Financial insecurity and mental well-being: experiences of parents amid the lebanese economic crisis.

Background: This study investigates the impact of financial insecurity on the mental well-being and stress levels of parents in Lebanon amid the country's severe economic crisis. The context of Lebanon's economic collapse, coupled with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Beirut port explosion, has exacerbated financial and psychological distress among the population. This research aims to understand the correlation between financial instability and parental stress, identifying key factors contributing to mental health challenges in this demographic.

Surprised by Co-Creation; Building Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in the Physiology curriculum with Undergraduate Students.

As public-facing global institutions, modern universities are subject to equality legislation (locally the United Kingdom Equality Act) and the need to represent an increasingly diverse student body. For effective education, this broad cohort needs to see itself represented, both in the curriculum, and in the very structures of the university. It is with this in mind that staff in the Centre for Biomedical Sciences Education in Queen's University Belfast recruited three students from diverse backgrounds to co-design aspects of the Undergraduate Physiology Curriculum for Medicine and Health and Life Sciences (MHLS) degrees.

GC/MS and LC-ESI-MS Analysis of Conocarpus erectus Leaves Extract via Regulating Amyloid-β-Peptide, Tau Protein, Neurotransmitters, Inflammation and Oxidative Stress against AlCl-Induced Alzheimer's Disease in Rats.

This study investigated the therapeutic effect of Conocarpus erectus leaves methanolic extract against AlCl -induced Alzheimer's disease (AD) in rats comparing with Donepezil-hydrochloride as a reference drug. The bioactive compounds of C. erectus leaves were isolated and identified by GC/MS and LC-ESI-MS analysis.

Smoking and cluster headache presentation and responsiveness to treatment.

Background: Though an association between cluster headache (CH) and smoking has been postulated, data from the Middle East region is scarce.

Aim Of Work: To study the relationship between smoking and CH clinical characteristics and responsiveness to therapy in Egypt.

Methodology: This was a prospective cohort hospital-based study conducted on patients with episodic and chronic CH in a tertiary headache clinic in Egypt during the period between 2019 and 2023.

Transcranial Doppler With Microbubbles: Screening Test to Detect and Grade Right-to-Left Shunt After an Ischemic Stroke: A Literature Review.

Right-to-left shunt, mainly due to patent foramen ovale (PFO), is likely responsible for ≈5% of all ischemic strokes and 10% of those occurring in young and middle-aged adults. Randomized clinical trials demonstrated that, in selected young and middle-aged patients with otherwise cryptogenic acute ischemic stroke and high-risk PFO, percutaneous PFO closure is more effective than antiplatelet therapy alone in preventing recurrence. However, PFO is generally a benign finding and is present in about one-quarter of the population.

Femoral Lengthening in Children with Congenital Femoral Deficiency: A Systematic Review.

Background: Congenital femoral deficiency (CFD) presents a significant challenge in pediatric orthopaedics, characterized by a spectrum of congenital anomalies ranging from mild femoral shortening to complete absence of the proximal femur and hip joint. This review aims at reviewing the latest concepts of femoral limb lengthening modalities in treating CFD, to explore the efficacy, complications, and long-term outcomes of various surgical techniques.

Methods: A comprehensive search of the literature was performed for clinical studies involving lengthening in patients with proximal focal femoral deficiency (PFFD) in several databases.

Neurovascular coupling methods in healthy individuals using transcranial doppler ultrasonography: A systematic review and consensus agreement.

Neurovascular coupling (NVC) is the perturbation of cerebral blood flow (CBF) to meet varying metabolic demands induced by various levels of neural activity. NVC may be assessed by Transcranial Doppler ultrasonography (TCD), using task activation protocols, but with significant methodological heterogeneity between studies, hindering cross-study comparisons. Therefore, this review aimed to summarise and compare available methods for TCD-based healthy NVC assessments.

Analysis of phase shift between pulse oscillations of macro- and microvascular cerebral blood flow in patients with traumatic brain injury.

Purpose: After a traumatic brain injury (TBI), monitoring of both macrovascular and microvascular blood circulation can potentially yield a better understanding of pathophysiology of potential secondary brain lesions. We investigated the changes in phase shift (PS) between cardiac-induced oscillations of cerebral blood flow (CBF) measured at macro (ultrasound Doppler) and microvascular (laser Doppler) level. Further we assessed the impact of intracranial pressure (ICP) on PS in TBI patients.

Adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein (A-FABP; FABP4) plays a significant role in the pathogenesis and progression of metabolically driven low-grade inflammation and organ damage. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of circulating FABP4 as a predictive and diagnostic biomarker for thalassemia-associated cardiometabolic events. This case-control study enrolled 50 adults with β-thalassemia and 30 age-, sex-, and body mass index-matched controls.

GC/MS Analysis and Compounds Isolation of Lycium shawii Petroleum Ether Seeds Extract for Regulating Nrf2/OH-1 Pathway, Oxidative Stress and Inflammation in Acrylamide- Induced Infertility in Female Rats.

Acrylamide is formed during heating of starchy foods at high temperature and induces reproductive toxicity. Our study is designed to evaluate the chemical constitution and anti-infertility effect of Lycium shawii seeds extract on female rats. Nutritional profile was estimated, and major active compounds were isolated and identified.

The impact of financial stress on student wellbeing in Lebanese higher education.

Background: The financial crisis has indirectly affected Lebanese university students, leading to economic distress. Accordingly, this study aimed to assess the substantial negative impact of financial stress on the mental health and well-being of Lebanese college students.

Methods: A quantitative research approach was applied and took place from June 13th to July 25th, 2023, targeting 1272 university students aged 17 and above from private and public universities across Lebanon through convenience sampling.

Characterising plasmacytoid and myeloid AXL+ SIGLEC-6+ dendritic cell functions and their interactions with HIV.

AXL+ Siglec-6+ dendritic cells (ASDC) are novel myeloid DCs which can be subdivided into CD11c+ and CD123+ expressing subsets. We showed for the first time that these two ASDC subsets are present in inflamed human anogenital tissues where HIV transmission occurs. Their presence in inflamed tissues was supported by single cell RNA analysis of public databases of such tissues including psoriasis diseased skin and colorectal cancer.

Herpes simplex virus spreads rapidly in human foreskin, partly driven by chemokine-induced redistribution of Nectin-1 on keratinocytes.

HSV infects keratinocytes in the epidermis of skin via nectin-1. We established a human foreskin explant infection model to investigate HSV entry and spread. HSV1 entry could only be achieved by the topical application of virus via high density microarray projections (HD-MAPs) to the epidermis, which penetrated beyond one third of its thickness, simulating in vivo microtrauma.

Identification, Characterization, and Ranking of Candidate Metrics for Selection to Anesthesiology Residency: An Iterative Survey of Program Directors.

Background: The primary aim of this study was to identify and stratify candidate metrics used by anesthesiology residency program directors (PDs) to develop their residency rank lists through the National Resident Matching Program.

Methods: Sixteen PDs comprised the participants, selected for diversity in geography and program size. We used a 3-round iterative survey to identify and stratify candidate metrics.

This study examined the protective effects of a Petroselinum crispum (P. crispum) methanolic extract on reproductive dysfunction induced by acrylamide in male rats. A total of 40 rats were divided into four groups (n=10).

Epithelial dendritic cells vs. Langerhans cells: Implications for mucosal vaccines.

Next-generation vaccines may be delivered via the skin and mucosa. The stratified squamous epithelium (SSE) represents the outermost layer of the skin (epidermis) and type II mucosa (epithelium). Langerhans cells (LCs) have been considered the sole antigen-presenting cells (APCs) to inhabit the SSE; however, it is now clear that dendritic cells (DCs) are also present.

Individual Patient Data Meta-Analysis of Dynamic Cerebral Autoregulation and Functional Outcome After Ischemic Stroke.

Background: The relationship between dynamic cerebral autoregulation (dCA) and functional outcome after acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is unclear. Previous studies are limited by small sample sizes and heterogeneity.

Methods: We performed a 1-stage individual patient data meta-analysis to investigate associations between dCA and functional outcome after AIS.

Long-term clinical and ultrasound follow-up after transient perivascular inflammation of the carotid artery (TIPIC) syndrome: a multicenter study.

Background: The present study aimed to describe the clinical and ultrasound (US) long-term follow-up of patients with transient perivascular inflammation of the carotid artery (TIPIC) syndrome and the risk of recurrence.

Methods: We enrolled patients with a definitive diagnosis of TIPIC syndrome who were included in a retrospective multicenter study. These patients were recontacted at least six months after the first TIPIC episode for a clinical and imaging follow-up.

Predictive value of cerebrovascular time constant for delayed cerebral ischemia after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Time constant of the cerebral arterial bed (τ) is a transcranial Doppler (TCD) based metric that is expected to quantify the transit time of red blood cells from the insonation point to the arteriole-capillary boundary during a cardiac cycle. This study aims to assess the potential of τ as an early predictor of delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI). Consecutive patients (56 ± 15 years) treated for aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage were included in the study.

Neuro-ophthalmological changes in healthy females exposed to a 5-day dry immersion: a pilot study.

After exposure to microgravity, astronauts undergo microgravity-induced thoraco-cephalic fluid shift, which may lead to ocular changes called "spaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome" (SANS). The onset of SANS may be multifactorial, including a potential elevation in intracranial pressure. Moreover, little is known about the impact of spaceflight on SANS in women due to the fact that fewer female astronauts have spent time in long-term missions.

Cerebrovascular and cardiovascular autonomic regulation in sickle cell patients with white matter lesions.

Background And Purpose: White matter lesions (WMLs) are frequent in sickle cell disease (SCD), with a prevalence described to be as high as 53% by age 30. Cerebrovascular regulation and cardiovascular autonomic regulation, more specifically the sympatho-vagal balance, can be altered in SCD. In this study the association between WMLs, cerebrovascular regulation and sympatho-vagal balance was assessed in SCD patients.
