2) 25(OH)D is a predictor of HbA1c in AAM and Caucasian American men (CAM).
Methods: We prospectively assessed 25(OH)D and HbA1c in 1,074 men, outpatients with and without diabetes, at an urban Veteran Administration Medical Center (66.8% AAM, 26.
Background: Early life trauma is an important risk factor for many psychiatric and somatic disorders in adulthood. As a growing body of evidence suggests that brain plasticity is disturbed in affective disorders, we examined the short-term and remote effects of early life stress on different forms of brain plasticity.
Methodology/principal Findings: Mice were subjected to early deprivation by individually separating pups from their dam in the first two weeks after birth.
A new acrylic anion exchanger with both tertiary and quaternary ammonium as well as ketone groups in the structural unit has been prepared by the nucleophilic substitution reaction of aminolyzed vinylacetate:acrylonitrile:divinylbenzene copolymer of porosity structure in the swelling state with 2-chloroacetone as a halogenated compound. The new compound exhibits better qualities of strong base exchange capacity than the weak base anion exchangers. The obtained acrylic anion exchanger was used to remove Cr(VI) from the aqueous solution.

Particular attention was paid to individual differences in the susceptibility to LPO and its possible relationship with freezeability. Innate levels of LPO were low in fresh spermatozoa but increased after thawing in one of the dogs included in our study.

New quaternized crosslinked poly(4-vinylpyridines) prepared by nucleophilic substitution reactions of 4-vinylpyridine: divinylbenzene copolymers of gel and porous structure with halogenated compounds such as benzyl chloride and 2-chloracetone, were used to remove Cr(VI) from the aqueous solution. Batch adsorption studies were carried out to determine the effect of the initial concentration of Cr(VI), pH, temperature and the presence of sulfate anions. The process was found to be pH and concentration dependent.

Sperm membrane integrity using flow cytometry and motility using a computerized system were evaluated in each experimental group. The Uppsala extender was superior in all aspects of sperm function.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFTwo acrylic adsorbents with different morphological structures and bearing amidoethylenamine and thiol groups were obtained and used for platinum sorption from chloride solution by the batch method. Physico-chemical parameters that influence adsorption such as initial Pt(IV) concentration, stirring time, pH, and adsorbent amount were investigated. The thermodynamic parameters of Pt(IV) sorption on the synthesized adsorbent were also evaluated based on Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms.

New pyridine strong base anion exchange resin has been prepared by the nucleophilic substitution reaction of 4-vinylpyridine:divinylbenzene copolymer of gel structure with 2-chloroacetamide as halogenated compound. The resulting resin was used to remove Cr(VI) from the aqueous solution. Batch adsorption studies have been carried out to determine the effect of the initial concentration of Cr(VI), adsorbent dose, pH, temperature and the presence of sulfate anions as counter ions.

The pharmacological properties (toxicity and antitumor activity against W256 carcinosarcoma and L1210 leukemia) of thirty five new triazenes derived both from amides and esters of 3-methyl-4-amino-benzoic acid and from aromatic dipeptidic esters were investigated. The new compounds proved to be moderately effective against W256 carcinosarcoma and totally devoid of activity against L1210 leukemia, except for ethyl,4-(3,3-dimethyltriazenophenyl)-N-alpha-(9-fluorenyl)-acetyl-L-alanine ester which exhibited borderline activity against this leukemia. The pharmacological data thus obtained were correlated with the physico-chemical parameters of the new triazenes in a quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR approach).

The causes of urinary retention are analysed, the drainage technique as well as the mechanisms eliminating the above-mentioned complications are described.
