Introduction: Well-functioning National Immunization Technical Advisory Groups (NITAGs) are valuable contributors to decision-making processes in the complex immunization policy arena. This paper describes the progress made globally on the establishment and strengthening of these key advisory groups and discusses some of their strengths, challenges, and opportunities.

Methods: The data submitted annually by countries to the World Health Organization (WHO) via the WHO/UNICEF Joint Reporting Form (JRF) were analyzed, comparing the NITAG functionality criteria in 2012 and 2023.

Article Synopsis
  • - Neuraminidase (NA) is a key glycoprotein in the influenza virus that aids in replication, yet existing vaccines mainly target hemagglutinin (HA) instead of NA despite evidence linking NA antibodies to disease resistance.
  • - Research showed that recombinant NA (rNA) is effective in eliciting immune responses in naïve mice and ferrets, even among those with existing immunity.
  • - When rNA was added to a traditional HA-based vaccine, it significantly enhanced NA-specific immune responses in ferrets without compromising HA-specific immunity, suggesting a potential improvement in vaccine effectiveness.

Article Synopsis
  • Adolescents in low- and middle-income countries, particularly in Senegal, face significant challenges regarding sexual and reproductive health and are at risk of experiencing gender-based violence (GBV).
  • A study was conducted involving health professionals and community health workers in three Senegalese communities to assess their knowledge and practices related to sexual and reproductive health services and GBV.
  • Results indicated that over half of the health personnel had good knowledge of relevant policies and protocols, and factors like training in gender issues and specific health services were associated with this knowledge and their ability to provide better care.

Background: An innovative version of the sterile insect technique (SIT) for pest control, called boosted SIT, relies on the use of sterile males coated with a biocide to control a target wild pest population of the same species. The objective of the present study was to assess the relevance of such technology to control the fruit fly Bactrocera dorsalis and fruit losses in mango orchards using. An agent-based simulation model named BOOSTIT was used to explore the reduction of fruit losses thank to sterile male fruit flies control and economic benefits according to different strategies of sterile male release.

As dozens of new National Immunization Technical Advisory Groups (NITAGs) were established worldwide in the past decade, and as existing NITAGs continued to play an important role in vaccine policy, global NITAG partners recognized a need for a standardized assessment tool to evaluate and strengthen their functions. This article describes the development of the NITAG Maturity Assessment Tool (NMAT), a stepwise evaluation tool that assesses NITAGs on seven key indicators of structure and process. A draft tool was developed through an iterative, consensus-based process with an expert working group before it was piloted with an economically and geographically diverse convenience sample of NITAGs.

Article Synopsis
  • The importance of evidence-informed decision-making (EIDM) for National Immunization Technical Advisory Groups (NITAGs) is emphasized through new vaccines and global immunization programs aimed at preventing infectious diseases.
  • The CDC and Task Force for Global Health (TFGH) have introduced tools like a toolkit for training NITAGs on the Evidence to Recommendations (EtR) approach and an eLearning module for members, significantly aiding Ministries of Health (MoH) in vaccine policy decisions.
  • The NITAG Maturity Assessment Tool (NMAT) assesses NITAG capabilities across seven areas, and lessons learned from training across over 30 countries indicate future priorities include evaluating training impacts, adapting tools for broader use, and enhancing

Introduction: To end the COVID-19 pandemic, the WHO set a goal in 2021 to fully vaccinate 70% of the global population by mid-2022. We projected the COVID-19 vaccination trajectory in 52 African countries and compared the projected to the 'actual' or 'observed' coverage as of December 2022. We also estimated the required vaccination speed needed to have attained the WHO 70% coverage target by December 2022.

We investigate the microscopic behaviour of hydrogen-containing species formed on the surface of III-N semiconductor samples by the residual hydrogen in the analysis chamber in laser-assisted atom probe tomography (APT). We analysed AlGaN/GaN heterostructures containing alternate layers with a thickness of about 20 nm. The formation of H-containing species occurs at field strengths between 22 and 26 V/nm and is independent of the analysed samples.

According to hospital records, 5 months after reporting its first case of COVID-19, Côte d'Ivoire reported only 102 deaths. We conducted a community mortality survey in the 13 districts where 95% of COVID-19 cases were reported to assess COVID-19 mortality in nonhealthcare settings. To identify suspected COVID-19 deaths in communities, we used data from social and administrative institutions, such as police and fire departments, funeral homes, and places of worship, whose functions include providing services related to deaths.

The eradication of neonatal Group B (GBS) infections, considered as a major public health priority, necessarily requires a mastery of the data on vaginal carriage in pregnant women. The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence of vaginal carriage of GBS in pregnant women, antibiotic susceptibility, and associated risk factors. This was a cross-sectional, descriptive study conducted over a period of 9 months (July 2020 to March 2021) in pregnant women between 34 and 38 weeks of gestation (WG) followed at the Nabil Choucair health center in Dakar.

: The third round of the global pulse survey demonstrated that the abrupt and rapid progression of the COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted childhood immunization in many countries. Although Cameroon has reported over 120,000 COVID-19 cases, the reported national childhood vaccination coverage during the pandemic seems to have increased compared to that during the pre-COVID-19 period. Indeed, the first dose of the diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis-containing vaccine (DTP-1) coverage increased from 85.

Background: There is no source of data on causes of death in Senegal that covers both community and hospital deaths. Yet the death registration system in the Dakar region is relatively complete (>80%) and could be expanded to provide information on the diseases and injuries that led to death.

Methods: In this pilot study, we recorded all deaths that occurred over 2 months and were reported in the 72 civil registration offices in the Dakar region.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused drastic social changes for many people, including separation from friends and coworkers, enforced close contact with family, and reductions in mobility. Here we assess the extent to which people's evolutionarily-relevant basic motivations and goals-fundamental social motives such as Affiliation and Kin Care-might have been affected. To address this question, we gathered data on fundamental social motives in 42 countries ( = 15,915) across two waves, including 19 countries (  10,907) for which data were gathered both before and during the pandemic (pre-pandemic wave: 32 countries,  = 8998; 3302 male, 5585 female;   24.

How does psychology vary across human societies? The fundamental social motives framework adopts an evolutionary approach to capture the broad range of human social goals within a taxonomy of ancestrally recurring threats and opportunities. These motives-self-protection, disease avoidance, affiliation, status, mate acquisition, mate retention, and kin care-are high in fitness relevance and everyday salience, yet understudied cross-culturally. Here, we gathered data on these motives in 42 countries (N = 15,915) in two cross-sectional waves, including 19 countries (N = 10,907) for which data were gathered in both waves.
