Recent analyses conducted by German official food control reported detection of the aromatic amides N-(2,4-dimethylphenyl)acetamide (NDPA), N-acetoacetyl-m-xylidine (NAAX) and 3-hydroxy-2-naphthanilide (Naphthol AS) in cold water extracts from certain food contact materials made from paper or cardboard, including paper straws, paper napkins, and cupcake liners. Because aromatic amides may be cleaved to potentially genotoxic primary amines upon oral intake, these findings raise concern that transfer of NDPA, NAAX and Naphthol AS from food contact materials into food may present a risk to human health. The aim of the present work was to assess the stability of NDPA, NAAX and Naphthol AS and potential cleavage to 2,4-dimethylaniline (2,4-DMA) and aniline during simulated passage through the gastrointestinal tract using static in vitro digestion models.

Drug-drug and food-drug interactions are often due to an inhibition or induction of drug-metabolizing cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes and may result in non-response or adverse reactions. Hence, phenotypic biomarkers of CYP activity appear as useful tools for individualized pharmacotherapy. Analysis of human urine for specific compounds or metabolites is an established method for biomonitoring occupational or environmental exposures. Modern liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry is not limited to single compounds but can simultaneously analyze whole classes of urine constituents with both high sensitivity and specificity. Individual differences in the composition of urine are very large in humans, which raises a number of problems that are not encountered in animal experimentation.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a weak estrogen. Pharmacokinetic studies of BPA have demonstrated a rapid and extensive metabolism of BPA to the nonestrogenic BPA-monoglucuronide (BPA-gluc). A liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method has been developed for the direct quantitation of residues of 13 azole fungicides in wine and has been successfully applied to 103 wine samples. The method utilizing 25 transitions is highly sensitive and specific with centrifugation as the only sample work-up step. Precision was better than 14% and accuracy ranged between 80 and 120%.
