Introduction: Aviation safety sensitive personnel (SSP) function in highly complex environments. SSP mental health is thought to support safety, efficiency, and overall health. Research is needed to identify how to optimize and screen mental health across aviation SSP, but no consensus exists on the research priorities that need to be met.

Global viewpoints: proposals for the development of endourology in resource-limited countries in Africa.

Endourology plays an important role in modern urological practice. Compared to open surgery, it offers many advantages. In Africa, endourology is not widely practiced or non-existent in some referral centres.

Anterior dislocation of the shoulder associated with a diaphyseal fracture of the ipsilateral humerus: a case report.

Background: Anterior dislocation of the shoulder associated with a diaphyseal fracture of the ipsilateral humerus is a rare and controversial occurrence, with very few cases reported in the literature.

Case Presentation: We present a case of a 39-year-old right-handed driver who presented with an anterior dislocation of the shoulder associated with a diaphyseal fracture of the ipsilateral humerus following a road traffic accident. The lateral approach to the fracture allowed us to use two forceps to gain a good grip on the proximal fragment and perform the maneuver to reduce the dislocation.

Place of urolithiasis in the spectrum of urological pathologies, practices and use of endourological procedures in the management of calculi of the upper urinary tract: results of a survey of referral centres in Africa.

Our aim was to determine the current trend of endourology in the management of upper urinary tract calculi in Africa reference centres. We conducted an online multiple-choice questionnaire survey involving 46 centres from 27 countries using a structured well-designed Google Form (®) questionnaire. The questionnaires were distributed to the head of service through their emails.

Patients And Method: This is a retrospective, descriptive, single-center study, collecting the records of patients followed for VVF between January 2014 and December 2019 at the Urology and Andrology Department of the Centre hospitalier universitaire Aristide Le Dantec, Dakar, Senegal. The following parameters were studied: age, geographical origin, parity, and etiology of VVF.

Validation of the point-of-care (POC) technologies Xpert HIV-1 Qual and m-PIMA HIV 1/2 detect for early diagnosis of HIV-1 and HIV-2 in Senegal.

Introduction: early infant diagnosis (EID) is crucial in the prevention of mother to child transmission (PMTCT) of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and is an essential component for the elimination of HIV. EID can be strengthened in resource-limited countries by the introduction and the roll out of real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technologies via point-of-care (POC) devices which improves treatment in remote areas and reduces turnaround time for clinicians and patients to receive results and linkage to care. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of Xpert® HIV-1 Qual Assay (Cepheid) and m-PIMA™ HIV 1/2 Detect (ABBOTT) for EID of HIV-1 and HIV-2.

Elbow dislocations are very common, particularly in the posterolateral variety. Closed reduction is usually easy. However, an irreducible elbow dislocation without associated fracture is rare.

Performance of Xpert HIV-1 viral load test in Senegal: a country of high circulation of CRF02_AG.

Introduction: the introduction of the point-of-care in HIV-1 viral load quantification appears to be a complementary strategy to the existing conventional system of the acceleration plan for the achievement of the three 90s in Senegal. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of the Xpert® HIV-1 viral load in the context of circulation of non-B, non-C subtypes.

Methods: two hundred samples, were tested on Xpert® HIV-1 Viral Load using 1 ml of plasma in comparison to 600 μl on Abbott Real-time HIV-1 assay.

Total penile glans amputation following circumcision: A case report of a dramatic complication.

Circumcision is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures. As traditional ritual circumcisions are still practiced in the community, in Senegal the majority of circumcisions are performed in hospitals. We report the case of a 9-year-old boy who underwent a total amputation of the glans after a circumcision in a pharmacy by an unqualified agent.

This paper presents the design of NaviPBx, an ultrasound-navigated prostate cancer biopsy system. NaviPBx is designed to support an affordable and sustainable national healthcare program in Senegal. It uses spatiotemporal navigation and multiparametric transrectal ultrasound to guide biopsies.

Giant bladder diverticulum in a postmenopausal woman: Case report and literature review.

Bladder diverticulum represents a herniation of the bladder mucosa and submucosa through a point of weakness in the detrusor muscle. Bladder diverticula are rare and most often described in men. We report a symptomatic giant bladder diverticulum in a 56-year-old postmenopausal woman.

Integrin receptors for the extracellular matrix play critical roles at all stages of carcinogenesis, including tumor growth, tumor progression and metastasis. The laminin-binding integrin α3β1 is expressed in all epithelial tissues where it has important roles in cell survival, migration, proliferation, and gene expression programs during normal and pathological tissue remodeling. α3β1 signaling and adhesion functions promote tumor growth and metastasis in a number of different types of cancer cells.

Hydroxychloroquine and Azithromycin Treatment of Hospitalized Patients Infected with SARS-CoV-2 in Senegal from March to October 2020.

As of today, little data is available on COVID-19 in African countries, where the case management relied mainly on a treatment by association between hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) and azithromycin (AZM). This study aimed to understand the main clinical outcomes of COVID-19 hospitalized patients in Senegal from March to October 20202. We described the clinical characteristics of patients and analysed clinical status (alive and discharged versus hospitalized or died) at 15 days after Isolation and Treatment Centres (ITC) admission among adult patients who received HCQ plus AZM and those who did not receive this combination.

Post-abortive vesicovaginal fistula associated with bladder lithiasis: About an observation.

Illegally induced abortions remain a significant public health issue in developing countries. We report a case that was complicated by a vesicovaginal fistula with intravesical calcification of the piece of wood used to perform the illegal abortion. A -vesical approach allowed extraction of the calcified foreign body and closure of the vesicovaginal fistula.

[Outcomes of radical prostatectomy in patients with prostate cancer at the Aristide Le Dantec University Hospital].

The purpose of this study was to assess outcomes of radical prostatectomy in patients with prostate cancer. We conducted a retrospective single-center study in the Department of Urology and Andrology at the Aristide Le Dantec Hospital in Dakar from June 1, 2010 to May 31, 2016. We collected data of 60 patients undergoing radical retropubic prostatectomy associated with dissection of the iliac and obturator nodes.

Integrin α3β1 Promotes Invasive and Metastatic Properties of Breast Cancer Cells through Induction of the Brn-2 Transcription Factor.

In the current study, we demonstrate that integrin α3β1 promotes invasive and metastatic traits of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells through induction of the transcription factor, Brain-2 (Brn-2). We show that RNAi-mediated suppression of α3β1 in MDA-MB-231 cells caused reduced expression of Brn-2 mRNA and protein and reduced activity of the gene promoter. In addition, RNAi-targeting of Brn-2 in MDA-MB-231 cells decreased invasion in vitro and lung colonization in vivo, and exogenous Brn-2 expression partially restored invasion to cells in which α3β1 was suppressed.

Paradoxical Role for Wild-Type p53 in Driving Therapy Resistance in Melanoma.

Metastatic melanoma is an aggressive disease, despite recent improvements in therapy. Eradicating all melanoma cells even in drug-sensitive tumors is unsuccessful in patients because a subset of cells can transition to a slow-cycling state, rendering them resistant to most targeted therapy. It is still unclear what pathways define these subpopulations and promote this resistant phenotype.
