Unusual self-assembly of a hydrophilic β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex into vesicles capable of drug encapsulation and release.

Formation of a hydrophilic β-cyclodextrin bis-inclusion complex and its self-assembly into supramolecular vesicles are described. The vesicles can be loaded with the anti-cancer drug doxorubicin and the loaded drug can be released upon addition of a competitive inclusion binder such as adamantane carboxylate.

Expression of interleukin-22 in decidua of patients with early pregnancy and unexplained recurrent pregnancy loss.

Purpose: Researchers have hypothesized that an imbalance of immune cells in the uterine decidua and a dysfunction in cytokines they produce may contribute to recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL). The objective of this study was to determine if IL-22, IL-23 and IL-17 are expressed abnormally in the decidua of patients with RPL compared to those women with a normal pregnancy. We also sought to confirm that uterine natural killer (uNK) cells are lower in the decidua of patients with RPL, as well as identify IL-22 expression by uNK cells.

Synthesis and biological evaluation of new imidazo[2,1-b][1,3,4]thiadiazole-benzimidazole derivatives.

In this report, we describe the synthesis and biological evaluation of a new series of 2-(imidazo[2,1-b][1,3,4]thiadiazol-5-yl)-1H-benzimidazole derivatives (5a-ac). The molecules were analyzed by (1)H NMR, (13)C NMR, mass spectral and elemental data. The structure of one of the pre-final compounds, 6-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2-(4-methylphenyl)imidazo[2,1-b][1,3,4]thiadiazole-5-carbaldehyde (4d) and that of a target compound, 2-[2-methyl-6-(4-methyl phenyl) imidazo[2,1-b][1,3,4]thiadiazol-5-yl]-1H-benzimidazole (5aa) were confirmed by single crystal XRD studies.

Hierarchical graphical models for simultaneous tracking and recognition in wide-area scenes.

We present a unified framework to track multiple people, as well localize, and label their activities, in complex long-duration video sequences. To do this, we focus on two aspects: 1) the influence of tracks on the activities performed by the corresponding actors and 2) the structural relationships across activities. We propose a two-level hierarchical graphical model, which learns the relationship between tracks, relationship between tracks, and their corresponding activity segments, as well as the spatiotemporal relationships across activity segments.

Cerebral nocardiosis.

Cerebral Nocardiosis is a rare, challenging, opportunistic infectious disease of the central nervous system occurring in both immunocompetent and immunocompromised hosts. It often results in intraparenchymal abscess formation, which represents only 2% of all cerebral abscesses. The diagnosis of cerebral Nocardiosis is seldom based on imaging.

Autonomic and Enteric Nervous System Dysfunction May Play a Role in Hyperemesis Gravidarum.

Background: Nausea and vomiting, seen in 70-85% of all pregnancies, becomes intractable in hyperemesis gravidarum (HG). We aimed to investigate the relationship between HG and autonomic nervous system functioning and gastric electrical activity.

Methods: Twenty-seven pregnant patients, 21 with HG and six normal, were studied with sympathetic adrenergic; percent vasoconstriction (%VC) and postural adjustment ratio (PAR); parasympathetic vagal cholinergic functions by R-to-R intervals (RRIs), a total autonomic score; and enteric nervous system measured by electrogastrography (EGG).

Topical Cyclosporine A 1% for the Treatment of Chronic Follicular Conjunctivitis.

Objective: To evaluate the use of topical cyclosporine A (CSA) 1% in the treatment of chronic follicular conjunctivitis (CFC).

Methods: Retrospective chart review from 2001 to 2012 identified 12 patients (22 eyes) with CFC (mean ± standard deviation [SD] age, 50.2 ± 15.

Fine needle aspiration cytology of thyroid lesions and its correlation with histopathology in a series of 248 patients.

Thyroid swellings are a significant clinical problem in the general population but majority of them are nonneoplastic and do not require surgery. The initial screening procedures include ultrasonography, fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) and radionucleotide scan. An initial screening test which will diagnose thyroid lesions accurately will help to avoid surgery in nonneoplastic conditions.

Endometrial VEGF induces placental sFLT1 and leads to pregnancy complications.

There is strong evidence that overproduction of soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFLT1) in the placenta is a major cause of vascular dysfunction in preeclampsia through sFLT1-dependent antagonism of VEGF. However, the cause of placental sFLT1 upregulation is not known. Here we demonstrated that in women with preeclampsia, sFLT1 is upregulated in placental trophoblasts, while VEGF is upregulated in adjacent maternal decidual cells.

The Revised Sonographic NASCET Index: A New Hemodynamic Parameter for the Assessment of Internal Carotid Artery Stenosis.

Purpose: A previously described Doppler parameter, the sonographic NASCET index (SNI), was derived to be more directly analogous to the North American Symptomatic Carotid Endarterectomy Trial (NASCET) methodology for assessing carotid artery stenosis. However, this index does not account for complex changes affecting the Doppler waveform. We propose a revised SNI (rSNI) in an effort to improve predicting carotid stenosis.

Topical cyclosporine a 1% for the treatment of chronic ocular surface inflammation.

Objective: To evaluate the use of topical cyclosporine A (CsA) 1% emulsion in the treatment of chronic ocular surface inflammation (OSI).

Methods: We conducted a retrospective chart review of patients with various forms of OSI treated with topical CsA 1% from 2001 to 2012.

Results: Twenty-nine patients (52 eyes) with various forms of OSI, including epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (n=14), chronic follicular conjunctivitis (n=12), Thygeson superficial punctate keratopathy (n=2), and vernal keratoconjunctivitis (n=1), were included.

Feasibility of retinal screening in a pediatric population with type 1 diabetes mellitus.

Purpose: To study the feasibility of using a nonmydriatic camera to screen children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1) as young as 2 years for diabetic retinopathy.

Methods: Prospective pilot imaging study involving children with DM1 aged 2 to 17 years. The screening consisted of: (1) intake form; (2) measurement of blood pressure, pulse, and oximetry; (3) assessment of visual acuity (SIMAV, Padova, Italy); and (4) nonmydriatic color imaging (Canon CX-1 45° 15.

Pulmonary coccidioidomycosis: pictorial review of chest radiographic and CT findings.

Pulmonary coccidioidomycosis is a fungal disease endemic to the desert regions of the southwestern United States, Mexico, Central America, and South America. The incidence of reported disease increased substantially between 1998 and 2011, and the infection is encountered beyond the endemic areas because of a mobile society. The disease is caused by inhalation of spores of Coccidioides species.

Nonlinear control of voltage source converters in AC-DC power system.

This paper presents the design of a robust nonlinear controller for a parallel AC-DC power system using a Lyapunov function-based sliding mode control (LYPSMC) strategy. The inputs for the proposed control scheme are the DC voltage and reactive power errors at the converter station and the active and reactive power errors at the inverter station of the voltage-source converter-based high voltage direct current transmission (VSC-HVDC) link. The stability and robust tracking of the system parameters are ensured by applying the Lyapunov direct method.

Antagonism at combined effects of chemical fertilizers and carbamate insecticides on the rice-field N2-fixing cyanobacterium Cylindrospermum sp. in vitro.

Effects of chemical fertilizers (urea, super phosphate and potash) on toxicities of two carbamate insecticides, carbaryl and carbofuran, individually to the N2-fixing cyanobacterium, Cylindrospermum sp. were studied in vitro at partially lethal levels (below highest permissive concentrations) of each insecticide. Periocular sebaceous cell carcinoma following chemical burn: a unique case of a Marjolin ulcer.

This study reports a unique case of a Marjolin ulcer in a patient who presented with periocular sebaceous cell carcinoma 16 years after a lye chemical burn. A 68-year-old woman presented with a long history of irregular and tender right upper and lower eyelid margins, periocular erythema, madarosis, trichiasis, ptosis, and chemosis, occurring many years after chemical burn to the area. After eyelid biopsy established the diagnosis of sebaceous cell carcinoma, subsequent map biopsies of the conjunctival surface revealed extensive sebaceous cell carcinoma with pagetoid spread, necessitating anterior exenteration for definitive treatment.

Hemorrhagic colloid cyst: Case report and review of the literature.

Colloid cysts are cystic lesions located at the anterior part of third ventricle, close to foramen of Monro and contain colloid material. Hemorrhage in a colloid cyst is very rare. On literature review, we found only six cases of hemorrgic colloid cyst; among them, four were diagnosed at postmortem examination.

Postirradiation periocular granuloma faciale associated with uveitis.

Granuloma faciale is a rare dermatopathologic condition that presents as brown-red plaques, nodules, or papules primarily on the face, with the potential for extrafacial and mucous membrane involvement. A case of an 83-year-old woman with periocular granuloma faciale accompanied by a marked anterior uveitis is presented; an association of periocular granuloma faciale with anterior uveitis has not been previously reported.
