The development of long-acting drug formulations requires efficient characterization technique as the designed 6-12 months release duration renders real-time in vitro and in vivo experiments cost and time prohibitive. Using a novel image-based release modeling method, release profiles were predicted from X-Ray Microscopy (XRM) of T0 samples. A validation study with the in vitro release test shows good prediction accuracy of the initial burst release.

Background: The major by-products of mango processing are the seeds, which represent approximately 15-20% of the fruit. The process protocol for isolation of starch from mango kernel was standardized based on starch yield, starch purity and colour values using centrifugation and chemical method. Optimized starches obtained from both methods were further investigated for estimation of functional properties and were characterized through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and pasting properties analysis.

Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) have emerged as a versatile class of semiconductors for numerous optoelectronic applications. Here, we demonstrate light-excitation-dependent two-dimensional (2D) position-sensitive detectors (PSDs) using a mixed-phase perovskite, FACsPb(IBr), as the active semiconductor, incorporated within a five-terminal device geometry. The light-induced lateral photovoltage, which is initiated by selective charge transfer across the metal-perovskite barrier interface, is utilized to achieve the excitation-position-dependent electric response.

Background And Objectives: There are reports of outcomes of elective major cancer surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic. We evaluated if reinforcement of hand hygiene, universal masking, and distancing as a part of pandemic precautions led to a decrease in the incidence of surgical site infections (SSIs) in major oncologic resections.

Methods: Propensity score matching using the nearest neighbor algorithm was performed on 3123 patients over seven covariates (age, comorbidities, surgery duration, prior treatment, disease stage, reconstruction, and surgical wound type) yielding 2614 matched (pre-COVID 1612 and COVID 1002) patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The immune response in COVID-19 involves significant changes in cell types, particularly with increased activity and movement of innate immune cells like neutrophils and megakaryocytes, which interact with lymphoid cells.
  • There is a notable decrease in certain lymphoid cells, especially natural killer cells and some T cell types, alongside an expansion of plasmablasts in severe cases of COVID-19.
  • Although some immune cell subsets show heightened responses to interferon type I, their overall reaction is less pronounced in severe cases compared to milder infections, indicating complex interactions between different immune cell types affecting disease severity.

Article Synopsis
  • SUMO conjugation can change a protein's activity or function, with many targets identified but their biological roles often unclear.
  • The multi-aminoacyl tRNA synthetase complex (MARS) is important for immune signaling and its proteins, including Arginyl tRNA Synthetase (RRS), are modified by SUMO in response to infections.
  • Using genetic tools like CRISPR/Cas9, researchers created variants of RRS resistant to SUMO conjugation and studied their effects on the immune response in animals, finding that these variants influence how the body responds to bacterial infections.
