Introduction: Physician burnout is a common problem for which self-compassion training has shown positive effects. In this program evaluation, we explore the effects of a synchronous online continuing medical education program (Self-Compassion for Healthcare Communities, SCHC) to improve physician burnout and related outcomes.
Methods: The SCHC program was delivered online via Zoom and consisted of six 1-hour weekly sessions to enhance self-compassion and well-being.
Designing diagnostic assays to genotype rapidly mutating viruses remains a challenge despite the overall improvements in nucleic acid detection technologies. RT-PCR and next-generation sequencing are unsuitable for genotyping during outbreaks or in point-of-care detection due to their infrastructure requirements and longer turnaround times. We developed a quantum dot barcode multiplexing system to genotype mutated viruses.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) can lead to complications that prolong hospital stays and result in patient discomfort as well as increased health care costs and mortality. At our academic medical center in New York City, in 2016-17, 21 of 87 CAUTI cases (24%) were in bedbound female patients in whom indwelling catheters were used for incontinence. Although condom catheters were available as an alternative to indwelling urinary catheters for male patients, there was a lack of effective products for female patients.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFPurpose: Under the American College of Surgeons' Operation Giving Back, several US institutions collaborated with a teaching and regional referral hospital in Ethiopia to develop a surgical research curriculum.
Methods: A virtual, interactive, introductory research course which utilized a web-based classroom platform and live educational sessions via an online teleconferencing application was implemented. Surgical and public health faculty from the US and Ethiopia taught webinars and led breakout coaching sessions to facilitate participants' project development.
Background: We determined the burden of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in air and on surfaces in rooms of patients hospitalized with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and investigated patient characteristics associated with SARS-CoV-2 environmental contamination.
Methods: Nasopharyngeal swabs, surface, and air samples were collected from the rooms of 78 inpatients with COVID-19 at 6 acute care hospitals in Toronto from March to May 2020. Samples were tested for SARS-CoV-2 ribonucleic acid (RNA), cultured to determine potential infectivity, and whole viral genomes were sequenced.
Patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 and influenza display similar symptoms, but treatment requirements are different. Clinicians need to accurately distinguish SARS-CoV-2 from influenza to provide appropriate treatment. Here, the authors develope a color-based technique to differentiate between patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 and influenza A using a nucleic acid enzyme-gold nanoparticle (GNP) molecular test requiring minimal equipment.

Intensive chemotherapeutic regimens have been developed in recent decades, including the lymphomes malins B (LMB) protocol, which have resulted in a survival rate in excess of 90%. Mechanistic understanding of zileuton toxicity is hampered by the rarity of the cases and lack of an animal model. A promising model for mechanistic study of rare liver injury is the Diversity Outbred (J:DO) mouse population, with genetic variation similar to that found in humans.

We examined the monocarboxylate transporter 1 inhibitor AZD3965, currently in phase I clinical studies, as a potential therapy for diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and Burkitt lymphoma. Whilst extensive monocarboxylate transporter 1 protein was found in 120 diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and 10 Burkitt lymphoma patients' tumors, monocarboxylate transporter 4 protein expression was undetectable in 73% of the diffuse large B-cell lymphoma samples and undetectable or negligible in each Burkitt lymphoma sample.

Objective: In this study, we examined the impact of routine use of a passive disinfection cap for catheter hub decontamination in hematology-oncology patients.
Setting: A tertiary care cancer center in New York City.
Methods: In this multiphase prospective study, we used 2 preintervention phases (P1 and P2) to establish surveillance and baseline rates followed by sequential introduction of disinfection caps on high-risk units (HRUs: hematologic malignancy wards, hematopoietic stem cell transplant units and intensive care units) (P3) and general oncology units (P4).
Neuroblastoma cell lines are heterogeneous, comprised of at least three distinct cell phenotypes; neuroblastic N-type cells, non-neuronal substrate-adherent S-type cells and intermediate I-type cells. N- and S-type cell populations were enriched from the parental SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cell line and induced to differentiate by the addition of retinoic acid (RA), a drug used in the treatment of neuroblastoma. N- and S-type cells were identified based on their differential expression of β-tubulin III, vimentin and Bcl-2.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFIn the study reported here, we study the nature of the metal ion complexes of EDTA as solute systems for analysis of lipoproteins by density gradient ultracentrifugation (DGU) by varying both the complexing metal ion and the counterion. Specifically, the sodium and cesium salts of complexes of Bi/EDTA, Pb/EDTA, Cd/EDTA, Fe/EDTA, and Cu/EDTA were chosen for this study. We show that useful gradients can be formed within a few hours beginning with a homogeneous solution.
