We present the spontaneous isomerization of donor-acceptor Stenhouse adducts anchored onto a gold surface, visualized using scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Our investigation reveals a palette of molecular arrangements, including those with ferroelectric-like ordering, evolving over time into a fine pattern consisting of both open and closed forms of the photoswitch.

In this paper, we give an overview of novel main-chain azobenzene-based fluorinated poly(arylene ether)s with different content of azo groups, aiming at providing a better understanding of the link between a number of N═N bonds and the macroscopic response of the material. We discuss chemical synthesis and molecular structure and report on a comprehensive analysis of the polymer properties, thermal behavior, and mechanical strength. We show that a higher content of azobenzene moieties reduces the mechanical strength of the polymer materials.

Caged compounds comprise the group of artificially synthesized, light-sensitive molecules that enable in situ derivation of biologically active constituents capable of affecting cells, tissues and/or biological processes upon exposure to light. Ruthenium-bispyridine (RuBi) complexes are photolyzed by biologically harmless visible light. In the present study, we show that RuBi-caged nicotine can be used as a source of free nicotine to induce proliferation of A549 nonsmall-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells by acting on nicotinic acetylcholine receptors expressed in these cells.

The elastic and viscous properties of lyotropic chromonic liquid crystals have a very sharp, often exponential temperature dependence. Self-propelled bacteria swimming in this viscoelastic medium induce director deformations which can strongly influence their velocity, and we study the temperature behavior of their motility in the whole range of the nematic phase. We observe experimentally that, with increasing temperature, while the viscosity drops exponentially and the frequency of the flagellum rotation grows linearly, the swimmers' speed first conventionally increases but then, above some crossover temperature, slows down and at the same time bacteria-induced director distortions become visible.

Light-oxygen-voltage (LOV) domains are common photosensory modules that found many applications in fluorescence microscopy and optogenetics. Here, we show that the Chloroflexus aggregans LOV domain can bind different flavin species (lumichrome, LC; riboflavin, RF; flavin mononucleotide, FMN; flavin adenine dinucleotide, FAD) during heterologous expression and that its physicochemical properties depend strongly on the nature of the bound flavin. We show that whereas the dissociation constants for different chromophores are similar, the melting temperature of the protein reconstituted with single flavin species varies from ~ 60 °C for LC to ~ 81 °C for FMN, and photobleaching half-times vary almost 100-fold.

There has been strong experimental evidence that molecules of some dyes in an anisotropic solvent, nematic liquid crystal, form aggregates. We present a detailed experimental analysis of the light-induced director reorientation (DR) in a dye-doped nematic liquid crystal (known as the Jánossy effect) and a theoretical model of its strong enhancement based on the aggregates' interaction. The DR transition is found to be very different from the Frederiks effect.

In the past, LOV domain variants have been developed as fluorescent reporter proteins (called flavin-based fluorescent proteins; FbFPs), which due to their ability to fluoresce under anaerobic conditions, fast folding kinetics and a small size of ∼12-16 kDa are a promising reporter system for quantitative real-time analysis of biological processes.
