Neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation (NBIA) is a genetic disorder characterized by iron accumulation in the basal ganglia. Patients may develop behavioral abnormalities, dementia, movement disorders, and neuropsychiatric symptoms such as emotional lability, depression, anxiety, hallucinations, impulsivity, obsessions, and hyperactivity. In this case, a 46-year-old male patient with a C19orf12 mutation experienced depressive complaints before movement disorders, followed by cognitive deficits and psychotic symptoms as the disease progressed.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study investigated how microRNAs might influence the effectiveness of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in treating schizophrenia, aiming to identify changes in these molecules before and after treatment.
  • - Researchers analyzed blood samples from eight patients with schizophrenia and eight healthy controls using microarray-based profiling, revealing alterations in 681 microRNAs post-ECT but failing to find significant differences in specific ones through further testing.
  • - The findings are preliminary and suggest a need for more research to understand the epigenetic mechanisms at play in ECT's therapeutic effects, as current knowledge on this topic is limited.

This study aimed to explore disordered eating behaviors in gender-affirming treatment (GAT)-seeking transgender (TG) adults and cisgender people, in addition to analyzing the association between gender dysphoria intensity, body mass index, and disordered eating behaviors. Data were collected from 132 GAT-seeking TG people with gender dysphoria who had never received GAT (91 TG men, 41 TG women), and 153 cisgender (99 cisgender men, 54 cisgender women) participants from Turkey. The Utrecht Gender Dysphoria Scale was used to evaluate the intensity of gender dysphoria.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) was the most prevalent endocrine disorder among women. Weight issues were commonly observed and found to be associated with comorbidities. This study aimed to compare Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q) scores and Night Eating Questionnaire (NEQ) scores in patients with and without PCOS and analyze the factors associated with disordered eating.

The purpose of the study was to explore the association among chronotype, seasonality, sleep quality, and night eating syndrome (NES) among patients with bipolar disorder (BD) and the mediating role of sleep quality in this relationship. Ninety-two individuals with BD type 1 who had been euthymic for at least 8 weeks and 87 healthy controls were included. In addition to sociodemographic/clinical data, chronotype, seasonality, sleep quality, and NES were evaluated using the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ), Seasonal Pattern Assessment Questionnaire, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and Night Eating Questionnaire.

Objective: Emotional dysregulation is a basic feature found in patients with bipolar disorder. It was also reported that higher alexithymia scores are a predictive factor for a decrease in social functionality. It is known that patients with bipolar disorder experience more somatic symptoms than the general population.

The aim of this study is to evaluate psychiatric comorbidity, temperament and character traits, depression and anxiety levels, and their relation with symptom severity in patients with lichen simplex chronicus (LSC). About 50 patients with LSC were enrolled in the study along with 49 controls. The Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5 (SCID-5), Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) were administered to all subjects for psychiatric assessment.

Background: Depression and anxiety levels, sexual dysfunctions, and affective temperament characteristics of women with lifelong vaginismus (LLV) and their male partners may have important effects on the development, maintenance, and exacerbation of LLV.

Aim: We aimed to investigate depression and anxiety levels, sexual dysfunctions, and affective temperament characteristics of both women with LLV and their male partners.

Methods: 56 women with LLV, their 56 male partners, and 44 couples with no complaints of any sexual function as a control group were included in this study.

Black cohosh () a popular complementary medicine, is commonly prescribed as an alternative drug to hormone replacement therapy for the treatment of menopause symptoms and menstrual pain. Studies on the black cohosh's psychological effects are generally focused on the perimenopausal depression and anxiety; and, its effects have been considered to be affiliated with its serotonergic and dopaminergic activities. We report a patient presenting with acute onset mania associated with black cohosh use, probably due to its psychopharmacological activities on serotonergic and dopaminergic receptors.

Objectives: There is positive evidence to support the role of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in the treatment of schizophrenia; however, it is unclear to what extent this growing evidence reflects the actual situation in clinical practice. The aim of this study was to explore the efficacy of ECT augmentation to antipsychotics in individuals with schizophrenia in a naturalistic-observational environment.

Methods: Eighty-one patients diagnosed with schizophrenia, hospitalised due to acute psychotic exacerbation were included in the study.

Body dissatisfaction plays an important role in the development of psychiatric problems such as eating disorders as well as gender dysphoria (GD). Cross-sex hormonal treatment (CHT) alleviates the dissatisfaction by making various changes in the body. We examined the alteration of body uneasiness, eating attitudes and behaviors, and psychological symptoms longitudinally in Turkish participants with female-to-male gender dysphoria (FtM GD) after CHT.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study assesses the safety and effectiveness of rapid clozapine titration in hospitalized patients with schizophrenia, using a retrospective cohort from two centers with differing titration rates.
  • - In the rapid titration group, patients experienced a shorter time from clozapine initiation to discharge (22.4 days) and a significantly reduced total hospital stay (29.6 days) compared to the slower titration group.
  • - Although rapid titration led to more instances of hypotension and a case of suspected myocarditis, it was overall deemed safe and effective, proving to significantly reduce the length of hospital stays for patients with treatment-refractory schizophrenia.

Treatment of severe and refractory manic episodes in hospital settings can occasionally be very difficult. In particular, severely excited patients showing aggressive, hostile, impulsive behaviours frequently require physical restraint and seclusion, high doses of antipsychotics and benzodiazepines, and sometimes, electroconvulsive therapy. Hospital stay is generally prolonged and such patients cause great emotional distress for other patients in the ward and clinical staff involved in their care.

Background: Patients suffering from obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), despite heightened levels of functional impairment and disability, often wait several years before starting pharmacological treatment. The interval between the onset of a specific psychiatric disorder and administration of the first pharmacological treatment has been conceptualized as the duration of untreated illness (DUI). The DUI has been increasingly investigated as a predictor of long-term outcomes for OCD and other anxiety disorders.
