We report the draft genome of a clinical multi-resistant (24Kpn33) isolate, whose genome (5.7 Mbp) harbored 17 antibiotic resistance genes, including . Notably, this gene was mobilized within the IncP-6 pCOL-1 plasmid, the first genetic platform related to the acquisition and dissemination of the in .

Article Synopsis
  • * The genomic analysis revealed that the isolate carries a large chromosome and a plasmid, with the gene being located on the chromosome and transferred via a specific transposon within a new genomic island.
  • * This is the first documented case of an OXA-244-producing isolate in the Americas, suggesting it may have spread through a pandemic clone, indicating that more similar isolates could be present but undetected.

Article Synopsis
  • This study focuses on Pseudomonas aeruginosa Sequence Type 235 in Colombia, highlighting its ability to acquire resistance genes, particularly those related to carbapenem resistance, which poses a significant infection threat in healthcare settings.
  • In a study conducted across five ICUs, 58 P. aeruginosa isolates were collected, with nearly half showing carbapenem resistance; molecular analysis revealed specific genes associated with resistance within certain isolates.
  • The research uncovers a novel chromosomal feature involving a double insertion of Tn4401b in a new genomic island (PAGI-17), showcasing the organism's genomic adaptability and complexity in how it spreads antibiotic resistance.

Staphylococcus aureus pandemic clone USA300 has, in addition to its constitutive arginine catabolism (arc) gene cluster, an arginine catabolism mobile element (ACME) carrying another such cluster, which gives this clone advantages in colonisation and infection. Gene arcR, which encodes an oxygen-sensitive transcriptional regulator, is inside ACME and downstream of the constitutive arc gene cluster, and this situation may have an impact on its activation. Different relative expression behaviours are proven here for arcRACME and the arcACME operon compared to the constitutive ones.

Objective: To determine the molecular epidemiology and presence of virulence genes in community-acquired (CA) and hospital-acquired (HA) methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates and their relationship to clinical outcomes.

Methods: An observational and prospective study of infections caused by MRSA was conducted between June 2006 and December 2007 across seven hospitals in three Colombian cities. MRSA isolates were analyzed for SCCmec.

Article Synopsis
  • - Six strains of multiresistant Klebsiella pneumoniae, which produce the NDM-1 enzyme, were found during an outbreak affecting neonatal patients in a Colombian hospital.
  • - Molecular examination revealed that all strains contained the blaNDM-1, qnrA, and intI1 genes and shared a close genetic relationship.
  • - These strains represent a new sequence type (ST1043) never documented before, marking the first identification of NDM-1-producing bacteria in South America.
