Meningococcal disease is a devastating infection caused by Neisseria meningitidis (meningococcus), and it is classified into serogroups according to its polysaccharide capsule composition. In Brazil, serogroup C is the most frequently responsible for the majority of cases, representing a serious public health challenge. In 2010, the meningococcal serogroup C conjugate vaccine was included in the calendar of the National Immunization Program.
