Background: Alcohol withdrawal syndrome, if untreated, can lead to potentially life-threatening complications. Benzodiazepines are the drugs of choice for the treatment of alcohol withdrawal syndrome. We aimed to compare the symptoms-triggered approach and fixed-dose approach of benzodiazepine administration for treatment of alcohol withdrawal syndrome in regard to the health care utilization measured by the total dose of benzodiazepines, length of hospital stays, and 90-day readmissions rate.

Article Synopsis
  • Alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) is a severe medical condition with increasing rates of morbidity and mortality, and little data is available on its prevalence in Oman.
  • The study reviewed medical records of 150 male patients diagnosed with AWS, finding high readmission rates (32.7%) and low referral to rehabilitation (16.7%) despite common comorbidities like chronic liver disease and diabetes.
  • The findings indicate that AWS significantly burdens healthcare services, suggesting the need for dedicated drug and alcohol support services to improve patient care.

Vitamin K antagonists (VKA) targeting an international normalized ratio (INR) from 2 to 3 are the only approved treatments by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
