Background: The aim was to explore the feasibility and safety of performing common surgical steps in epiretinal membrane (ERM) peeling using the Preceyes Surgical System (PSS).

Methods: In a tertiary centre, 15 pseudophakic patients with an idiopathic ERM were randomised to robot-assistance or manual surgery in a 2:1 ratio. In the robot-assisted group, the following steps were performed using PSS: (1) staining the internal limiting membrane (ILM), (2) removal of the dye, (3) creating an ILM flap, (4) completing the peeling, (5) holding a light pipe and (6) fluid-air exchange.

Purpose: To compare the Preceyes Surgical Robotic System (Eindhoven, Netherlands) to manual internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling using the Eyesi surgical simulator (VRmagic, Mannheim, Germany) as the operative platform.

Methods: A comparative study was carried out with surgeons initially performing ILM peeling manually and then with the robot. Twenty-three vitreoretinal surgeons agreed to participate and all consented to the use of their surgical data from the Eyesi surgical simulator.

Purpose: Compare accuracy and precision in XYZ of stationary and dynamic tasks performed by surgeons with and without the use of a tele-operated robotic micromanipulator in a simulated vitreoretinal environment. Microsurgery of the retina would be dramatically improved by instruments that offer supra-human precision. Here, we report the results of a first-in-human study of remotely controlled robot-assisted retinal surgery performed through a telemanipulation device. Specifically, 12 patients requiring dissection of the epiretinal or inner limiting membrane over the macula were randomly assigned to either undergo robot-assisted-surgery or manual surgery, under general anaesthesia.

Purpose Of Review: Provide an overview of the current landscape of robotics in ophthalmology, including the pros and cons of system designs, the clinical development path, and the likely future direction of the field.

Recent Findings: Robots designed for eye surgery should meet certain basic requirements. Three designs are currently being developed: smart surgical tools such as the steady hand, comanipulation devices and telemanipulators using either a fixed or virtual remote center of motion.

Purpose: Retinal vein occlusions (RVO) are a major cause of vision loss in people aged 50 years and older. Current therapeutic options limit the consequences of RVO but do not eliminate the cause. Cannulation of the involved vessel and removal of the clot may provide a more permanent solution with a less demanding follow-up.

Purpose: To develop a methodology for cannulating porcine retinal venules using a robotic assistive arm after inducing a retinal vein occlusion using the photosensitizer rose bengal.

Methodology: Retinal vein occlusions proximal to the first vascular branch point were induced following intravenous injection of rose bengal by exposure to 532nm laser light delivered by slit-lamp or endolaser probe. Retinal veins were cannulated by positioning a glass catheter tip using a robotically controlled micromanipulator above venules with an outer diameter of 80μm or more and performing a preset piercing maneuver, controlled robotically.

Design: Standard methods of information-processing and cognitive science were used to study diagnostic processes (search, perception, reasoning) of 28 novices, intermediates, and experts. Participants examined cases in breast pathology; each case had a previously established gold standard diagnosis.

The virologic and cellular factors that are involved in transmission of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) across the female genital tissue are poorly understood. We have recently developed a human cervical tissue-derived organ culture model to study heterosexual transmission of HIV-1 that mimics the in vivo situation. Using this model we investigated the role of phenotypic characteristics of HIV-1 and identified the cell types that are first infected during transmission.

Objective: This study was designed to assess endometrial histology in postmenopausal women not taking hormone replacement therapy, to evaluate side effects and efficacy of phytoestrogens in treating menopause-associated symptoms, and to determine whether 6 months of phytoestrogen supplementation altered endometrial histology.

Methods: We performed a prospective, double-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled trial comparing the effects of 6 months of dietary phytoestrogen supplementation versus placebo in postmenopausal women. Baseline endometrial biopsies were performed and, if adequate, nonhyperplastic, noncancerous, and nonovulatory, subjects were randomly assigned to receive daily placebo or soy cereal supplementation for 6 months.

In this study, we use methods from information-processing to explore the visual diagnostic processes of novice, intermediate, and expert pathologists. Subjects were asked to examine and interpret a set of slides while we collected think-aloud verbal protocols and captured on digital video the actual visual data they examined from the microscope. We performed an in-depth combined video and protocol-based analysis of processes and errors occurring as the task was performed.

Background: Extraovarian müllerian adenocarcinoma (EOM) resembles primary ovarian carcinoma (POC) both histologically and clinically, yet little is known regarding the molecular genetic characteristics of this entity. The objective of this study was to compare the expression of three molecular markers of tumor behavior in EOMs and POCs.

Methods: Forty-four patients meeting strict criteria for EOM were identified and matched to POC controls for age, stage, tumor histology and grade, cytoreductive surgery, and survival.

This paper describes WebReport, a World Wide Web (WWW) client for the Image Engine multimedia clinical information system under development at the University of Pittsburgh. WebReport uses advanced HTML features such as frames, forms, tables and inline JPEG image display to provide an easy to use system for retrieving and viewing diagnostic images and reports generated by clinical procedures such as gastrointestinal endoscopy, radiology and surgical pathology. WebReport implements a number of WWW client-side features, such as HTML forms data entry verification and makes extensive use of the JavaScript programming language.

Normal reference values for flow cytometric immunophenotypic lymphocyte markers for cord blood (CB) were determined using sufficient numbers of subjects for clinical laboratory use. Samples from 202 normal gestations were processed by whole blood lysis and analyzed in the following combinations: CD14/45, CD4/3, CD8/3, CD45RA/4, CD29/4, CD56/3, Cd19/3, CD19/10. A standard infertility evaluation consists of a semen analysis, hysterosalpingogram, post-coital test, endometrial biopsy and laparoscopy. Although these tests are well grounded in clinical experience, information on their ability to discriminate between fertile and infertile couples is limited. In this study, we performed standard infertility tests plus two others--sperm antibodies and cervical culture for Mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma urealyticum--on fertile and infertile couples.

The purpose of this investigation was to develop a simple, quantitative, reproducible and objective method for estimating fetal hepatic hematopoiesis using flow cytometric light scatter measurements and to use this methodology to determine standard values for singleton gestations. Percent hepatic hematopoiesis was estimated from autopsy tissue both flow cytometrically using forward angle and side light scatter characteristics and histologically (single observer) in 67 s and third trimester singleton gestations without evidence of infection, congenital malformation, chronic maternal or placental disorders, or growth retardation. Correlation of flow cytometric and histologic estimates was 0.
