The interest in the Mediterranean diet has grown considerably due to its potential health benefits on the prevention of diverse age-related chronic diseases and its association with longevity. This dietary pattern, considered among the healthiest in the world, is not simply a combination of healthy foods but goes further in its historical and cultural roots. Mediterranean diet is not intrinsically tied to any specific religion or spiritual system, but its cultural and geographical context has influenced the dietary practices of its inhabitants, encompassing the history of Western civilization and of the three Monotheistic religions Christianity, Judaism, and Islam.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the vitamin D metabolite ratio (VMR) as a potential better indicator of vitamin D deficiency compared to 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) and 24,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (24,25(OH)D), aiming to show its stronger correlation with parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels and mortality.
  • It analyzed serum samples from 204 older adults, demonstrating that VMR had the strongest negative correlation with PTH levels and was associated with higher mortality rates in patients with low levels.
  • The results suggest that VMR could be a more reliable biomarker for assessing functional vitamin D deficiency, supporting its potential use in clinical practice.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates how the Single Point Insulin Sensitivity Estimator (SPISE) index relates to Bone Mineral Density (BMD) in a sample of 1270 Arab adults, primarily women with a mean age of about 57 years.
  • - Results show that individuals with low BMD have significantly higher SPISE values compared to those with normal BMD, indicating an inverse relationship between SPISE and BMD for the overall population and in both low and normal BMD groups.
  • - The findings suggest a potential link between BMD and insulin sensitivity, calling for further research to explore the mechanisms and implications in lifestyle modification programs aimed at improving bone and metabolic health.

Objectives: To evaluate some confounding factors that influence the concentrations of S100 calcium binding protein B (S100B), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), and ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase L-1 (UCH-L1) in older individuals. Indeed, recent guidelines have proposed the combined use of S100B and the "GFAP-UCH-L1" mTBI test to rule out mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI). As older adults are the most at risk of mTBI, it is particularly important to understand the confounding factors of those mTBI rule-out biomarkers in aging population.

Vitamin D (VD) deficiency has been associated with inflammation and dysregulation of the immune system. The NLRP3 inflammasome, a critical immune response component, plays a pivotal role in developing inflammatory diseases. VD hinders NLRP3 inflammasome activation and thus exerts anti-inflammatory effects.

Background: Dietary intake is widely known to play a crucial role in achieving peak bone mass among children and adolescents. Unfortunately, this information is lacking among Arab adolescents, an understudied demographic that has recently been observed to have a high prevalence of abnormal mineralization markers [low serum 25(OH)D, high serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP), low calcium (Ca) and/or inorganic phosphate (Pi)] suggestive of biochemical osteomalacia (OM, defined as any 2 of the 4 parameters). In order to fill this gap, we aimed to evaluate the associations of serum markers of biochemical OM with dietary intake of macronutrients, vitamins and trace minerals.
