  • Recent literature highlights the growing use of social media in oral health education, but there's a lack of comprehensive summaries on this topic.
  • A scoping review analyzed 40 English-language studies published from 2008 to 2023, mainly focusing on undergraduate dental students and identifying YouTube as the most utilized platform for educational purposes.
  • Findings suggest that while social media can be useful in oral health education, there is a need for stronger research designs to accurately assess its impact.

  • The study aimed to investigate how orthodontists (OTs) and pediatric dentists (PDs) in Brazil screen and manage pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
  • A survey was conducted with 381 dental professionals, and 10 in-depth interviews were performed to gather insights on their practices and perceptions regarding OSA.
  • Findings revealed that many OTs and PDs had some knowledge of OSA, utilized sleep questionnaires, and often provided specific treatments, but they faced barriers and expressed a need for better resources and guidelines in managing OSA.

  • Numerous studies have investigated the effects of fluoride (F) on various systems, especially its interaction with the thyroid, but a clear consensus is still lacking.
  • This systematic review aimed to collate evidence regarding the impact of fluoride levels in drinking water on thyroid function, focusing on studies recognized by the World Health Organization.
  • Out of 3,568 studies, only seven met the criteria, with five indicating that high fluoride exposure may harm thyroid function; however, all studies had significant methodological issues leading to low confidence in the findings.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates differences in biomarker levels in the gingival crevicular fluid of premenopausal versus postmenopausal women receiving orthodontic treatment.
  • After a thorough search across multiple databases, three relevant studies were identified, focusing on levels of biomarkers such as RANKL, OPN, and IL-17A.
  • Results indicated some differences in biomarker levels between the groups, but the limited number of studies and variability in findings call for more in-depth research to validate these conclusions.

Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers analyzed 1,725 studies but found only four that met eligibility criteria, which were then assessed for bias and confounding factors.
  • * The findings indicated that adults with periodontal disease have a 1.38 times higher likelihood of having root caries compared to those without, although the certainty of this evidence is considered very low.

Article Synopsis
  • - This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the link between periodontal disease (PD) and athletic performance in professional athletes, using studies published until April 2022.
  • - After reviewing 793 references, only eight studies qualified, and while two showed no correlation between PD and athletic performance, a meta-analysis involving 396 participants indicated a significant association between PD and a self-reported drop in sports performance.
  • - The findings suggest that periodontal disease could negatively impact athletes' performance, but more research is necessary to better understand the relationship and assess other influencing factors.

  • Obesity is a significant public health issue, with food consumption decisions heavily influenced by individual taste perceptions, impacting eating behaviors and body weight.
  • The study reviewed various research articles to assess the connection between obesity and taste alterations by analyzing data from multiple electronic databases, resulting in the inclusion of 19 relevant studies.
  • Findings indicate that 40% of eligible studies showed a link between obesity and altered taste perceptions, with most studies demonstrating good methodological reliability, although some limitations exist in the research.

  • Molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is an enamel defect affecting some molars and incisors, potentially caused by systemic and environmental factors, including respiratory diseases.
  • * This study aimed to examine the relationship between MIH and respiratory diseases by reviewing literature, ultimately identifying 13 relevant articles from an initial pool of 3,666.
  • * The findings indicated that children with MIH are more likely to have respiratory diseases compared to those without MIH, but the overall evidence quality was rated as very low.

This systematic review aimed to assess whether dental caries is associated with oxidative salivary stress. The searches were carried out in electronic databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, LILACS, OpenGrey, and Google Scholar, without restrictions on the date of publication and language. The acronym PECO was used, in which the participants (P) were children and adolescents exposed (E) to dental caries compared (C) to those without dental caries, with the outcome (O) of modulation of oxidative biochemical parameters.

Introduction: Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a sleep-breathing disorder that seems likely to have long-term negative social and health consequences in children and adolescents. There are no established standard management approaches when the first line of therapy, the tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy (T&A), is not indicated or fails to address paediatric OSA (residual paediatric OSA). This protocol describes a prospective cohort study that aims to assess the effectiveness of orthodontic interventions for managing residual paediatric OSA in patients with concomitant craniofacial issues.

Neurodegenerative diseases are a group of progressive disorders that affect the central nervous system (CNS) such as Alzheimer, Parkinson, and multiple sclerosis. Inflammation plays a critical role in the onset and progression of these injuries. Periodontitis is considered an inflammatory disease caused by oral biofilms around the tooth-supporting tissues, leading to a systemic and chronic inflammatory condition.

The significant contribution of dental professionals to the management of selected adult obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) cases is understood. Among children, it has also been suggested that dental professionals may also help screen and manage this morbidity in selected cases. It has also been noted that our understanding of pediatric OSA lags significantly behind adult OSA.
