[The preventive effect of granisetron on digestive tract symptoms induced by arterial infusion of anticancer and hypertensive agents in combination with radiotherapy--a study of forty patients with bladder cancer].

Forty patients with bladder cancer who underwent radiotherapy with angiotensin II, a hypertensor, and two cycles of arterial infusion of anticancer chemotherapies, including cisplatin 100 mg/body, were randomly assigned to a granisetron group and a non-granisetron group for comparative study of its prophylactic effect on nausea, vomiting and anorexia. Granisetron proved significantly effective in preventing nausea, as 75% of granisetron-administered patients experienced either only slight nausea or none at all, against only 22.5% in the non-granisetron group.

We compared the circadian oscillation of melatonin release from cultured pineal cells in Japanese quail, pigeon and house sparrow, to determine whether the pineal gland of these species retains the circadian oscillator function in vitro. After dissociated pineal cells have been cultured for 4 days under 12 h: 12 h light-dark (LD) cycle, they were perfused at a flow rate of 0.25 ml/h for 6-7 days under LD or constant darkness (DD).

Analysis of densitometer tracings revealed that the synthesis of other proteins was independent of the time of day or not reproducible. Maximum synthesis of the 64-kDa polypeptide occurred at around CT6 and CT21, which are almost coincident with the phase advance regions of circadian activity rhythm induced by anisomycin and light pulses [15], respectively.

Melatonin release from pineal cells of diurnal and nocturnal birds.

Melatonin release from the pineal cells of chicks, pigeons and crows (diurnal birds) in vitro was compared with that from owls (a nocturnal bird). The pineal cells of diurnal birds secreted large amounts of melatonin during the dark period, whereas owl pineal cells released virtually no melatonin over 24 h and did not respond to exogenous stimulant agents. Histological examination revealed that the owl pineal gland is very small and has a poor vascular network.

No reports have described the catabolic mechanism of substance P in vivo. We studied the effects of hepatic or renal transit on substance P, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide, and gastrin in anesthetized dogs. It was found that the liver plays a more important role in vasoactive intestinal polypeptide catabolism than the kidney and that the kidney is more important in gastrin catabolism than the liver.

Calcium antagonism by cobalt ions on contraction of guinea-pig taenia coli.

In guinea-pig taenia coli, cobalt ions (Co2+) inhibited the tonic response to a highly concentrated K+ solution (high-K+, 40 mM) more strongly than the phasic response. Co2+ displaced Ca2+ concentration-response curves to the right, inhibited the increase in tissue calcium content caused by high-K+, and inhibited Ca2+ binding at low affinity sites more than at high affinity sites. After treatment with Co2+, the tonic tension caused by high-K+ was not restored by a wash with normal medium, but it was restored by a wash with EDTA.

The spleen and vascular resin cast from doves were observed by a light and a scanning electron microscope for the purpose of studying the histological structure and the mode of the splenic blood microcirculation. The trabeculae of the dove spleen were poorly developed and the white and red pulps could not be distinguished from each other as is also the case of the chicken spleen. The luminal surface of the sinus was covered by continuous endothelial cells that had nuclear protrusion into the lumen.

We compared the effect of IP administration of rHuEPO in CAPD patients to that of intravenous (IV) administration.
