Background: Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) are chronic infectious conditions that primarily affect marginalized populations. The chemotherapeutic arsenal available for treating NTD is limited and outdated, which poses a challenge in controlling and eradicating these diseases. This is exacerbated by the pharmaceutical industry's lack of interest in funding the development of new therapeutic alternatives.

Description of new species of complex isolated from sewage at the São Paulo zoological park foundation in Brazil.

Five mycobacterial isolates from sewage were classified as members of the genus but presented inconclusive species assignments. Thus, the isolates (MYC017, MYC098, MYC101, MYC123 and MYC340) were analyzed by phenotypical, biochemical, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) and genomic features to clarify their taxonomic position. Phenotypic analysis and biochemical tests did not distinguish these isolates from other non-pigmented mycobacteria.

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of different additives in preventing urolithiasis in lambs fed a diet rich in concentrate and their impact on performance and blood and urinary parameters. Thirty-two noncastrated male lambs, crossbred Dorper × Santa Inês, with initial body weights (BWs) of 23 ± 0.1 kg and ages of 50 ± 5 days, were kept in individual pens and fed a diet composed of 6% ssp.

Safe but stifled: Assessing the impact of space and place on risk and adaptive response among shelter residents during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic dramatically changed society's interactions with spaces and places. This is especially true for shelter residents who had greater perceived risks of contracting the virus, largely because of communal living. To understand how shelter residents conceptualized their risk and resilience, we implemented a PhotoVoice project with five artists living in a Miami, FL shelter.

In this study, we investigated the influence of fungal extracellular vesicles (EVs) during biofilm formation and morphogenesis in Candida albicans. Using crystal violet staining and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), we demonstrated that C. albicans EVs inhibited biofilm formation .

Prolonged Release of Anti-Retroviral Efavirenz From System Using ZIF-8 as Carrier.

Background: Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is a major public health problem in the world. One of the highly effective drugs in anti-HIV therapy is efavirenz (EFZ), which is classified as Class II according to the Classification System of Biopharmaceuticals, presenting low solubility and high permeability, this being an obstacle related to the drug.

Objective: This study aimed to obtain an innovative system based on EFZ and the Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework (ZIF-8) to use in the development of prolonged-release pharmaceutical forms that can circumvent this problem.

A Systematic Review of the Anti-inflammatory Effects of Gallium Compounds.

Background: Inflammation is an essential response provided by the immune system, ensuring the survival during microbial infection, tissue injury and other noxious conditions. However, prolonged inflammatory processes are often associated with severe side effects on health.

Objective: This systematic review aimed to provide the evidence in the literature of the preclinical and human anti-inflammatory activity of gallium compounds from 2000 to 2019 focused on elucidating the mechanisms involved in the inflammatory process.

Diversity of Mycobacteriaceae from aquatic environment at the São Paulo Zoological Park Foundation in Brazil.

We investigated the species diversity of Mycobacteriaceae in surface water samples from six environments at the zoological park in São Paulo, Brazil. Three hundred and eighty isolates were cultivated and identified by phenotypic characteristics (growth rate and pigmentation) and sequencing of hsp65, rpoB and 16S rRNA genes. The results revealed that almost 48% of the isolates could be identified at the species level; about 50% were classified at the genus level, and only less than 2% of the isolates showed an inconclusive identification.

Psychological aspects of patients with intestinal stoma: integrative review.

Objective: to analyze evidences of psychological aspects of patients with intestinal stoma.

Method: integrative review with search of primary studies in the PsycINFO, PubMed, CINAHL and WOS databases and in the SciELO periodicals portal. Inclusion criteria were: primary studies published in a ten-year period, in Portuguese, Spanish or English, available in full length and addressing the theme of the review.

Chitosan delays ripening and ROS production in guava (Psidium guajava L.) fruit.

Guava is a typically tropical fruit highly perishable with a short shelf-life due to intense metabolic activity after harvested. In attempt to minimize the problems related to the postharvest, we evaluated the physiochemical characteristics and antioxidant system in guava fruits under chitosan coating at concentrations of 1%, 2%, and 3% stored at 25°C during 96h. The chitosan suppressed the respiratory rate, fresh weight loss, firmness and skin color with delay in the degradation of chlorophyll.

The chitosan affects severely the carbon metabolism in mango (Mangifera indica L. cv. Palmer) fruit during storage.

Mango is a highly perishable fruit with a short post-harvest time due to the intense metabolic activity after harvesting. In attempt to evaluate the effects of chitosan in mango fruits, it was treated with 0%, 1%, 2% or 3% of chitosan solutions, placed into plastic trays, and stored at room temperature. Changes in physical and chemical parameters were evaluated.

CMIRS Solvation Model for Methanol: Parametrization, Testing, and Comparison with SMD, SM8, and COSMO-RS.

The new continuum solvation model, composite method for implicit representation of solvent (CMIRS), proposed by Pomogaeva and Chipman and implemented in GAMESS was parametrized for methanol solvent, with the aim of using it for ionic reactions in solution. The model was tested for predicting single-ion solvation free energy, pK of acids and protonated bases, and the activation free-energy barriers of S2 and SAr reactions in methanol. A comparison was performed with other continuum models, such as SMD, SM8, and COSMO-RS.

Neuropsychiatric symptoms of the elderly with Alzheimer's disease and the family caregivers' distress.

Objective: to analyze the relationship between the distress of the family caregiver and the presence of neuropsychiatric symptoms in elderly patients with Alzheimer's disease or mixed dementia.

Method: a descriptive, cross-sectional study conducted in the Geriatric and Dementias Clinic of a general tertiary hospital, with 96 elderly people with Alzheimer's disease or mixed dementia and their family caregivers. Questionnaires to characterize the elderly and caregivers, and the Neuropsychiatric Inventory were used.

High-fat diet-induced hypertension and autonomic imbalance are associated with an upregulation of CART in the dorsomedial hypothalamus of mice.

We evaluated herein whether diet-induced obesity alters sympathovagal balance, blood pressure, and neuropeptides levels at the hypothalamus and brainstem of mice. Male C57BL6J mice fed with a high-fat (HFD) or a high-fat high-sucrose (HFHSu), or a regular chow diet (C) for 8 weeks were evaluated for metabolic parameters and blood pressure, the latter being performed in conscious freely moving mice. Spectral analysis from the records of systolic blood pressure (SBP) and cardiac pulse intervals (PI) was performed to analyse the autonomic balance in the cardiovascular system.

Phlebotomine sandflies in rural locations in the State of Parana, southern Brazil.

This study reports the fauna and frequency of sandflies in domestic animal shelters, residences and other ecotopes in rural areas of the municipality of Bandeirantes, Paraná State. Sandflies were collected twice in eight rural villages by using Falcon traps from 8pm to 6am in 2008. In these localities 4,790 sandflies were collected, which were represented by ten sandfly species, prevailing of Nyssomyia neivai and Nyssomyia whitmani species.

Dispersal and memory of sand flies in an endemic area of cutaneous leishmaniasis, southern Brazil.

The dispersal of and the existence of memory in sand flies were measured in a transmission area of cutaneous leishmaniasis, in the municipality of Bandeirantes, Paraná, Brazil. Sand flies were caught in a rural area, with Shannon trap installed in the forest and three Falcão traps installed in a human-inhabited environment (HIE) and three others in an impacted environment presently uninhabited by humans (EUH), from 1800 to 0600 hours. The captured sand flies were marked with yellow, blue, or red fluorescent powder, according to the environments where they were captured.
