A fundamental breakthrough in neurobiology has been the formulation of the neuron doctrine by Santiago Ramón y Cajal, which stated that the nervous system is composed of discrete cells. Electron microscopy later confirmed the doctrine and allowed the identification of synaptic connections. In this work, we used volume electron microscopy and three-dimensional reconstructions to characterize the nerve net of a ctenophore, a marine invertebrate that belongs to one of the earliest-branching animal lineages.

Introduction: Mesenchymal stem cells are characterized by their capacities for extensive proliferation through multiple passages and, classically, tri-lineage differentiation along osteogenic, chondrogenic and adipogenic lineages. This study was carried out to compare osteogenesis in equine bone marrow-, synovium- and adipose-derived cells, and to determine whether osteogenic capacity is reflected in the basal expression of the critical osteogenic transcription factors Runx2 and Osterix.

A new class of axial-chiral biisoquinoline ,'-dioxides was evaluated as catalysts for the enantioselective hydrosilylation of acyl hydrazones with trichlorosilane. While these catalysts provided poor to moderate reactivity and enantioselectivity, this study represents the first example of the organocatalytic asymmetric reduction of acyl hydrazones. In addition, the structures and energies of two possible diastereomeric catalyst-trichlorosilane complexes (-HSiCl) were analyzed using density functional theory calculations.

The catalytic enantioselective ketimine Mannich and its related reactions provide direct access to chiral building blocks bearing an α-tertiary amine stereogenic center, a ubiquitous structural motif in nature. Although ketimines are often viewed as challenging electrophiles, various approaches/strategies to circumvent or overcome the adverse properties of ketimines have been developed for these transformations. This review showcases the selected examples that highlight the benefits and utilities of various ketimines and remaining challenges associated with them in the context of Mannich, allylation, and aza-Morita-Baylis-Hillman reactions as well as their variants.

Ctenophores are gelatinous marine animals famous for locomotion by ciliary combs. Due to the uncertainties of the phylogenetic placement of ctenophores and the absence of some key bilaterian neuronal genes, it has been hypothesized that their neurons evolved independently. Additionally, recent whole-body, single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) analysis failed to identify ctenophore neurons using any of the known neuronal molecular markers.

More than 150 years ago, in 1866, Ernst Haeckel published a book in two volumes called Generelle Morphologie der Organismen (General Morphology of Organisms) in the first volume of which he formulated his biogenetic law, famously stating that ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny. Here, we describe Haeckel's original idea as first formulated in the Generelle Morphologie der Organismen and later further developed in other publications until the present situation in which molecular data are used to test the "hourglass model," which can be seen as a modern version of the biogenetic law. We also tell the story about his discovery, while traveling in Norway, of an unknown organism, Magosphaera planula, that was important in that it helped to precipitate his ideas into what was to become the Gastraea theory.

Neurosecretory vesicles are highly specialized trafficking organelles that store neurotransmitters that are released at presynaptic nerve endings and are, therefore, important for animal cell-cell signalling. In this document we present the calculation and experimental validation of a source term for F-production with a cyclotron for medical applications operating at 18 MeV proton energy and 30 μA proton current. Annual killifishes are members of the Aplocheiloidea and live in ephemeral habitats that desiccate regularly during the dry season and refill during the rainy season. Populations of these fishes survive the dry season by producing drought-resistant diapausing eggs that are buried in the substrate. A European Union (EU) regulatory guideline came into effect for all new pharmaceutical products on June 1st, 2015, and for all existing pharmaceutical products on December 1st, 2015. This guideline centers around the use of the Acceptable Daily Exposure (ADE) [synonymous with the Permitted Daily Exposure (PDE)] and operational considerations associated with implementation are outlined here. The EU guidance states that all active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) require an ADE; however, other substances such as starting materials, process intermediates, and cleaning agents may benefit from an ADE.

The purpose of this paper is to describe the use of toxicokinetic (TK) and toxicodynamic (TD) data in setting acceptable daily exposure (ADE) values and occupational exposure limits (OELs). Use of TK data can provide a more robust exposure limit based on a rigorous evaluation of systemic internal dose. Bioavailability data assist in extrapolating across different routes of exposure to be protective for route-based differences of exposure.
