The aim of this study was to characterise a novel family of inflammatory genes induced by pro-inflammatory cytokines in primary human endothelial cells. Using a genome-wide array screen two previously uncharacterised genes, NLF1 and NLF2 were identified that were upregulated over 30 fold by treatment with interleukin 1beta for 2 h. They were also found to respond to tumour necrosis factor alpha, suggesting a general role in inflammation.

The endothelin B receptor (ETB) is an endothelial cell receptor found in caveolae. Studies with GFP-tagged ETB have suggested that the protein is constitutively endocytosed and targeted to lysosomes where it is rapidly degraded. We report that iodinated endothelin-1 ligand (ET-1) is taken up by cells transfected with ETB and remains undegraded for at least 17 h.
