A 2023 product recall has described the risk for morbidity and mortality for children ingesting water beads. We aimed to describe water bead exposure and management trends in the United States. We used the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) to identify water bead injuries from 2013 to 2023.

Functional Dyspepsia and Tricyclic Antidepressant Use in a Naval Flight Officer.

Functional dyspepsia is a disorder of gut-brain interaction that has the potential to impact aviation performance. Proton pump inhibitors are well-tolerated but are only effective in one half of cases. Second-line treatments, including tricyclic antidepressants, are associated with drowsiness and are not routinely approved for use in aviators.

Improved Outcomes in Eosinophilic Esophagitis with Higher Medication Possession Ratio.

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) disease activity can be caused by treatment non-adherence. Medication possession ratio (MPR) is an established metric of medication adherence. A higher MPR correlates with better outcomes in several chronic diseases, but MPR has not been investigated with respect to EoE.

The Uniformed Services Constipation Action Plan: An Effective Tool for the Management of Children with Functional Constipation.

Objective: To implement and to evaluate the effectiveness of the Uniformed Services Constipation Action Plan (USCAP) in our gastroenterology clinic for children with functional constipation.

Study Design: This implementation science study included toilet-trained subjects aged 4 years and older who met the Rome IV criteria for functional constipation. Children were block randomized to receive either the USCAP or control.

Quantitative Analysis of Tug Sign: An Endoscopic Finding of Eosinophilic Esophagitis.

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic immune-mediated disorder characterized by esophageal inflammation and dysfunction, with a rising incidence affecting approximately 1:1000 individuals worldwide. Chronic inflammation can lead to tissue remodeling in the esophagus with fibrosis in the lamina propria that is partially responsible for symptoms and complications of EoE. At times, a firmness to the esophagus can be appreciated with a noticeable force required to obtain biopsies from EoE.

Development and Implementation of DIGEST: The Digital Interactive Gastroenterology Education Suite for Trainees.

Introduction: Clinical clerkship curricula should exist to provide rotating learners on subspecialty rotations with consistent exposure to specific topics geared toward the discipline of interest, such as pediatric gastroenterology (GI). We aim to describe our experience developing and implementing DIGEST: the Digital Interactive Gastroenterology Education Suite for Trainees, a novel, online GI curriculum delivered to virtual, rotating learners during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic stay-at-home order.

Materials And Methods: A general needs assessment in 2019 identified a lack of standardized educational experience amongst the rotating learners on pediatric GI service.

Fifteen-Year-Old Male with Type 2 Autoimmune Pancreatitis: An Argument for Endoscopy.

Type 2 autoimmune pancreatitis, an increasingly recognized etiology of pancreatitis in patients less than 20 years old, has characteristically been diagnosed with the histological finding of duct-centric pancreatitis in a patient who lacks elevated serum immunoglobulin G4. We present the case of a nonobese 15-year-old male, without any chronic medical conditions, who presented with the chief complaint of abdominal pain. The laboratory study results were remarkable for a lipase level of 5,419 U/L and a γ-glutamyl transferase level of 373 U/L.

Perinatal or adult Nf1 inactivation using tamoxifen-inducible PlpCre each cause neurofibroma formation.

Plexiform neurofibromas are peripheral nerve sheath tumors initiated by biallelic mutation of the NF1 tumor suppressor gene in the Schwann cell lineage. To understand whether neurofibroma formation is possible after birth, we induced Nf1 loss of function with an inducible proteolipid protein Cre allele. Perinatal loss of Nf1 resulted in the development of small plexiform neurofibromas late in life, whereas loss in adulthood caused large plexiform neurofibromas and morbidity beginning 4 months after onset of Nf1 loss.
