Severe visual impairment can result from retinal degenerative diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa, which lead to photoreceptor cell death. These pathologies result in extensive neural and glial remodelling, with survival of excitable retinal neurons that can be electrically stimulated to elicit visual percepts and restore a form of useful vision. The Phoenix Bionic Eye is a fully implantable visual prosthesis, designed to stimulate the retina from the suprachoroidal space.

However, the contribution of the common carotid artery (CCA) to protection of the cerebral microvasculature from high pulse pressure is not known, specifically to what extent viscoelastic energy dissipation in the arterial wall might contribute to the shock absorbing function of the large conduit arteries.
Methods: Young adult sheep (n = 6) were anaesthetised and their CCAs (n = 7) exposed.

An optical fiber-based sensor has been developed to measure the forces at the tip of an electrode array during insertion into the cochlea. The sensor, utilizing optical fiber Bragg grating technology, was incorporated into a custom-designed Pt-banded electrode array for guinea pigs. In vivo experiments were undertaken in which forces at the tip of the array were measured in real time during the insertion.
