Objective: . The aim of this study was to evaluate smoking trends among Spanish men and women by social class between 1987 and 1997.

Methods: We used secondary analysis of the National Health Interview Surveys of 1987, 1993, 1995, and 1997.

[Mortality by social and economic characteristics: The Mortality Study of the Autonomous Community of Madrid].

Background: To estimate the effect of marital status, household size, employment status, educational level and occupation on mortality.

Subjects And Method: About 3,100,000 persons 24 years and older resident on first of May, 1996 in Autonomous Community of Madrid. For the next 19 months information on individuals who died were obtained by linking Mortality Register and 1996 Population Census.

[Changes in socioeconomic differences in the utilization of and accessibility to health services in Spain between 1987 and 1995/97].

Background: The objective of this study is to evaluate the trend in the use and accessibility of health services in Spain between 1987 and 1995-1997 in groups with different socio-economic characteristics.

Methods: The data used are taken from National Health Surveys carried out on the adult population in 1987 and 1995-97 by the Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs. The information for 1995 and 1997 has been combined due to the different sample size, in such a way that the estimates so obtained are the mean from both years.

Association of the HLA-DRB1*0301 and HLA-DQA1*0501 alleles with Graves' disease in a population representing the gene contribution from several ethnic backgrounds.

Graves' disease (GD) is the most frequent cause of hyperthyroidism. Although the etiology is not completely elucidated, there are several lines of evidence suggesting multifactorial mechanisms. Genetic, constitutional, and environmental factors are involved in its pathogenesis.

Effects of heat treatment of casein in the presence of reducing sugars on calcium bioavailability: in vitro and in vivo assays.

Casein-glucose-fructose mixtures unheated (C) or after heating (HC) were added to a solution of ionic calcium to study calcium speciation and included in diets (C-D, HC-D) for rats. Samples and diets were digested in vitro. Supernatants of digested samples were used for transport experiments with Caco-2 cells.

In vivo anti-inflammatory activity of saponins from Bupleurum rotundifolium.

Seven oleanane-type triterpene saponins were isolated from the methanolic extract of the aerial parts of Bupleurum rotundifolium. They were identified on the basis of their spectral data as 3-O-[alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl (1-->2)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl (1-->2)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl]-28-O-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl (1-->2)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl] echinocystic acid (saponin 1), 3-O-[alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl (1-->2)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl (1-->2)-beta-D-fucopyranosyl] 11-methoxy-primulagenin A (saponin 2), rotundioside E (saponin 3), rotundioside F (saponin 4), 3beta-sulfate, 28-O-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl (1-->6)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl (1-->2)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl (1-->2)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl] ester of primulagenin A (saponin 5), rotundioside C (saponin 6) and 3-O-[alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl (1-->2)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl (1-->2)-beta-D-fucopyranosyl] 11-methoxy-16beta,21alpha,28-trihydroxyolean-12-ene (saponin 7). All these saponins proved to be effective against TPA-induced ear edema in mice.

Porcine IgA allotypes are not equally transcribed or expressed in heterozygous swine.

The prediction of 1:1 expression of constant region allotypes in heterozygous animals assumes that productive VDJ rearrangements occur at random between chromosomes, switch recombination is random, there is no allele-related defect in switching and there is no selection for a B-cell receptor bearing a certain constant region allotype. In data reported here, this prediction was often not fulfilled for the transcripts encoding the IgAa and IgAb alleles of porcine IgA including those from late term fetal piglets that are not in contact with environmental antigens or maternal regulatory factors. In the spleen, thymus, mesenteric lymph node (MLN), ileal Peyer patches, parotid gland and PBLs of 5-week-old conventionally-reared Duroc pigs, ratios of IgAa to IgAb transcripts as high as 4:1 were observed.

Sequence and analysis of chromosome 3 of the plant Arabidopsis thaliana.

Arabidopsis thaliana is an important model system for plant biologists. In 1996 an international collaboration (the Arabidopsis Genome Initiative) was formed to sequence the whole genome of Arabidopsis and in 1999 the sequence of the first two chromosomes was reported. The sequence of the last three chromosomes and an analysis of the whole genome are reported in this issue.

Hypogonadotropic hypogonadism: retrospective analysis of 19 cases.

Akt mediates insulin rescue from apoptosis in brown adipocytes: effect of ceramide.

We have recently shown that insulin can rescue serum deprived adipocytes from apoptosis in a PI 3 kinase and MAP kinase dependent manner. This study investigated the contribution of Akt and p70S6-kinase in insulin rescue from two different apoptotic triggers, serum deprivation and ceramide treatment. Insulin rescued serum-deprived immortalized brown adipocytes from apoptosis through phosphatidylinositol (PI) 3-kinase and Akt pathways, but independently of p70S6-kinase, as demonstrated by the use of inhibitors such as LY294002 or Rapamycin, and transfection experiments with dominant-negative constructs of Akt or p85 subunit of PI 3-kinase.

A study on the polymorphism of human MHC class I-related MR1 gene and identification of an MR1-like pseudogene.

Human MR1 is a recently discovered, ubiquitously transcribed gene very similar to the HLA class I loci and of unknown function. Mouse and rat MR1 sequences have also been described showing high similarity with the human gene. The goal of this work was to investigate if human MR1 was polymorphic.

Zinc transport in Caco-2 cells and zinc balance in rats: influence of the heat treatment of a casein-glucose-fructose mixture.

The effects of the heat treatment of casein in the presence of glucose-fructose on Zn bioavailability were studied. Changes in Zn speciation were compared after in vitro digestion of heated (HC) and unheated mixture (C) alone and as part of the diet. The uptake and transport of digested soluble Zn was investigated in Caco-2 cells grown in bicameral chambers; balance studies were done in rats fed diets containing the different samples.

Antibody repertoire development in fetal and newborn piglets, III. Colonization of the gastrointestinal tract selectively diversifies the preimmune repertoire in mucosal lymphoid tissues.

Changes in the VH-region repertoire of isolator piglets reared for 6 weeks under germ-free (GF) conditions and those colonized (COL) with a defined exclusion flora on the 1st day of life were compared. Although serum immunoglobulin levels were 20-100-fold higher in COL piglets than GF piglets, an analysis of peripheral blood B cells (PBBs) indicated that: GF and COL piglets used the same four VH genes and two DH segments during the 6-week period; proportional usage of VH genes and DH segments was the same as in fetal animals; and VH and DH usage did not differ between COL and GF animals. This pattern differed from the PBBs from 6-week-old conventional (CONV) piglets.

Okadaic acid inhibits insulin-induced glucose transport in fetal brown adipocytes in an Akt-independent and protein kinase C zeta-dependent manner.

In the present study we have investigated the effect of increased serine/threonine phosphorylation of insulin receptor substrates-1 and -2 (IRS-1 and IRS-2) by okadaic acid pretreatment on brown adipocyte insulin signalling leading to glucose transport, an important metabolic effect of insulin in brown adipose tissue. Okadaic acid pretreatment before insulin stimulation decreased IRS-1 and IRS-2 tyrosine phosphorylation in parallel to a decrease in their sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis mobility. IRS-1/IRS-2-associated p85alpha and phosphatidylinositol (PI) 3-kinase enzymatic activity were partly reduced in brown adipocytes pretreated with okadaic acid upon stimulation with insulin.

Genetic differences in the frequency of the hinge variants of porcine IgA is breed dependent.

The distribution of the IgA(a) and IgA(b) alleles of porcine IgA in over 160 randomly-selected animals revealed an abundance of heterozygotes but only two b/b homozygotes. Since the IgA(b) allotype is a splice site mutant lacking two-thirds of the hinge, this study tests the hypothesis that pigs with this genotype may be at a selective disadvantage while heterozygous individuals may be at some advantage. This hypothesis was tested by collecting data on 374 animals of known breed and often parentage.

Oxidative stress induced by copper in sunflower plants.

The toxic effect of copper was evaluated in sunflower plants by means of root elongation, lipid peroxidation and antioxidative enzyme activities. Plants were grown under controlled environmental conditions in hydroponic culture for two weeks and exposed to different copper concentrations for an additional week. Determinations were performed in both roots and leaves.

Basal cell carcinoma with prominent central palisading of epithelial cells mimicking schwannoma.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC), the most common malignant neoplasm of skin, may show a wide spectrum of histologic appearances. The presence of peripheral palisades is a very characteristic feature of BCC but, to our knowledge, central nuclear palisading has never been described. We report two cases of BCC exhibiting striking central nuclear palisading with Verocaylike bodies, in a pattern reminiscent of schwannoma.

Synthesis and characterization of novel palladium(II) complexes of bis(thiosemicarbazone). Structure, cytotoxic activity and DNA binding of Pd(II)-benzyl bis(thiosemicarbazonate).

The preparation of palladium(II) complexes of 3,5-diacyl-1,2,4-triazole bis(thiosemicarbazone) (H2L2), 2,6-diacylpyridine bis(thiosemicarbazone) (H2L3) and benzyl bis(thiosemicarbazone) (H2L4) is described. The new complexes [PdCl2(H2L2)] (1), [PdCl2(H2L3)] (2) and [PdL4].DMF (3) have been characterized by elemental analyses and spectroscopic studies (IR, 1H NMR and UV-Vis).

Histamine induces tyrosine phosphorylation of endothelial cell-to-cell adherens junctions.

Endothelial adherens junctions (AJ) promote intercellular adhesion and may contribute to the control of vascular permeability. These structures are formed by a transmembrane and cell-specific adhesive protein, vascular endothelial (VE)-cadherin, which is linked by its cytoplasmic tail to intracellular proteins called catenins (alpha-catenin, beta-catenin, and plakoglobin) and to the actin cytoskeleton. Little is known about the functional regulation of AJ in endothelial cells.

Synthesis and characterization of complexes of p-isopropyl benzaldehyde and methyl 2-pyridyl ketone thiosemicarbazones with Zn(II) and Cd(II) metallic centers. Cytotoxic activity and induction of apoptosis in Pam-ras cells.

It is known that metallic complexes of methyl 2-pyridyl ketone thiosemicarbazone (HL1) and p-isopropyl benzaldehyde thiosemicarbazone (HL2) may have potential antitumor activity. We have prepared complexes of HL1 and HL2 with Zn(II) and Cd(II). The cytotoxic activity shown by these compounds against cell lines sensitive and resistant to cis-diamminedichloroplatinum(II) (cis-DDP) indicates that coupling of HL1 and HL2 to Zn(II) and Cd(II) centers may result in metallic complexes with important biological properties since they display IC50 values in a microM range similar to that of the antitumor drug cis-DDP.

Beta-lactam degradation catalysed by Cd2+ ion in methanol.

Study Objective: To examine and compare the relation between inequalities in perceived general health and education in the 17 regions of Spain.

Design And Methods: Data were taken from the 1993 Spanish Health Interview Survey. For each region we calculated the magnitude of inequality in perceived general health in association with educational level by a measure of association or effect and by a relative index of inequality.
