Background: Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is associated with various cardiovascular abnormalities, including spontaneous coronary artery dissection and atrial fibrillation. However, limited data exist to describe the association between ADPKD and acute coronary syndrome or heart failure.

Aims: This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the occurrence of cardiovascular events among patients with ADPKD compared to those without ADPKD.

Background: Though lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) use is rising in the United States amid expanding research into the therapeutic potential of psychedelics, little scholarly work exists on whether perceived risk of trying LSD (prLSD) is changing or factors influencing prLSD among the general public. Therefore, we sought to investigate changes in prLSD from 2015 to 2019 and identify characteristics associated with prLSD among respondents to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH).

Methods: Using NDSUH data from 2015 to 2019, we investigated correlates of and temporal trends in prLSD, reporting results for the entire sample, as well under age 18 (<18) and age 18 and older (18+) subgroups.

The classic psychedelic psilocybin has attracted special interest across clinical and non-clinical settings as a potential tool for mental health. Despite increasing attention to challenging psychedelic experiences, few studies have explored the relevance of shame-related processes with psychedelic use. This prospective, longitudinal study involved sequential, automated, web-based surveys that collected data from 679 adults planning to use psilocybin in naturalistic settings at timepoints before and after psilocybin use.

Rationale: There is increasing interest in establishing psychedelic research programs at academic medical centers. However, psychedelics are intensely psychoactive, carry considerable sociopolitical baggage, and most are Schedule I drugs, creating significant potential impediments to implementation. There is little formal guidance for investigators on navigating the complex on-the-ground obstacles associated with establishing psychedelic research programs.

Background: As classic psychedelics' therapeutic potential is studied and their popularity continues to rise, it is important to establish their relative risks and benefits. Previous surveys have tended to use convenience sampling on social media, select participants who have had either extremely positive or negative effects, and have not compared the risk/benefit profile of psychedelics to other substances.

Aims: To address these limitations, we gathered samples from an opt-in panel service using quota-based sampling to approximate demographics representing US Census data, did not pre-specify positive or negative experiences, and compared experiences with psychedelics to those with cannabis.

  • Psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT) with substances like psilocybin and MDMA shows potential for treating depression and PTSD, with possible approval as medicines within the next decade.
  • A study involving 879 U.S. healthcare professionals found most respondents had strong belief in the therapeutic benefits of these substances, but exhibited low knowledge about their risks and uses.
  • Factors such as prior psychedelic use, greater self-rated knowledge, younger age, and specific professional roles influenced openness to using these therapies, highlighting the need for more training and education on the topic.

Article Synopsis
  • Psilocybin, found in magic mushrooms, is being researched for its potential benefits on mental health, with focus growing on its naturalistic use in real-world settings.
  • The study aimed to assess how naturalistic psilocybin use affects health outcomes and experiences differently for White individuals compared to Participants of Color.
  • Results showed that race/ethnicity influenced the effects of psilocybin on outcomes like spiritual wellbeing, cognitive flexibility, and emotion regulation, suggesting that context of use may vary across different racial groups.

Background: Primary aldosteronism (PA) is now recognized as the most prevalent form of secondary hypertension globally, contributing significantly to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. This umbrella review aims to systematically compare cardiovascular outcomes and all-cause mortality in PA patients undergoing adrenalectomy versus mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist (MRA) treatment, aiming to inform optimal management strategies.

Method: Following PRISMA guidelines (Supplemental Digital Content 1, http://links.

Importance: A clear and comprehensive understanding of risks associated with psychedelic-assisted therapy is necessary as investigators extend its application to new populations and indications.

Objective: To assess adverse events (AEs) associated with classic psychedelics, particularly serious AEs (SAEs) and nonserious AEs (NSAEs) requiring medical or psychiatric evaluation.

Data Sources: The search for potentially eligible studies was conducted in the Scopus, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and Web of Science databases from inception through February 8, 2024.

Background: We aimed to explore how probiotics, prebiotics, or synbiotics impact glycemic indices in patients with diabetes mellitus.

Method: A comprehensive search was conducted on PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science from inception up to April 2023. The random-effects model was employed for the study analysis.

  • This umbrella review synthesizes findings from previous meta-analyses about the Triglyceride and Glucose (TyG) Index to inform clinicians and policymakers about its clinical relevance and potential health outcomes.
  • The review included a total of 32 studies and used comprehensive methods to analyze how the TyG index correlates with various health issues, like increased risks of kidney diseases, type 2 diabetes, and specific metabolic conditions.
  • Notably, a high TyG index is linked to serious health risks, including chronic kidney disease, diabetes, cognitive impairments, and cardiovascular problems, highlighting its significance as a biomarker in clinical settings.

Background: Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure that has recently emerged as a treatment option for autonomous functioning thyroid nodules (AFTNs), offering a less invasive alternative to surgery. The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to evaluate the efficacy of RFA for AFTNs.

Method: Global databases of PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library were systematically searched from 1990 until January 5, 2024, for studies on AFTNs undergoing RFA that presented volume reduction ratio (VRR) for at least one of 1, 3, 6 or 12 months post-operative follow-up with the results presented as means.

Objectives: Stroke is a leading cause of mortality and disability globally, with limited treatment options available for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is not only widespread but also a known risk factor for stroke. Our meta-analysis aims to assess the influence of pre-stroke metformin use on the clinical outcomes in AIS patients with T2DM.

Background: Contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) is a form of acute kidney injury (AKI) occurring in patients undergoing cardiac catheterization, such as coronary angiography (CAG) or percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Although the conventional criterion for CIN detection involves a rise in creatinine levels within 72 h after contrast media injection, several limitations exist in this definition. Up to now, various meta-analyses have been undertaken to assess the accuracy of different biomarkers of CIN prediction.

We examined if the therapeutic alliance between study participants and intervention facilitators in a psilocybin-assisted therapy (PAT) trial changed over time and whether there were relationships between alliance, acute psilocybin experiences, and depression outcomes. In a randomized, waiting list-controlled clinical trial for major depressive disorder in adults (N = 24), participants were randomized to an immediate (N = 13) or delayed (N = 11) condition with two oral doses of psilocybin (20mg/70kg and 30mg/70kg). Ratings of therapeutic alliance significantly increased from the final preparation session to one-week post-intervention (p = .

  • Endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) is the main treatment for acute ischemic stroke due to large-vessel blockage, but there’s ongoing debate about the best blood pressure control after the procedure.
  • This study aimed to compare the effects of different systolic blood pressure targets on patient outcomes, mortality, and complications after EVT in ischemic stroke patients.
  • A systematic review of four randomized clinical trials involving 1,571 patients found that those with intensive blood pressure control had lower rates of functional independence after the procedure, though other complications showed no significant difference.
