Background: Very few studies have analyzed early histologic lesions of diabetic nephropathy (DN) in patients without signs of clinical involvement (microalbuminuria). In this study, we analyzed renal histologic lesions in necropsies of diabetic patients with or without previous signs of DN.
Methods: Histological material was analyzed from 21 autopsies of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients (9 with albuminuria and 12 without albuminuria) and 4 controls.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is an incurable neurodegenerative disorder which affects over 10 million people worldwide. Early detection and correct evaluation of the disease is critical for appropriate medication and to slow the advance of the symptoms. In this scenario, it is critical to develop clinical decision support systems contributing to an early, efficient, and reliable diagnosis of this illness.

Different strategies have been implemented such as centralized purchasing to optimize budgetary resources. However, there is still a need for a mechanism to optimize these drugs further.

This research evaluated how paralytic shellfish toxins affected the principal bioenergetic constituents and fatty acids composition of the carnivorous snail Chorus giganteus. Snails were separated into a "toxic" group that was fed the toxic clam Mulinia edulis (which was previously fed A.

We aimed to evaluate whether bendopnea and the change in oxygen saturation when bending forward (bending oxygen saturation index [BOSI]) are associated with adverse outcomes in ambulatory chronic heart failure (CHF) patients.
Methods And Results: We prospectively evaluated 440 subjects with symptomatic CHF.
Tuning the properties of oxide surfaces through the adsorption of designed ligands is highly desirable for several applications, such as catalysis. N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have been successfully employed as ligands for the modification of metallic surfaces. On the other hand, their potential as modifiers of ubiquitous oxide surfaces still needs to be developed.

With this aim, we have selected the imine-linked 3D COFs COF-300 and LZU-111 as examples of flexible and rigid frameworks, respectively. Optimized syntheses at room temperature or in solvothermal conditions enabled us to selectively isolate the narrow-pore form of COF-300 (COF-300-rt) or a mixture of the narrow-pore and a larger-pore form (COF-300-st), respectively, with different textural properties (BET specific surface area = 39 or 1270 m/g, respectively, from N adsorption at 77 K).

Sleep disturbances are strongly linked with mental diseases such as substance use disorder (SUD) or schizophrenia (SZ) which can have a detrimental impact on quality of life (QOL), especially when both disorders are comorbid (dual disorder). In absence of studies about both circadian characteristics and QOL in patients with SUD and comorbid SZ (SUD + SZ), we examined a sample of 155 male under treatment, 75 with SUD + SZ and 80 only with SUD. Circadian functioning was evaluated by chronotype, social jet-lag and sleep quality (using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, PSQI), while the QOL was obtained by the World Health Organization's Quality of Life Questionnaire (WHOQOL)-BREF.

Both types of sweeteners generate health problems, and both are being blamed for multiple complications associated with these prevalent diseases. As an example, fructose is proven to contribute to obesity and liver steatosis, while non-nutritive sweeteners generate gut dysbiosis that complicates the metabolic control exerted by the liver.

The aim of the present study was to analyze the proteomic effects of antioxidants on sperm from RM patients with high incidence of DSB. Proteomic analysis was performed using a tandem mass tag labeling technique, and subsequently compared with the PANTHER database for DEPs, and the STRING database for protein-protein interactions (PPI).

Here we use mesoporous crystals of the metal-organic framework (MOF) UiO-68-TZDC to demonstrate the value of tetrazine connectors for all-purpose inverse electron-demand Diels-Alder ligation chemistry. Our results suggest a positive effect of tetrazine reticulation over its reactivity for quantitative one-step functionalization with a broad scope of alkene or alkyne dienophiles into pyridazine and dihydropyridazine frameworks.

S-palmitoylated proteins are abundant in the neuronal system and are associated with neuronal diseases and cancer. Despite the importance of this post-translational modification, it has not been thoroughly studied in the model organism Drosophila melanogaster.

Between 13% and 18% of all-cause mortality in HIV-infected patients involves a liver-related damage, this being one of the main causes of death not related to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). People living with HIV, even when the disease is under control, are more likely to develop pathologies and complications of a liver-related origin than the general population, both due to common causes such as alcoholism, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, hepatic viral infections and ageing, in addition to specific HIV-related processes such as antiretroviral treatment toxicity and liver damage inherent to HIV infection.

Through numerous pathophysiological mechanisms such as melatonin dysregulation, it is hypothesised that ALAN exposure is involved in asthma and allergy, mental illness, and cancer outcomes. There are numerous existing studies considering these relationships; however, a critical appraisal of available evidence on health outcomes has not been completed.

Transport defects are early phenotypes in the progression of Alzheimer's disease, which lead to APP processing impairments. However, whether DYRK1A regulates the intracellular transport and delivery of APP in human neurons remains unknown.

In Chile, they are farming on the Chiloé island, where around 18% of the world's mussels are produced, however, their nutritional dynamics are largely unknown. For this reason, the objective of this study was to determine the proximal biochemical composition and the fatty acid profile in the Chilean oyster (Ostrea chilensis), the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) and the Chilean mussel (Mytilus chilensis), to perform an intra and interspecific comparison.

Lung-resident memory B cells (MBCs) provide localized protection against reinfection in respiratory airways. Currently, the biology of these cells remains largely unexplored. Here, we combined influenza and SARS-CoV-2 infection with fluorescent-reporter mice to identify MBCs regardless of antigen specificity.

In the present study, we aimed to evaluate if d-pinitol inositol, which acts as an insulin sensitizer, affects the phosphorylation status of tau protein.
Experimental Approach: We studied the pharmacological effect of d-pinitol on insulin signalling and tau phosphorylation in the hippocampus of Wistar and Zucker rats.
The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a global disruption of several services, including routine immunizations. This effect has been described in several countries, but there are few detailed studies in Latin America and no reports in Ecuador. Therefore, this work aims to quantify the reduction in routine immunizations for infants during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic in Ecuador.
