Phase-change materials (PCMs) have gained more attention during the last few decades. As the main function of these materials is to store and release energy in the form of latent heat during phase transitions, they perfectly fulfill the direction of modern research focused on energy-related topics. Although they have basic energy-related properties, recent research shows a need to upgrade those materials in terms of improving their common drawbacks like shape stability, leakage, and poor conductivity.

These multifunctional materials can store thermal energy but also, at the same time, during the phase transition, they can change colour. Thermal conductivity is also extremely important for this type of material, which is why various additives are used for this purpose.

The largest and most important group of PCMs for low-temperature applications are organic PCMs, mainly paraffins, fatty acids, fatty alcohols, and polymers. One of the major disadvantages of organic PCMs is their flammability.
