Odor quality may be represented as a "topographic" code of responses of receptor cells throughout the olfactory epithelium, with this code conveyed to the central nervous system by a topographic projection from the olfactory epithelium to the olfactory bulb. There is good evidence for topographic differences in odor-induced receptor cell activity in the tiger salamander but there is no evidence for a topographic epithelium-to-bulb projection in this species. In the present study 3H-leucine autoradiography was used to trace the projections of olfactory receptor neurons in the tiger salamander.

Fibrous polyps are very rarely found benign tumors of the ureter. Therapy should consist local resection of the tumor carrying part of the ureter with reestablishment of ureteral continuity. The diagnosis can be suspected from clinical signs, urography and retrograde pyelography.

Schoolboy rugby injuries are a cause for concern in medical and non-medical circles, but few scientific investigations into their nature and frequency have been undertaken. We therefore decided to carry out a prospective study of the pattern of injuries occurring during one rugby season among boys in age groups ranging from under 10 to under 19 at one school, and to relate them to age, team level, time of season, position played and phase of play. Results showed that there are well-defined physical factors and conditions of play most likely to cause injury, and suggestions are made as to how these injuries could be minimized.

In order to conduct experimental infection studies of Mansonella ozzardi in local haematophagous Diptera, volunteers infected with this parasite were identified during a microfilaria survey in four Amerindian villages in the Pakaraima Mountains of western Guyana, near the Brazilian border. M. ozzardi microfilariae were detected in thick blood smears from 8-21% of persons examined.

Measurement of cardiac output, arteriovenous oxygen difference, and oxygen uptake in patients with heart failure may be subject to technical and biologic inaccuracies. We measured these 3 variables in 16 patients with chronic heart failure at rest and during exercise. When cardiac output was measured by thermodilution and compared with values calculated by the Fick principle, there was a significant correlation at rest (r = 0.

The effects of acute and chronic oral administration of the vasodilator minoxidil on hemodynamics, oxygen consumption, exercise performance, and clinical status were investigated in 10 patients with severe, chronic heart failure refractory to digitalis and diuretic therapy. The cardiac index was 1.99 +/- 0.

Phycomycosis infections caused by the fungi Rhizopus and Mucor are commonly termed mucormycosis. Mucormycosis infections exhibit a rapidly progressive course characterized by angioinvasion and necrosis. The rhinocerebral form has been described thoroughly in the literature.

Echocardiographic features of acute aortic regurgitation resulting from bacterial endocarditis have been well documented (Nathan et al., 1980; Weaver et al., 1977; Wray, 1975a), and include thick shaggy echoes from aortic valve in diastole, fine diastolic flutter of aortic valves suggestive of rupture of cusps, and premature closure of mitral valves.

Patients with extensive surgical defects of the palate, orbit, or nose are difficult to rehabilitate. Prosthetic rehabilitation in these areas often shortens hospitalization, speeds recovery, and reduces medical expenses. Specific factors in planning treatment are directed toward successful prosthetic rehabilitation, using a team approach, careful patient selection, and specific surgical principles keyed to each facial region.

The conventional manner of preparing ambulatory patients for oral cholecystography with six tablets of iopanoic acid yields results which are essentially equal to those obtained by single-visit oral cholecystography (two-day preparation with 12 tablets of iopanoic acid). Also, it is more convenient for patients and referring physicians. The conventional method of preparation is recommended for hospitalized patients as well.

Relaxation training tapes vary in voice gender and background, but little has been published regarding the preferences and effects of these parameters. Four classes, totalling 40 male and 36 female undergraduates, listened to parts of two commercially available sets of relaxation tapes. Both sets offered progressive relaxation and autogenic training in a choice of a male or a female voice.

Transseptal transsphenoidal hypophysectomy has evolved into a low mortality/morbidity procedure in properly selected patients. Preoperative evaluation is becoming increasingly accurate with the rapid advances in computerized axial tomography. With the lowering of operative morbidity, indications for the transsphenoidal approaches to the sella are broadening.

Bilateral anodal lesions performed with stainless steel electrodes placed either in the anterior medial (AMH) or lateral (ALH) hypothalamus, or in the ventromedial nucleus (VMH), induced in unrestrained rats the rapid development of arterial hypertension, tachycardia and death. Similarly placed cathodal lesions performed with platinum electrodes failed to elicit the cardiovascular syndrome. The electrical stimulation of the AMH, ALH or VMH caused an increased in the arterial blood pressure in anesthetized rats.

A new, simple pressurizing technique using air injection into an infusion bottle, makes rapid intravenous infusion of radiopaque contrast medium possible. This method permits the use of 30% solutions in a large volume to obtain excellent venograms while eliminating the complications of pain and thrombophlebitis which often occur with more concentrated solutions.

Studied potential checking and response bias on the Depression Adjective Check Lists (DACL) by comparing the scores of 144 college students on three administration formats: True-false, forced-choice, and standard format. The DACL scores on the three formats were interrelated significantly with one another as well as with an independent measure of state depression of college students (CID). Correlations between the number of depressive adjectives checked and the depression score were significant in the true-false format, but not in the standard format.

The intensity of transmission of Wuchereria bancrofti was measured in a coastal community in north Trinidad where 15% of the residents were microfilaraemic. The only significant vector, Culex quinquefasciatus, was studied in detail to determine seasonal abundance, longevity, infection and infectivity rates. Only 2.

The purpose of this study was to assess the value of computerized axial tomography (CAT) in canine larynges that exhibit controlled surgical defects, and in 18 patients with biopsy-proved epidermoid carcinoma of the larynx who were studied prospectively. Five canine larynges with sequential surgical defects of 0 mm, 5 mm, 10 mm, and 15 mm were studied by CAT in order to evaluate our ability to identify defects in the thyroid cartilage. A 5-mm collimator with overlapping sections at 3-mm intervals and a 13-mm collimator with 5-mm overlapping sections were both used for each stage of the experiment.
