Infectious bronchitis (IB) is a highly contagious and acute viral disease of chicken caused by the infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) of the family Coronaviridae. Even with extensive vaccination against IB by the poultry industry, the occurrence of new IBV genotypes is a continuous challenge encountered by the global poultry industry. This experiment was designed to compare the pathogenicity of two IBV strains belonging to Massachusetts (Mass) and Delmarva DMV/1639 genotypes.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the role of the trachea as a potential entry point for the Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) in chickens, specifically the Canadian strain DMV/1639, by comparing different infection routes.
  • It found that the oculo-nasal/intratracheal challenged group displayed earlier clinical signs and specific gross lesions primarily in the ovary, while the oculo-nasal only group had more severe damage in multiple reproductive organs.
  • Both groups showed similar immune responses and viral shedding patterns, but the oculo-nasal group had a more extensive impact on lung and kidney tissue as well as increased B cell infiltration in the oviduct.
