Rapid expansion in urban areas has engendered a superfluity of municipal solid waste (MSW) stemming from contemporary civilization, encompassing commercial sectors and human undertakings. Kerbside waste, a type of MSW, has the potential for recycling and reuse at the end of its first life cycle, but is often limited to a linear cycle. This study aimed to assess the life cycle costs of different separation and recycling methods for handling kerbside waste.

Using pulse radiolysis, this study determined that the bimolecular rate constants of scavenging cation radicals of retinoids by taurine are smaller than 2 × 10 Ms whereas lutein scavenges cation radicals of all three retinoids with the bimolecular rate constants approach the diffusion-controlled limits, while zeaxanthin is only 1.4-1.

The financial viability of PV installation is calculated based on the estimated price, solar rebates, feed-in tariff, energy supply cost, and other evaluation parameters available at the assessment time. This calculation implicitly assumes variable discount rates (4%, 7%, and 12%) to show how the future will unfold and its correlations with design parameters.

Methods: A theory-led systematic review of reviews examining barriers and facilitators to clinical behaviour change by PCPs in high-income primary care contexts using PRISMA. Embase, MEDLINE, PsychInfo, HMIC and Cochrane Library were searched.
The ongoing COVID-19 disease significantly affects not only human health, it also affects the wealth of country' economy and everyday routine of human life. To control the spread of the virus, face mask is used as primary personal protective equipment (PPE). Thus, the production and usage of face masks significantly increase as the COVID-19 pandemic still escalating.

To evaluate these system changes, we undertook one of the first Canadian health delivery system reviews and the first Canadian cancer centre evaluation of pandemic system modifications.
Methods: Questionnaires were distributed to the Canadian Association of Provincial Cancer Agencies (CAPCA) members in order to assess changes to cancer centre services and patient management.
Structural evaluation of masonry against dynamic seismic actions invariably requires appropriate cyclic compression constitutive models. However, not many research studies have been dedicated to date to investigate the cyclic compression behaviour of masonry. Therefore, series of experimental investigation followed by analytical model verification were employed in this research to better understand the cyclic compression characteristics of masonry.

Retinoid cation radicals can be formed as a result of the interaction between retinoids and other radicals or photoexcitation with light. It has been shown that such semi-oxidized retinoids can oxidize certain amino acids and proteins, and that α-tocopherol can scavenge the cation radicals of retinol and retinoic acid.

Objective: To evaluate the independent effect of sex and histology on mortality in a population of patients with NSCLC.
Methods: All patients with NSCLC in Manitoba from 1985 to 2004 were identified from the Manitoba Cancer Registry.

This may in part be due to female specific genetic and hormonal factors. In the present study, expression of ER-beta was investigated by immunohistochemistry using tissue samples from two cohorts: non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) diagnosed in 1999 in Manitoba and advanced NSCLC patients from the NCIC-CTG BR.

Non-small-cell lung cancer (nsclc) is the most common form of lung cancer, with a median age at diagnosis of 70 years. These elderly patients are often underrepresented in the randomized clinical trials upon which chemotherapy plans are based.

Methods: Data on baseline demographics, diagnostic and staging tests, timelines of investigations, and frequency of physician visits and hospital admissions were obtained from a provincial cancer registry and health administrative databases for 2852 patients, who were diagnosed with NSCLC from 1996 to 2000 in Manitoba, Canada. Dates between investigations were used to determine wait times surrounding diagnosis and fee codes for physician and hospital services were used to estimate costs.

Time-resolved pulse radiolysis investigations reported herein show that the carotenoids β-carotene, lycopene, zeaxanthin and astaxanthin (the last two are xanthophylls--oxygen containing carotenoids) are capable of both reducing oxidized guanosine as well as minimizing its formation. The reaction of the carotenoid with the oxidized guanosine produces the radical cation of the carotenoid. This behavior contrasts with the reactions between the amino acids and dietary carotenoids where the carotenoid radical cations oxidized the amino acids (tryptophan, cysteine and tyrosine) at physiological pH.

In all cases, photolysis occurs in at least two distinct stages. Evidence for the intermediacy of singlet oxygen comes from pulse radiolysis and time-resolved luminescence studies, which confirm formation of the OPV triplet state and its quenching by molecular oxygen to produce singlet oxygen.

Patients And Methods: Stage IIIB and IV NSCLC patients diagnosed between January 1997 and June 2000 who received chemotherapy as the primary treatment, completed their chemotherapy and survived for at least 28 days since their last treatment, and were on best supportive care (BSC) were selected. Treatment, services received, costs, and survival were determined by chart review and examining various databases including the Manitoba Cancer Registry, medical claims, hospitalizations, and prescription drugs.

The photophysical properties of the fluoroquinolone antibiotic sarafloxacin (SFX) were investigated in aqueous media. SFX in water, at pH 7.4, shows intense absorption with peaks at 272, 322 and 335 nm, (epsilon=36800 and 17000 dm3 mol(-1) cm(-1), respectively).

It is known that synthetic eumelanins from 5,6-dihydroxyindole are black and display a featureless UV-visible absorption spectrum, whereas those from 5,6-dihydroxyindole-2-carboxylic acid (1) are lighter in color and exhibit a distinct band around 310 nm, but the origin of this difference has never been addressed in detail. Recently, we showed that 5,6-dihydroxyindole dimers generate on pulse radiolysis oxidation strongly absorbing transients with intense maxima in the 500-600 nm region, which have been attributed to planar extended quinone methide species.

Methods: All diagnoses of NSCLC from January 1, 1985, to December 31, 2004, were extracted from the Manitoba Cancer Registry.
Fundamental photophysical properties have been obtained for six polyaromatics, calycine, usnic acid, vicanicine, 1-Cl-pannerine and epiphorelic acids I and II, extracted from Antarctic lichens--potential future sunscreens. None of the lichen compounds produced a measurable amount of triplet states and the singlet oxygen quantum yield was also very low ranging from 0.003 to 0.
