Prevalence of Oral Lesions in COVID-19 Egyptian Patients.

Objectives: The aim of this article is to detect whether oral lesions affect the tongue mainly due to higher cells expressing angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) than in other oral sites in COVID-19 patients. Moreover, the etiology of oral lesions was evaluated either resulting from SARS-CoV-2 sequelae or from adverse effects of drugs used for COVID-19 treatment.

Materials And Methods: One hundred and twenty-four patients were admitted to the study.

Characteristics and Outcomes of a Series of COVID-Associated Mucormycosis Patients in Two Different Settings in Egypt Through the Third Pandemic Wave.

Purpose: To report on the underlying risk factors, clinical characteristics, presentation, and survival of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) associated mucormycosis (CAM) cases referred for ophthalmological consultation in two different Egyptian settings during the third viral pandemic wave (April to August of 2021).

Methods: A multicentric, retrospective analysis involving one public and two private hospitals in metropolitan Cairo, and two university hospitals in upper Egypt (Aswan and Assuit). Cases that fulfilled the diagnostic criteria of mucormycosis, with a prior or concurrent COVID-19 infection, were included.

In the past decade, mesocosms have emerged as a useful tool for the environmental study of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) as they can mimic the relevant exposure scenario of contamination. Herein, we analyzed the scientific outcomes of aquatic mesocosm experiments, with regard to their designs, the ENMs tested, and the end points investigated. Several mesocosm designs were consistently applied in the past decade to virtually mimic various contamination scenarios with regard to ecosystem setting as well as ENMs class, dose, and dosing.

Cannabis and Its Potential Protective Role Against Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Scoping Review.

Globally, around 15%-40% of patients suffering from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) use Cannabis for pain reduction, increased appetite, and reduced need for other medications. Although many patients report having benefited by using Cannabis in IBD, there is still a lack of consensus regarding the use of Cannabis in IBD. The aim is to identify, explore and map literature on the potential protective role of Cannabis against IBD through this scoping review.

Effect of smear layer removal agents on the microhardness and roughness of radicular dentin.

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of phytic acid (IP6) on the surface roughness and microhardness of human root canal dentin and compare it to other smear layer removal agents.

Materials And Methods: Fifty extracted human maxillary incisors were sectioned longitudinally into a total of 100 specimens followed by embedding in auto-polymerizing acrylic resin. The specimens were polished and then randomly divided into five groups (n = 20) according to the test solution used to condition root canal dentin: 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA); 10% citric acid (CA); 1% IP6; 37% phosphoric acid (PA); or distilled water (control group).

Characterization of the Oral Microbiome Among Children With Type 1 Diabetes Compared With Healthy Children.

Current microbiome profiling of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) patients is mostly limited to gut microbiome. We characterized the oral microbiome associated with T1D in children after the onset of the disease and explored its relationship with oral physiological factors and dental status. This cohort study comprised 37 children aged 5-15 years with T1D and 29 healthy children matched in age and gender.

Antimicrobial Activity of Phytic Acid: An Emerging Agent in Endodontics.

Background: Phytic acid (IP6) is a promising and emerging agent, and because of its unique structure and distinctive properties, it lends itself to several applications in dentistry. Splenic rupture after sexual intercourse in a pregnant woman: an extremely rare case.

We show here that the transcription factor Npas4 is an important regulator of medium spiny neuron spine density and electrophysiological parameters and that it determines the magnitude of cocaine-induced hyperlocomotion in mice. Npas4 is induced by synaptic stimuli that cause calcium influx, but not dopaminergic or PKA-stimulating input, in mouse medium spiny neurons and human iPSC-derived forebrain organoids. This induction is independent of ubiquitous kinase pathways such as PKA and MAPK cascades, and instead depends on calcineurin and nuclear calcium signalling.

Localized Pulmonary Nocardia farcinica Infection As the Presenting Symptom of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome.

Nocardiosis is an opportunistic infection that most commonly affects immunocompromised patients, with clinical presentations ranging from localized to disseminated disease. In the United States, the reported incidence is approximately 500 to 1,000 cases per year, with an observed male-to-female predominance of 3:1. We present the case of a 37-year-old male with a past medical history of malaria who presented with watery, non-bloody diarrhea for four days associated with a fever for two weeks.

ABO incompatibility in renal transplantation.

ABO blood group incompatibility (ABO-I) was historically considered an absolute contraindication to kidney transplantation due to the significant risk of acute antibody-mediated rejection and early graft loss. Nevertheless, the urge to minimize the gap between the candidates' number on the waitlist for kidney transplants and the available kidney donors encourage investigation into finding ways to use organs from ABO-I kidney donors, especially in the era of using more potent immunosuppression therapies. This review aims to discuss a general overview of ABO-I kidney transplantation and the different protocols adopted by some transplant centers to meaningfully overcome this barrier.

Focused Ultrasound Thalamotomy in Tremor Dominant Parkinson's Disease: Long-Term Results.

The complex reward structure of the social world and the uncertainty endemic to social contexts poses a challenge for modeling.
