Article Synopsis
  • Pediatric Burkitt lymphoma (pBL) is a fast-growing cancer in children that requires timely diagnosis and treatment, with microRNAs (miRNAs) playing a critical role in understanding the disease's prognosis.
  • The study utilized microRNA sequencing to identify differentially expressed miRNAs in both tumor tissues and plasma from pBL patients, highlighting their potential as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers.
  • The results showed that specific circulating and tissue miRNAs were significantly higher in pBL cases, opening avenues for improved diagnostic methods and survival predictions.

Article Synopsis
  • Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) is a serious complication that can occur after solid organ transplants, particularly in pediatric liver transplant recipients.
  • A study conducted on 112 pediatric patients revealed that 43.75% developed Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) DNAemia, with 8 of these patients subsequently diagnosed with PTLD.
  • Findings showed that age at diagnosis of EBV DNAemia, as well as abnormal test results, were significantly higher in PTLD patients, indicating a correlation between older age and the development of this complication.

Aim: Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is a rare tumour comprising myeloid blasts occurring at an anatomical site other than the bone marrow. We sought to investigate both paediatric and adult patients with MS diagnosed at our institution and determine possible correlations among their clinicopathological, phenotypic, molecular and prognostic features.

Methods: This study retrospectively evaluated the data of 45 patients diagnosed with MS at Ege University Faculty of Medicine Hospital, Turkey, over a 17-year period.

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a common hematological malignancy originating from bone marrow stem cells. Chromosomal abnormalities can be seen in almost all cases, the most known anomaly being Philadelphia (Ph) chromosome, a derivative chromosome resulting from a translocation between 9. and 22.

EBV-associated lymphoproliferative disorders (LPDs) are common in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) with T-cell-depleted grafts, but are extremely rare in HSCT patients with T-cell-replete grafts with post-transplant cyclophosphamide (PTCy). Here we present the cases of two pediatric patients who developed EBV-related LPD after T-cell-replete haplo-HSCT with PTCy. One of these is the first reported case of EBV-positive mucocutaneous ulcer (EBVMCU) developing after PTCy.

We aimed to analyze the characteristics and response rates of different treatment modalities in hairy cell leukemia patients over 20 diagnosed as hairy cell leukemia (HCL). Clinical data, response rates and survival outcome of the patients who were diagnosed with HCL were retrospectively analyzed. Fifty-two patients with a median age of 50 (28-87) years were enrolled in the study.

Extranodal NK/T cell lymphoma (ENKTL) is a rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. It mostly occurs in the upper respiratory tract. Cutaneous involvement can be seen among the extranasal ENKTLs.

Myeloid or granulocytic sarcoma (GS) is a tumoral lesion consisting of immature granulocytic cells. It is a rare entity during the course of CML patients especially after allogeneic stem cell transplantation (SCT). Relapse without bone marrow involvement is much rarer.

Background/aim: Diffuse large B-cell primary gastric lymphomas (DLBC-PGLs) are treated with different therapies. Their optimal treatment is not well documented.

Materials And Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the data of 51 patients diagnosed with DLBC-PGL in the previous 10 years.

A 31-year-old female with Primary Sjögren Syndrome (pSS) presented with bilateral puffiness around the eye for 3 years. The lacrimal glands were hypertrophic and edematous bilaterally. Schirmer 1 score was 2 and 1 mm and tear-film break-up time was 3 and 4 seconds, in the right and the left eyes, respectively.

Progressive transformation of germinal centers (PTGCs) is a benign disease of the lymph nodes that is rarely associated with Hodgkin disease. We reviewed the clinical and pathologic features of PTGCs and the relationship of PTGCs with lymphoid neoplasia in an adult population. The data from 33 patients who were diagnosed with PTCGs were retrospectively analyzed.

Ocular adnexal lymphoma (OAL) is a rare manifestation of non-Hodgkin lymphoma consisting of the tissues and structures surrounding the eye that include the conjunctiva, eyelids, lacrimal gland, and orbital soft tissues. OAL comprise 1% to 2% of all non-Hodgkin lymphomas and about 8% of the extranodal lymphomas; however, the incidence of OAL has increased by approximately 6% annually in last 2 decades, and OAL now represents the majority of orbital malignancies. There are no uniform treatment guidelines for OAL.

Intravascular large B-cell lymphoma (IVLBCL) is a very rare type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, usually affecting elderly patients and characterized by selective infiltration of neoplastic cells within blood vessels' lumina. IVLBCL diagnosed with prostatic involvement is extremely rare. We report a patient of 65 years old, having mostly neurological complaints but diagnosed with IVLBCL upon histopathological examination of transurethral prostate resection material, which revealed large neoplastic cell infiltration totally limited within the lumens of small vessels.

Warthin's tumor is the second most common type of salivary gland tumor. Microscopically, Warthin's tumor displays a proliferative epithelial component and lymphoid stroma. Carcinomas arising from the epithelial component are well known, but malignant transformations of the lymphoid stroma are rare.

CXCR5 [chemokine (C-X-C motif) receptor 5; also known as Burkitt lymphoma receptor 1 (BCR1)] is expressed on mature B-cells, subsets of CD4+ and CD8+ T-cells, and skin-derived migratory dendritic cells. Together with its ligand, CXCL13, CXCR5 is involved in guiding B-cells into the B-cell zones of secondary lymphoid organs as well as T-cell migration. This study evaluated the role of common germline genetic variation in CXCR5 in the risk and prognosis of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) using a clinic-based study of 1,521 controls and 2,694 NHL cases including 710 chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma, 586 diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), 588 follicular lymphoma (FL), 137 mantle cell lymphoma (MCL), 230 marginal zone lymphoma (MZL), and 158 peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL).

In the 2008 WHO lymphoma classification, 'EBV-positive diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) of the elderly is included as a new provisional entity. We aimed to evaluate the morphological, immunophenotypic, and clinical characteristics of the cases diagnosed as 'EBV-positive DLBCL of the elderly' in our center and compared them with the 'EBV-negative DLBCL' patients older than 50 years of age. EBV status was detected by Epstein-Barr early RNA (EBER) in situ hybridization analysis.

The risk of de novo malignancy is significantly higher in patients who have undergone organ transplantation than in the general population. Long-term immunosuppressive treatment, in addition to age, genetic predisposition and infectious agents, plays a major role in the development of malignancy. Although skin and hemopoietic system cancers are common, atypical presentations of malignancies may occasionally be seen during long-term follow-up in patients with functioning allografts.
